Hi All,
We'd just like to get your opinions on something. There's been alot of people asking when the Grove Tributes returning to The Isaac Butt. Well, I'm happy to announce that The Isaac Butt is a hair away from being finished. So I can announce that the Tribute Night in some form or another will back on Saturday October 1st and the first Saturday of every month from then onwards... The Grove Reunion (which are the Grove nights with special guest DJ Cecil) will still be run in the Shieling on October 30th and then the final reunion will happen somewhere around the week after Christmas. Now, this brings me to my point. As much as we all love the Grove, we don't want to overkill on the whole matter. So it's been suggested that the Tribute Nights (the nights without Cecil) in Isaac Butt should still play all the Grove music, slow sets too, but also start introducing contemporary music, songs from '97 forward. Too keep it fresh. So technically, the Grove as if it never stopped. What do you think? We'd love to hear your thoughts... Edited by crusty |

yip that's a good idea idol. only way to keep something alive is w. new blood. there's been a plethora of bands & tunes all suitable for the grove since '97 but after the place closed. if things were different back then & it had never stopped but continued to this day in it's original format i'm sure cecil would be adding the occasional new song every few weeks. & that's another thing, the playlist shouldn't HAVE to inc. the exact same tunes each week reshuffled... just my 5 cents. meeting steve harris in temple bar - idol! you not ask him to go for a pint? his shout of course. did he ask you for your autograph? lol...

I'm sure Cecil didn't stop appreciating music after the Grove closed.He'd educated us all in good music up 'till then so why not ask him to select some of his favourites that have emerged in recent times that he WOULD have played if the Grove was open? just a suggestion but I know that I for one would trust his taste!!! Crusty, RE Issac Butts, thats a sensible idea, there's a lot of post Grove music out there that is Groveable IMO. Maybe I'm missing something but why is the reunion in the Shieling after Christmas the last one? There's the interest there to keep them going once or twice a year without it being overkill? What does anyone think? |

Well, we'll see. I really enjoy them myself, I just thought people would get
tired of the same thing again and again. But it seems that I was wrong. I'll have to ask Cecil tomorrow what his feeling is on the whole thing, cos getting him down was only meant to be a once off kinda thing, and he been great for doing the last three and he's doing the Hallowe'en Special but I don't know how many more he'd do. You can't have a reunion without Cecil, that's why I'm keen to make the distinction between the Reunions at The Shieling Hotel and the Tributes @ The Isaac Butt (or Radio City as the new venue's called). The monthly tribute's at Isaac's are where we started the whole revival and there's been a huge demand to bring it back, so that's why we've started them again. Also we're not relying on Cecil to be there. And on the subject of tampering with the formula as such (i.e. introducing new songs to the Tribute Nights) we've also received some negative feedback, so we're not making any decisions on that just yet. Hi Crusty, Thanks for the reply, I don't know how others feel and it would be great to get some more feedback on this. I am delighted that Cecil has made it to the reunions, and his presence certainly adds to the atmosphere and nostalgia on the night. However, if it is a choice between no more reunions or an annual one with no Cecil I'd go for the latter. I know the Tribute nights will be going in Radio City and thats great but I for one liked the fact that the Shieling is in Raheny, and the function room has a touch of the old school hall about it. Also I suspect that the Shieling venue will hold more people? I wouldn't not go to a reunion because Cecil couldn't make it, having said that its great when he does. I think that the Grove is unique among school discos in the interest and affection people have for it and the agreement of RTE to doing a documentary on it is testamony to that (and to your hard work), and that the reunions have a part to play in this too. |

Thanks Xgrovehead, your opinions (and that of everyone who posts on this
site) are much appreciated. Afterall, I can only speak for myself and my experiences when it comes to The Grove. It meant the world to me back when I was in secondary school and it has remained with me since. My life is music and I know that without a doubt that the Grove had a huge part to play in the direction that my tastes took. And I know I'm not alone there. I'm just scared that it's all gonna fall flat on it's arse the day Cecil doesn't turn up, as someone once said, "it's better to burn out than to fade away". I'm no Cecil and I've never claimed to be. I'm not trying to fill anyone's shoes here, I'm just trying to pay tribute to something special, something that played a huge part in our lives. Nothing more. I hope that the tributes, the reunions and this website has served some purpose and that it's brought a little extra to the day-to-day routine of our lives. Here's to the next one! Edited by crusty |

Hi. Once the music of old isn't slowly but surely weaned out of the playlist then I can't imagine there would be a problem playing newer music that would probably have been played if The Grove will still being played by Cecil. IMO only play a few newer tunes each month and not a half n half set list. Many of the bands whose music is played at the Grove reunions are no longer in operation or haven't released new music in a while so please please please don't cut these to promote music that can be heard on the radio at any time day or night. What I love about The Grove is that the music that is never heard on radio is played and it really reignites the vibe of our youth. How often do we get to pretend we're teenagers again? |

Don't worry Jenimcc, that'll never happen. They don't write tunes like they
used to, and there's no replacing them. Two or three new songs a night was what we had in mind. But no matter what, the old tunes rule the roost!!!

Yeah, damn right! It starts at 7.30pm on the bank holiday Sunday, October
30th at The Sheiling Hotel, with special guest DJ Cecil Nolan. Being Hallowe'en and all, we're encouraging fancy dress, "Come As You Were" (dress as you used to back at the original Grove). The event's being shot for the documentary that's being made about The Grove. This will be the greatest night in the history of post Grove related activities!!!

Crusty, I like the news stand bit that gives it a nice local touch. I was walking by there on Friday morning after two fillings in the dentist, side of face paralysed, talking out of one side of my mouth, and who did I see talking to Austin, but Cecil!!! It reminded me of the time when I was about 16 and I saw him in Roches stores coming up the escalator and I was amazed that he had a life outside the hall in St Pauls.............. I would've said hi on Friday (not that he'd know me!) but I thought I'd be a bit scary with the state I was in. Does anyone know if you can still get skin tight black jeans anywhere in Dublin and do they do them in mammy sizes?? |

Gosh I only wish I lived back in Ireland... reading all of this has brought back many memories - I have search my mind thinking back of old songs for you to play at your big upcoming night. Drink a few for me will ya! I hope you continue to do these social events - maybe some day I'll be lucky enough to be home for one. I try to relay my Grove stories to some of my American friends! it's just not the same as going out here and speaking with people who know exactly what I mean about the place. - Crusty keep playing the old stuff - music has never been the same since.

I went to the grove twice in my youth :( was fun both times ( Youth being about 90-92 ) a young 15-17 years old ahh.... Strange thing is alot of my friends now days went to the grove early to mid 80's! pity they are all married and such these days with massive balls and chains to stop them going out and getting plastered. Hopefully will be able to convince some of them to go as we are all in Clontarf castle for the weekend and its only up the road :)

Yep! couldn't agree more with Yauch & XGroovehead-its not as if we're floggin' a dead horse here! it has the ability to be "a social club" why not meet a few times a year it may be the only oppertunity that us "oldies" get to live our misspent youth!!
