Just a bit of fun..

What would you have been up to at this time, all those years ago, in the Grove?  In my initial years of going down, I reckon I'd be headbanging away at this time (1st slowie hadnt started yet) but in my later years of going I reckon I'd still be finishing up in the Neptune before getting the last bus down around 11.30pm...how about you?

Oh I was perhaps looking at someone I fancied!  going "I wish he'd ask me up!!! I just loved the feeling of the grove walking around taking a look and feeling all grown up... We would have come from the Flowing Tide earlier... few drinks on hand and waiting for the love of your life to ask you up.... hated when the night ended.

10.30 ? Jaze Mel, I can just about remember what I was at at 10.30 last night (trying to sleep btw - old age and all that ) let alone twenty years ago!

However, that as you say would have been before the last bus crew. We'd have probably met up with a few lads in the park, even though we didn't drink, but would get in the mood and get a sober "buzz" going

We'd be in the Grove by 10.30 though. The alcove wouldn't be that packed, so I'd probably be sitting cross legged on the floor (we've had this conversation before, but the thought of sitting cross legged for more than two minutes these days ) having a natter with one of the lads.

That's my abiding memory - feeling part of a group and a never ending source of fun conversation. Unless somone was completely incapable of talking due to drink. In that case, we used put them on the floor, shout "Mosh" and then jump on them.

Fun times......

good one Mel!

in our latter Grove days, although we didn't go to the pubs, a regular meet up was having a few bottles (no cans back then!) of harp or stag in a mates house, listening to LPs and discussing every subject under the sun, then head to the Grove around 10.

Often on route we'd sing an entire side of a Floyd, Bowie or Genesis album.

Loved the blast of the music and the heat when going into the hall, and the fast and slow sets right up to a rockin finale like Bullfrog Blues.

Interesting Question. From my era, there used to be what was called the 'Metal hour' from 9-10pm. Cecil would allow records to be played before taking over himself about 10.00 pm. As has been commented on before, Cecil new how to work the crowd, so 10-10.30 pm would have been a warm up - fast songs, but not necessarily moshing material. Like Whipper, I enjoy(ed) a good mosh and personally preferred hard rock, goth and metal. So by 10.30 pm I would be probably looking forward to a mosh, in good spirits after a few cans and perhaps chatting to mates before the heavier stuff got played.

This thread has reminded me of Cure song, called '10.15, Saturday Night'. I always think of the Grove when I hear it, although I do not recall Cecil ever playing it. The Theme is not a happy one (about getting stood up). Thankfully 10.15 Saturday night holds better memories for all here.

Reckon I'd usually have been on the dance floor with my friends sizing up the talent. Much too early to slip off to the compound!

Just about arriving - it wasn't deemed 'cool' to leave home before at least 10pm

In the days of the 'Old Grove' ('72-'75) we'd arrive on our motorbikes about this time or maybe a little later.

We'd have had a few in The Beachcomber or The Barony on a Sunday, before hand.

Cecil always had an album on first and Quo's 'Hello' was a particular favourite at the time because it got you rockin' from the start.

What a place and time

Spot on Dayo

Three pints of Bass and I was anybody's. 44A outside the door ( of Coles ) and straight to Mt Prospect.

In the door and straight to The Jacks, out of The Jacks and straight to the cloakroom., ( had to get rid of the coat or they might have another look at you he he he ) then to the left hand side of the stage to see who had got in and who hadn't.

That's the one Dayo.

We used go there on a Sunday at 7pm and leave at 10pm. Closing time on Sundays in those days was 10pm.

Great spot The Barony.

There were some songs that Cecil used to play that I didnt like (to dance to, anyway) all that much - "Modern Love" by Bowie springs to mind and that was one of those 10PMish songs...I loved the Grove but sometimes a song came on that me and my mates would just go 'Meh' to and we'd check out the compound or go and get a coke or a choc bar!  Really enjoyed the Grove but was a pain when a song you disliked came on (started a thread about this some time back).

yeah, there was always a few songs l didnt like, but there was always people that liked the songs l didnt like and vice versa, but as the saying goes,"you cant please everyone all the time"
but it was an excuse to go outside,or goto the loo when you heard a song you didnt like...
at least Cecil never played'l would walk 500 miles'by the Proclaimers,it must be the worst song ever recorded,l could do time for that'song'

The one to send me scurrying off the dance floor was usually "Run to you" by Bryan Adams. Way too mainstream for a self-respecting goth to be seen dancing to!

Jen,

Understand where you are coming from with Bryan Adams. The weird thing is, Cecil could play a song like that and get away with it - it took on a Grove feel. The same is true of the Whole of the Moon - it was (still is) very commercial, yet I'll bet most people here associate it with St. Pauls. I

Was listening to a CD Cecil gave me of a radio interview with Andy Colbert on 28 Mar 05.

One of the questions that was asked was 'did Cecil play the national anthem at the end of the night?'.

No he didn't. I remember 'Whiskey In The Jar' and 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' were 2 tracks that he played regularly at the last song.
May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.
