Well, we have had worst memory of the Grove topic, but how about the best memory people have? I know we all loved the place, but was there one night that stood out in the memory when you think back?

I remember being on the stage around 1am and a girl I knew (and fancied) was standing beside Cecil. As the lights came up, I asked her if she wanted to be walked home and I was dead chuffed that she wanted a walk home to Beaumont! Long walk though! |

I think it would probably be the first reunion I went to. It lived up to all my expectations and more. too often when you "go back", everything seems less glamorous, smaller, but I moshed, headbanged, sang, danced, sweated my little head off. I recognised half the hall, even if some only vaguely. As I've said here before, my dad commented that I looked twenty years younger coming in the door that night. Kids and hassle have aged me (thanks for letting me know Dad As for my earlier Grove days? I'll have a little think on that one and try to come up with a specific incident. |

Will never forget my first time asking someone to dance-it was New Years Eve 1985-I was just a pup. Really nervous. And the obligatory kiss which followed-it was during Hazel O'conor or Dan Hill. Wow was I buzzed afterwards. That was a high.New Year's Eve's were always great in the Grove-and if you were single it seemed very important to have someone you could kiss at midnight. And some years I did! |

Think I said this before but my best memory was meeting H.D.....all those years ago on a Sat night in July 1982
![]() My other best memories are just hanging out with all our friends in our little spot on the floor. Because we didn't come from the local area, we never got to see anyone of our friends from one week to another ( and remember no mobile phones in those days to text during the week ) so we couldn't wait for Saturday nights to arrive and get all the news ( who broke up with who during the week etc....) Great memories that still make me smile today ![]() |

Rock on Taylor C'mon Irene Put this up before but once again the night I scored with 1265. I had just been blown out and went looking for my mate who was consoling 1265 who had just got blown out also. ( My mate was going out with Maura, Lorraine's mate ) I sat there giving out hell about all women and Lorraine giving out hell all men. Walked her home and now after 36 years were going to reunions. ( A wee bit of history ) |

Ah yes I have a special memory of someone I will not mention but I had butterflies the lot in my tummy and mad about him. I still look back at that time in my life and smile. We only went out for a while but it was great all the same to discover the first feelings of puppy love....

My best memory of the Grove was the night it opened in St. Pauls. We thought it was gone forever after the fire and I was very dubious if St. Paul's would have the same vibe - But it did and we had somewhere to go out to - to get all dolled up, dosed up to the eyeballs in Pachouli oil and freak out. No other disco (hate that word) had the wonderful mix of hippies, punks, normal people and everything else in between. We all got along ( most of the time) and the best music anywhere ever - THANKS CECIL. And now #~ years on we have this forum - Wonderful - all of it.

I posted this on another thread some time back (cant remember which one though) but one of my abiding memories of the Grove (even if it didnt actually happen IN the Grove) was walking down St Annes Park one summer afteroon and I heard someone (down near the pitch and putt course) playing "Nights in White Satin" somewhere down near the end of the park...I always loved that song and it was one of the slow songs I particularly associated with the Grove. Great to slow-dance to. It just sounded really haunting and beautiful, hearing the instrumental bit in the middle of that track, echoing through the trees at the time. I've never forgotten that. Was it any of you guys playing it??

Thinking about this again, I suppose the night I got my membership card would probably stand out as one of the best nights back then. Great sense of accomplishment getting that!

This is my very first post on this forum even if I have been lurking for a little while
![]() I am not even sure if its the right place but hearing the Ian Dempsey Breakfest Show this morning talking about the 32A film just brought all the memories flooding back ( must be old age). I went to the grove 77 - 81 and met my wife there and we are still married !. We owe so much to the music and to Cecil. I was from Fairview/Marino and went to Joeys and after a few false starts at their disco moved on to the Grove and never looked back. We - at least five/six of us, went every Saturday night and the fun we had - sometimes we walked home and the stories kept us going until we got home. Just talking about the music prompted me to find my box of singles from the attic - 74 pieces of vinyl in all with such gems as Dreamer, Carry On wayward Son, Home Thoughts From Abroad, At 17....... I could nearly host my own Grove Reunion ![]() I have booked two tickets for Friday Nights showing of 32A and we are really looking forward to seeing the film. My most abiding memory fo the Grove is being on the stage and watching Cecil and all the goings on. My favourite slow song was Stay With Me Till Dawn by Judie Tzuke and Dreamer by Supertramp for the fast sets. The Grove was such an intricate part of life in North Dublin and we owe so much to it. |

Welcome to the site PCPILOT!! I heard that interview this morning and I'm really looking forward to seeing the film too. There is a meet up for a drink before the film (thread on here somewhere!) you would be very welcome to join in. At some point we all turned up to drinks not knowing anyone so no time like the present!! |

Hi PCPILOT, I know this sounds like starting another follow on website but I too went to Joey's, I actually really loved the place (but for the life of me would not know who the dj was unlike the popularity Cecil had/has with the Grove) myself and my friends would go there on a Friday night and then on to the Grove on Saturday... Dreamer and Carry on my Wayword Son remind me so much of the place. Funny enough a lot of the lads we hung around with who were from Joeys followed us on to become Grove regulars too... Sandra |
