Why was it we girls used to spend so much time in those grotty toilets?!!! Of course, it was a refuge during the slow set, when you knew some ug was going to ask you up so that he could swallow your entire head (shudder).
It was also of course pretty handy for hiding from the bouncers if you were a bit, uhm, worse for wear. Unless of course it was raided which was often enough.
It was also a scene of much desperation when you really needed the loo - some even used to try and convince those in front they were more entitled as they were pregnant - all 7 stone of them. We were wise to their ways though
It was also the scene of girls badly applying white makeup and purple lips - we could have done with a helping hand from Ruby & Millie! Very much a trial and error process. It was particularly difficult if a Dolly Mixture (complete with left over shampoo) or a couple of cans of ritz had been consumed in Saint Annes park!!

Hi Frog Princess welcome aboard Know what you mean about the loos we also used to use them to consume any alcohol we managed to sneak in and also to talk about the "boys" who were our particular favourites that week

Hi FP,
Welcome on board.
I remember we used to hang out outside the girls loo in the "old" Grove.
Usually a good vantage point for spying on possible female targets

I remember one particular instance being in the loo with about 4 other girls who were drinking - I wasn't, for some odd reason - anyway, the bouncers raided the loo, pushed the door in, resulting in a cut below my eyebrow. Of course not wanting the old pair to know, I let them patch me up and back out into the hall...they wouldn't get away with it in this day and age!!!

A ha thats where all the girls hid.. If you though the girls tiolets were bad just try and think what the guys toilet were like. Sick and Pee on the seats floor walls handles... Sorry thats a bit too graphic..
It use to be amazing standing on the packed floor of The Grove and then all of a sudden a mass exodus of girls out of the doors when first song of the slow set came on...
Oh welcome to the Forum

Hello Frog Princess ( I just can't bring myself to call you Froggy ) and welcome to the nuthouse.
From your description of the application of the white make up and the purple lippy,I gather your Grove Era was late eighties, early nineties.
I actually went to McGonagles before I ever went to the Grove, as a kid I was well up on the local music scene and used go to McGonagles to see bands like The Atrix, DC Nein and The New Versions . This would have been around 1980.
After the Grove finished for us,( 1985 ) 'fraid it was straight to the boozer. A few of them on here went to the Cricket Club or out to Saints in Howth.

Yes indeed I was an 88 - 90 girl alright. I was determined that I would never end up going to the Cricket as there was a girl across the road whose father used to insist on accompanying her. The horror!!!!
Is it just me or has Cecil been taking taking magic anti-aging pills? I saw him at the Christmas bash and he hasn't changed a bit!!!

During the above time I also went out to the trendier clubs in town with my brother and mates I was the yougest and went to Tamangos, Saints(Charlies), Flamingoes, but always went back to the Grove

Pete, when I was a ( wait for this ) student, we had our Freshers thingy in McGonagles and a band called Sweet Savage were the headline.
Who should join them on stage for three numbers only Philo. Would have been 1982.
Great night altogether.

Not see it? Not read back on all the posts I missed? Some hope!!
And if you'd been paying attention several hundred pages ago on some thread or other - you'd have noticed that I never went to the Cricket and I'm bloody proud of it too! I considered it selling out. McGonagles, Fibbers and the pub for me. (ok there were one or two nites in Hollywood sh*tes but that was peer pressure and I didn't enjoy it)
And welcome to Froggy!

God I remember the toilets alright, I used to have my vodka and cans on the way up and I used to sneak a coke bottle full of mixture in with me. J
esus the thoughts of what was in that and I used to think it was lovely, come to think of it so did alot of the girls, people used ask me to bring them a bottle and they'd buy it off me the next week!!
Everything from the drink cupboard went into it vodka, whiskey, gin, pernod, schnapps, brandy and whatever I could find.... my god how did we ever drink that crap???????
|

did you take the drink from the bottles and leave them as is or did you (like me) put a little water back into the bottles to make them look sorta the same...I had a bad experience when a friend of my parents (who dont drink) came around and asked for a whiskey and commented on the watery nature of the whiskey..me =

No then it would have been pure water by the time I got to the end, my parents used to mark the bottles with a tiny nick with their nail along the sticker so I used to re nick it, the just thought it was my older brothers and sisters(who knew to nick the sticker wheb they were finished).
He He He how did my parents not think they were alco's?

The toilets!!! yuck they were the most disgusting things about the grove. Little sink with masses of hair in it.....
alas...
I have to say, I have this one friend at home and guess how I met her, we both drank too much and were throwing up into the sink together..... sad or what..... yes we have been friends ever since. In the midst of it all we stopped for a mo to introduce ourselves...she was on mad women back then.

If those walls in the toilets could talk !!!!! Shame they didn't show
them in the documentary....would of bringing back some memories for
most of us girls....the conversations and the drinking and the throwing
up that went on in there was priceless.....reckon a good book could
come out of it

Yeah Bluebell, my fella is in 2nd year so we've been in the school quite a bit over the last year or so.
Cecil's right, very little has changed. Thing that struck me most was how small the hall was. My memories were of this huge cavern, packed to the rafters with millions of sweaty teenagers bouncing up and down ( to the music of course ).
The first time we went in for the open day,it was real strange all right. That was before I went to a Reunion or came on here.

Rolo.....I would love to go back into the hall and just stand in the
place where we stood for all those years shaking our brain cells to
death.....Next time they have an open day, let us all know....we could
all grab Cecil , run down to the hall and have a unplanned grove
reunion...can you just imagine all the teacher faces ....although come to think of it, some of the teachers probably went to the grove with us

Rolo you mentioned Sweet Savage up there somewhere. Well when I went to see the stones years ago - I thought the line up was Rose Tatoo and Sweet Savage, it was either the stones or Thin Lizzy - memory fading fast....

Nice thought Bluebell, but from the ones I've seen, they're either too old,too young or from such far flung parts of the country that they wouldn't be able to pronounce the word " Grove " properly.
Yeah T, Sweet Savage would've been on the circuit around that time all right. Rose Tattoo, Aussie band, haven't heard that name in a long time.
One night in McGonagles,Sweet Savage played at the NIHE ( DCU ) Freshers Ball, and Philo got up on stage with them and did " Don't Believe a Word " and " Are You Ready ".
We were right at the front of the stage. Great thrill to be so close to the great man. Would've been November 1982.
Feck, just realised I'd posted this already, sorry folks.

Bluebell - keep an eye out for a Crafts fair around Christmas in the St Pauls school hall. I went last year and was transported back to the good days. It was a good 15 mins before I was able to look at teh crafts on sale which incidentally were very good - did a good bit of the chrimbo shopping that day. I'll post when I see it advertised.
