Can you remember your very last night at the grove and how you spent it.

For me I was an aging 19 year old, working, and with a few bob in my pocket.I hadn't been there for a while.. I was into Saints Disco at the time.

So on a Sunday night I decided to check it out and see what was happening.I recognised only a few people and was getting the same looks as the ones I gave when somebody old would arrive.

I stayed in  the corridoor supping a coke and while listening to the music and young Girl came over to me and in her flat Dublin accent asked"  Hey MISTER wher's da cloakroom pleass

well that was my farwell to the Grove or was it a  farewell from the Grove

I think mine was when a girl I fancied big time started going to the "Wicket " or Clontarf cricket / Rugby club.

There was a live band "The four keys" who did all the Bread stuff etc.

So that was it I'm afraid. Got off with her, started going to the wicket and suddenly The Grove was left behind.

Went back a few times later I think but me head was in The Wicket.

I was also playing in bands then Dr Fox, Harvest Research etc and was palying at the weekends so didn't go anywhere

I recall my last night we had done our leaving and said we would all meet up during august in town we went to the high tide or was it the flowing tide....laughs

We got talking about the Grove and had anyone been down since we left school none of us had...so for the laugh we decided we'ld hop on the bus and go to the Grove

Shakes my head, we walked in looked around at all the young ppl...We were old we had left school...giggles it just didnt feel the same..music same headbanging same but the *kiddies* we couldnt handle..lol

Anyway we danced all night had a laugh but sadly that was my last night in the Grove but it was spent with old school pals so that was a bonus

Now we have our *Reunions* to look forward to....

WHENS THE NEXT ONE..?????

Nice story Joey.

Laughing here thinking about what would happen if Cecil was still going strong in St.Paul's.

We'd all be pitching up to collect the kids every night...............................except it would be at about 10 Bells and we'd end up doing exactly the same as yourself and the missus.

Like Gary I moved onto the Cricket! Loved it there. Only went to the grove a few times during that time but full of a younger crew so moved on and up to the clubs and pubs.

If I had of known my last time at the Grove was going to be my last time,I would have made a lot more of an effort to take more of it in.

As far as I remember I was supposed to meet Tony in the Nep and after he didn't show I headed down. He wasn't there either (turns out he 'met' someone somewhere else so I left him to her) and so due to lack of others I knew I stayed for a while then headed off in search of a party-AND NEVER WENT BACK!

Wish to God I had of known...

After our leaving, a few of us decided to go back for one last night out. Me and two mates, one of whom would be well known to various people on here and was a year behind us in school. Turns out he continued going for about another five years, but it was supposed to be a big last hurrah.

I had only ever gone drinking once before the Grove before, but now that I was 18 I felt that I should have a drink or two so the few cans were purchased, a football pitch was found and we sat down and imbibed.

Hit the Grove, had a great night and went home. It felt like a rite of passage.

Later tried the Cricket a few times - never liked it. Only other discos I've ever liked apart from Grove were country discos and Tamangos (and that purely because the football team would gather and have beers and chat)

June 1989

I heard from time to time of the tribute nights in Isaac Butt but just never felt the tug to go back. Then there was this gap until 2005 when I saw this notice in a chipper near the Bull Wall and a further gap until I hit a reunion in 2006

Last Grove - there ain't no such thing baby
I'm searching for that cash I should have saved for the crash

Yiz are both very funny.

To be honest, I cant remember my last night at the Grove.  I think I mentioned this on another thread at some stage but I couldnt drag myself away from the Grove at all - I had friends (and then younger brothers or sisters of friends, some of whom played Dungeons and Dragons with me) who went down and since I enjoyed the 'craic' and especially the music, why not I thought?  It became more and more obvious though that an age gap was developing between me and the 'average' Grover  and I became somewhat self-conscious about it (I think I would spend most of the evening just sitting on the table beside Cecil and his record boxes, flicking through them, and chatting with Cecil).  Eventually though, even I had to admit that I was too old for the place and just went off to the pub on a Saturday night instead.  Missed the place all these years though (hence the continuing 'Grove singles' collection) and was thrilled to discover the existence of the reunions and this website!!

Edit: Wouldnt change a day of it though.

It was sh*te Sorry I ever went. Used to get completely pissed in the Beachcomber, before ridin my hog to that kip to hear The Four Keys playin muck.

My mates decided they had enough of the Grove on Sat nights, partly because we had exhausted the female stock and needed to see new faces

But never missed a Sunday at the Grove. Best night
May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

I only went to St Pauls once. We were to meet some mates there and that was the last time at the Grove. I could never take to St Pauls, ( me kids did though ) We had moved on into town to Tiffaneys and to Zero's and now and again Sloopy's, Oh and Lord Johns. I can't remember what year that was but it was'nt today or yesterday.

Ah when I went to the cricket it was all the grove crowd that went and honest it just felt like something that you continued onto.  I loved all the dances like Joeys, the blind, any of the dances in the rugby clubs around.  Sure then it was midnight at the olympia and the waterfront and such.  Never really liked Tamangoes and Saints although we went...  Loved the waterfront though!
