Hi Teresa,

God, I used to love that chipper too. When did you go to the cricket? I probably tried to skip in front of you at the bar!!!

Used to walk home from there too. No wonder I was fit back then. Couldn't do it now!!

In '72 we had'nt a bean left after the Grove.

On the motorbikes, home. meet top Celtic Park, few smokes and raid the Ma's fridge, that is unless you scored

You lucky people, having a leisurley walk to the chipper after the Grove. We had other important things to do - like face the long walk to Howth if we hadn't managed to get a lift. Remember once getting a lift home in a milk truck. Those were the days.

Went to Tamangos also - Tuesday night was 99p night was it not... yeap saints on Monday for 99p night then Tamangos stayed in on Wednesday then down the pub Thursday and back to basics on Friday for the ritual to start again....... Also went to the Summit...

Later went to the Waterfront - did that for a long time and would end up in Leeson Street some of those nights and straight out for breakfast.....

Sure it's no wonder all the brain cells are gone!!!

Would have taken a drink there around 1977 - 1982.

Was there 2 years ago to see Sean O'Connor (guitarist with Lookalikes, an old friend) play a gig.

Lesley, The Baggot was sold about ten years ago and pulled to the ground with the idea that it would be rebuilt and re opened. To date the construction work has been at a standstill for quite a while. Pity really. Saw some great gigs in there over the years.

Freddie White, DC Nein, The Atrix, Stepaside...............

Can't get decent late night food like that in Perth!!

Pubs close too early. Can you imagine, my local chipper closes at 8.30pm - even at the weekend.

Alas Lesley, Abrakebabra is gone - it became another kebab spot, now  its Dixie Chicken or something!
The old cinema next door became a furniture outlet, then a morning newspaper place - ' Dublin Daily - what Dublin's getting up to!' catchy! didn't last! now its a newsagents & off licence!

Thanks guys for the laughter and tears.

Now I have to start going out and buying the old cd's again (see I didn't say records) trying to keep up with technology.

Hey finno, It's sad to see the city changing so much like that. At least we've got better memories than the teenagers today. They don't seem to have the same camaraderie we all had.

I can remember going down to the grove even when my close friends weren't going. You just went on your own, knowing that you had lots of people there you knew. Couldn't do that today.

Can't Believe the all the talk of the ol places like the baggot and cricket club..

Winter's regin .....they were knocking round and were reputed to be the top rock band on the circut ! went to see them once. musicians in other bands were a little jealous of their keyboard players DX7 ...We used to say "well if he's got one of those they must be good "..

I heard storys of rivalry between themselves and other bands and as Rolo said  I'm sure there's a good story in there somewhere.

real shame about the baggot inn ....which I loved ! I was on holiday in Kerry a few years ago. Freddie White was playing there .....I was chuffed .He hasn't changed much at all and still does a great gig .

Think I posted this somewhere before..but years ago... teenage years in fact..I played on the hallowed stage of the Baggot... we were support to Those Nervous Animals ( remember "My Friend John" ) and it was a nerve wracking experience..and I remember I was meeting some friends later and we were heading to Rumours...eek!! so I was dressed in a shirt and tie so we could get in there...and singing bluesy rock stuff ..and the crowd were a real new romanticy kinda crowd...but the lads in TNA were really nice guys I remember....

Just another smokey memory....but nice to be able to say I "Played" The Baggot" ..hehehe!!

Last gig I saw at the Baggot was Engine Alley.  Didn't know the place was gone.  A disgrace really considering it's musical heritage. Sad....Places are never the same after the sanitising police have been in look at what they did to Bad Bob's Backstage Bar just not the same anymore.

Anyone remember The Underground in Dame Street

Saturday, Moran's hotel, gig by U2 or rather not very early days a friend was doing sound and u2 ,pat and myself were there in the afternoon. The pa system that had been hired was in the van and we were waiting for someone to turn up with the keys. After an hour hour and a half we were then told that there would be no gig! Next 1/2 hour was a big debate as to how to pay for the hire of the pa.

Ireland is a changed place now. In Bayside Sutton the chip shop "munchies" clises at 8.3 because of public order issues (scrotes hanging around). We moved when the scrotes started ruling the madhouse. Violence is common place now among teenagers. Enjoy Perth, at  least the weather is better

We were at a little party on Halloween night! Friends up the road cook a big pot of chilli every year before the trick or treating starts.  Anyhow a few of us meet there each year!!!! One of the couples had their house broke into while they were there... went feckin home to a ransacked house... !!!! we live in a nice area with our own police and still our bikes are robbed and car's are broken into!!! pisses me off.

