First gig I was ever at was Chris De Burgh in the RDS. This was when he was good and before he released Lady in Red.

Also went to see Ozzy in McGogles doing a Warm up for his world tour back in 1990-91

First " Big Gig " ever was Horslips at the National Stadium in 1978. I was 14 and was allowed go with two friends 'cos the 20B Bus went almost door to door in those days.

The gig was truly memorable for an impressionable teenager for lots of reasons, the atmosphere, the music, the sense of having grown up etc.

I'll never forget that night as it gave me the thirst for more of the same.

I'd been to McGonagles and The Dandelion to see a selection of local bands before that night, wonder does anyone remember any of the following who graced the local scene at the time.

The Atrix, DC Nein ( subsequently changed to Tokyo Olympics ) The New Versions,The Radiators, Rocky De Valera and The Gravediggers, The Bogey Boys ( never liked them or The Lookalikes )The Blades and of course U2.

Best ever Gig, couldn't pick one, think I posted this somewhere before...........

Top five, in no particular order,

Stones at the Point , had great seats. Waterboys one New Years Eve in the Top Hat in Dun Laoghaire,David Byrne at the Olympia,July '04, U2 Christmas '83 in The SFX and U2 Feb,'81 at The RDS and The Ramones at the now defunct TV Club in Harcourt St. in about '81 or '82.....................

Really love The Ramones...............One, Two, Three, Four.

Pete, just seen the Chris De Burgh thing.....................smiley11

All street cred painstakingly earned over the last few days has now flown unceremoniously out the window...............Chris de Bleedin' Burgh........................please.

Hey I was young and he was good ONCE upon a time.
We all made mistakes sometimes in out life I went with my brother and I was only about 13-14...
But I have made up for since with gigs I have been at...

Simple Minds U2 Metalica, Maiden, AC/DC, Plant & Page, Bowie, Springsteen, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Skid Row
also Jackson Prince Tina Turner to name but a few...

Hey the cred I achieve shouldn't be written that quick it was over 20 years ago since I went to Chris De Burgh and will stand up and say it was a good gig...
I just better not tell you  i have seen him live 4 times...D'OH!!!!!

No Pete, he was not good. Not ever. Sorry but he's always been complete and utter crap.

I mean whoever heard of God and The Devil playing cards on a train in Seville, or A Spaceman arriving at the manger in Bethlehem, bollix to that, spacemen hadn't even been invented 2006 years ago .................. and as for that Lonely Sky or Sailor, just don't get me started. I was having a pleasant day.

No,sorry Pete, there's absolutely no extenuating circumstances under which you're allowed pass any remotely favourable comments about that man.Don't care how young you were.

Never got to see AC/DC, a big regret of mine.

Arra Blondie, just having a laugh. Actually do hate him ( Chris, not Peter ) though.

Stepaside, now there's a name I haven't heard in years. Hadn't they about 6 or 7 members, think one had a saxaphone, really dredging through the recesses here.

So two things you hate are Man U and Chris De Burgh....

I suppose his songs are a little bit religious (Which I am not)

Really pushing out this topic out on a limb

Would have to agree and he's creepy !!!!

Stepaside great band lead singer Paul Ashford I think good looking lad !!!! and he could sing

anyhooo, my first gig was in the Top Hat in dun laoighre and headlining were THE QUIREBOYS , won the tickets on the rock show on D.L.R. , i'd just bought their album a bit of what you fancy and their first single 'hey you' had just come out..good gig, great live act.  and believe it or not i still have the ticket stub.

The worst gig I was ever at was by a band called Shadowtime
Anyone very hear of them ???? No
I think the band split on musical difference the band could play the singer couldn't sing or something like that
Why ? Ask Softlad

no comment,

just for the record the worst gig i was at would have to be a close run thing between natalie imbruglia in a sydney carpark and u2 in croke park (3rd night) , nothing wrong with u2's performance its just up the top of those stands i couldn't hear a damn thing.

Yes Lizzy were fantastic as was The Rolling Stores - although I must say I have seen some good acts in my time - loved Rod Stewert in the RDS he was a great show man.  Seen Bowie in Slane but not the best I have ever seen.  Hope to see Roger Water here in Sep and will give you a review of that.  Would like to see The Goo Goo Dolls when home but that remains to be seen.  The Eagles play June 11th I think at home and I hear they are great in concert - would love to see that but it's the day we leave I am thinking.

First gig. Horslips in Top Hat in Bray in 1972.

Have been to many gigs since. See Concert thread.

One gig that  was special was U2 in the Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia in USA in 1992.

Got tickets, special passes etc.. and it was amazing to see the rock gliteria in the USA lauding U2, one of our own.

Still have the pass badges etc..

And the Americans love U2, I mean really love them. It's amazing. U2 get knocked here but in USA they're mega.

Will always remember the hysteria at that gig when U2 were on stage.

Sorry Pat hope I did not insult you with the Dylan slam - I like some of his stuff - but it was a terrible venue for him - it's big and needed someone big to fill it - it was just not for him.  I don't think it was crowd pleasing.

Not at all........you're perfectly entitled to your opinion......I saw Dylan in Simmonscourt and the sound was crap. As a result I didn't enjoy the gig.

Was at Stones in Slane. Thought they were brill and George Thorgood & Destroyers best support act. J Geils Band were crap.

Eh...............No there isn't.

Let's see...............Hurricane     v     A spaceman Came Travelling

Knocking on Heaven's Door     v     Lonely Sky

              Positively 4th Street    v      ;Sailor

One More Cup of Coffee    v     Don't Pay the Ferryman

And that's just a few Dylan Classics of the top of my head.

Could go on and on but then I'll only get upset.

Agree with ya about U2 in the States. Same this time in New York ( although half the crowd were Irish )

Have been to see Dylan plat 5 or 6 times . Have to say some gigs were fantastic , Wembley arena supported by Tom Petty and Heartbreakers who were also great.

Other times not so good think it depends a lot on venue and how Dylan's feeling on the night.

Would have to say still enjoyed them all.

Last time I saw him was when he headlined the Fleadh in Finsbury Park also on form that night

 Hey BR

The first gig I went to was also Chris De Burgh in the RDS back in 1978 so your not alone. Everyone loved him back then...well everyone I knew and I would still play my Spanish train LP if i could find it.

The best gig for me would have to be Paul McCartney in the RDS and Ringo Starr in the Point. I'm a hugh Beatles fan and to see two of them play in Dublin was just a dream for me

I'll be second - I already fessed up on the previous thread and got a bit of sl*gging from none other than Rolo.  Is there a pattern emerging here I wonder?!!

Anyway - my first concert was Aha in 1985 in the RDS.  i make no apologies - I was young, Morten Harket was (and still) is gorgeous.  Anyway this doesn't fit into the now I think they're crap thing as I have their two latest albums and I listen to them regularly.  So there.  So put that in your pipes and smoke it!

ps to Rolo - for somebody who professes to hate the aforementioned CDB - you seem to know a fierce amount about his back catalogue???!!!!!!smiley2  Betcha Catherine is a big fan!

I agree with XGH... But the thing is Rolo has the cheek to sl*g us of for bands we liked in our youth....

And not once have I sl*gged him about a certain team that he follows relegated to the first division and they are only placed 4th in that league....
But I promise I want bring that up in here cause this is to do with our first gigs and our shamed bands from the past

Only a bit of sl*gging Xgh, and if I remember rightly you preceded it by saying that you expected it.

Catherine's never been a fan of you know who but her sister might have been so you can have it out with her at the next Reunion.

My own confession ?

All my old vinyl has been in my parents' garage for ten years and only rescued recently. Among the gems............................

Big Country,Meatloaf,Psychedelic Furs,Joan Armatrading,Gang of Four...........and a few more, all of whom escape me at the minute.

Genuinley never went to see anyone that I'd now consider crap, unless they were on the bill at a big festival or something.smiley14

Must've heard the songs in their gaff over the years.

Will make the point that surely one isn't in a position to declare total dislike for someone or something if one isn't familiar with said someone or something.

That'd be like saying ya don't like cabbage, never having tasted it.

Good point - and well made.

However not liking cabbage and not being a horticulturist - I couldn't name multiple varieties of said, smelly, yucky vegetable.

Would struggle to name any of their songs, so as previous logic dictates, I can't possibly hate them. Indifference, you could call it.