Your right it is common place.

ARD 257 DJ: Delighted you keep the kissing clean!!! never could do that myself.  Watched someone once kiss the face of their dog and I nearly threw up..... the very idea of him licking his arse!!!!!

Hi ARD 257 DJ,

With the chippers closing that early, you'd nearly have to go to the pub at lunchtime, to be guaranteed munchies afterwards.

Finno, too early in the morning here to think about a man licking a dogs arse!!!

Hi Irish Mammy

Yeh they closed down Bad Bobs to refurbish it and it reopened a few years ago.  It is now a bright and shiney bar like all the other bright and shiney bars, got no soul not like the old place which had lots of character even if it was a filthy death trap.  There used to be some good crack there all the same till the early hours.  Got to see some great rockin bands there.

Jeez - now yer bringing me back...

I used to do lights and sound for Winter's Reign in the Ivy Rooms and the Baggot - great, great times. Used to have a laugh with the support bands - and borrowing their gear if it was (and often was!) better than our own (remember when the "superoverdrive" pedal came out?). On one VERY MEMORABLE evening, Def Leopard walked in the door and passed the stage when the support bang were playing one of their songs... anyone remember the name of the band? Conor McNee (?) on guitar, Paul Smith (later No Sweat) on keys...

The rivalry was more spoken of than actual - the jealously and badmouthing rather endearing now I look back on it. Lovely bunch of lads - unfortunatly naive and too-working-class to handle the mngt - got totally ripped off & kicked out of their own band - a shame...

I remember esp. doing a few supports in the SFX and getting a few shouts out from the gang from the Grove / Brusels / MacGs - the lads were pissed that I got more name calls than them ;-))

Yeah its not fair. Those days are long gone. We got so much exercise roaming the streets you could eat anything and not put on weight.

My brother still goes to Macari's for fish'n'chips at the weekend. Reckon's they're better than anywhere else. He also buys the vinegar from them. He loves it. Says it better than the stuff in the shops.

Oh I can just smell a single now. Happy days.

How long have you been down under?  My brother spent time there and loved it but he's in US now too.  Do you get home often? I would love to get to a reunion but I'm rarely home anymore . . don't have time.  I'm working on my Ph.D. here in Florida.

God would I love to tell some of the nuns at MH that!!!!!

I think they set up in the early eighties.  I usto work in a garage opposite The Belcamp Inn in Coolock and I can remember them pulling in for petrol towing the Chip Van (real Asian Roddy Doyle!).  I remember hearing at the time that they were some of the Vietnamese boat people.

OMG, that looks dodgy! Can't imagine that guy scampering too quickly through thorny trees!

That Vietnamese van was amazing - there were 2 staff, sometimes 1, and the menu was massive though it looked like there were only 2 or 3 pots bubbling away inside. It must've been a Tardis.

Lesley - the Cosy is still there all right - passed it tonight and 2 of the guys working there, I used to see them around when they were  toddlers! The mum's still there and looks the same.

ShayG

Love your Pikey avatar. Gave me a good laugh, thanks.

Teresa, a bit worried about where you find these pictures and links to those strange sites.

A bit more alcohol is required

and a little less surfing the web

Roundy is it the same woman? probably is. Your tardis theory isn't far wrong. My dad put central heating in a lot of the vietnamese houses in coolock. Amazing the amount of people who lived in one house. Kitchen always had something bubbling in pots. They never stopped working.

This is my second late night/early morning on this forum. I'm glad to say it's getting addictive and a bit like "The Twilight Zone" hearing about how well everyone is doing around the world. Like the RTE show said, we have a lot to thank Cecil and the Grove for in helping form our characters.

Hey Freebrid, I used to enjoy Freddie White and also Jimmy Slevin and his famous echo chamber at Moran's. Zorba the Greek was a big favourite. Used to hang out with a crowd from Kincora Ave on our Kawasakis. Halcyon days!

Welcome Muller - yes the site does get adictive. Can't count the dinners I 've burnt or times the kids have been late for school since I have found this site.

Sitting here at the end of the earth. This site has brought back so many memories and laughs. Great meeting up with some of the old Grovers again

Remember the name Jimmy Selvin- but never saw him.

Just had a look at that site. It's funny. There's moaning about ice-cream not made in Dublin but eaten in Dublin and thats close enough!!!

Thanks again for the help with the flyer. Printed them up and they look grand.

Owe you a pint or two.