Hi Blondie

You said that you had a crush on Donny Osmond when you were 10yrs....well I went to see him in concert this year in the point and you would still have a crush on him today...he is still fab and he is now a grand-dad !! And I know it's Donny Osmond I'm talking about but he rocked the point, what a great night we had. And I will also confess to having a pair of BCR socks but sadly was not allowed to get a pair of trousers

Yeah Blondie.....Donny sang all the hits from Puppy Love to Crazy Horses and 12th of never and Let me in.....the show started a 8pm and finished around 11pm and everyone just sang their hearts out and danced in our seats. I would recomend that you go if he ever comes back....It really was a brill night. And the tickets were only 50 euro, not like George Michael asking for 85euro to 130 euro, would love to go to see him but would not be willing to pay that much.

Also remember a Tom Jones tv show vaguely. Cause I was so young back then I was bullied by my brothers and sisters and had no choice to watch them.

Come on everybody
It's gibbon time

We're the Goodies
How do you do?
We've just been down to the zoo
We saw a monkey in a cage
Doing a dance
That could be the rage
It's not hard
So let's all do the funky gibbon
Ooo, ooo, ooo

Do, do, do the funky gibbon
(The funky gibbon)
We are here to show you how
Ooo, ooo, ooo
Ooo, ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
He's just like you
So come on and do
The funky gibbon now

Dogs are always howlin'
Cats are always yowlin'
But gibbons only
Like to sing and dance
Oop, oop, sh boop

You'll be like that monkey
Get a little funky
And in a while
Start to smile
Gibbon half a chance

Do, do, do the funky gibbon
(The funky gibbon)
We are here to show you how
Ooo, ooo, ooo
Ooo, ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
(The funky gibbon)
He's just like you
So come on and do
The funky gibbon now

Ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
Ooo, ooo, ooo the funky gibbon

Gee, the world would be good
I ?????
Me, with just a little gibbon tea
Sha, la, la

We slap that gibbon
Oh, feel the rhythm
And you'll groove
And dance up to the planet of apes

Do, do, do the funky gibbon

We are here to show you how
Ooo, ooo, ooo
Ooo, ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
(The funky gibbon)
He's just like you
So come on and do
The funky gibbon now

Ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
Ooo, ooo, ooo the funky gibbon

Ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
Ooo, ooo, ooo the funky gibbon

Now everybody get ready
To do the funky gibbon
Drop one arms down by your knees
And the other arm
Reach up to the trees

Let your wrist go limp
Like a bent baboon
Get ready to sing
This gibbon's tune

Will you give me an ooo
(Ooo)
Will you give me another ooo
(Ooo)
And will you give me an ooo
(Ooo)
Now put 'em together
What've you got
(Ooo, ooo, ooo)

Do, do, do the funky gibbon
We are here to show you how
Ooo, ooo, ooo
Ooo, ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
(The funky gibbon)
He's just like you
So come on and do
The funky gibbon now

Ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
Ooo, ooo, ooo the funky gibbon

Ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
Ooo, ooo, ooo the funky gibbon

He promised to buy me
A bunch of blue gibbons
To tie up my bonny brown

Ooo, ooo, the funky gibbon
The funky gibbon

Signed by Tim Billy and Graham

Here is another one for you

Up above the streets and houses,
Rainbow climbing high.
Everyone can see it climbling
Through the sky.

Paint the whole world with a rainbow!

Up above the streets and houses,

   rainbow climbing high,
Everyone can see it smiling over
   the sky.
Paint the whole world with a
   rainbow.

All along the streams and rivers,
   shining in the lakes,
See the colours of the rainbow as
   the morning breaks.
Paint the whole world with a
   rainbow.

Red, the colour of a sunrise,
White clouds floating in a sky of
   blue,
Green for the rivers,
Gold for the cornfields,
The day is shining new.

Red, the colour of a sunset,
Grey shadows creep across the
   hills,
The sun is sinking, colours are
   fading,
The fields are dark and still.

Take some green from a forest,
   blue from the sea,
Find the misty pot of gold,
And mix them for a week.
Paint the whole world with a
  rainbow.

Red, the colour of a sunrise,
White clouds floating in a sky of
   blue,
Green for the rivers,
Gold for the cornfields,
The day is shining new.
