Well being a bloke and going to the Grove only with blokes it was essential that you ended up with a good looking girl during the slow sets. If she turned out to be a bit rough then you were guaranteed to get slaughtered by your friends over it. And if you ended up with no one that was even worse. It was almost like having the plague. Watching all your mates shifting chicks while your sitting on the ice cold plastic chairs wondering where your life went so terribly wrong.

Was this the same for the girlies out there?

Flumphy

It was exactly the same for the girls.

I don't think it was so bad for us....for starters, we didn't have to do the asking. We could always go for a smoke or to the loo thereby removing ourselves from the possibility of even being asked, and we had the option to say no......

So if your friends were all going with someone and you didn't want to be a wallflower you just did a Houdini

I seem to recall that there was a group of lads and lassies hung out together so you weren't always left on ones own. But you had to be careful not to get in the way of young lust at times!

I agree with Esthalon think it was much easier for us girls.

My memory is lads outnumbering girls 2 to 1 anyway so better odds for us

I can remember running to the door when the slow sets came on just in case you got asked to dance by someone you didn't want to dance with...... And then hanging around near the guys that you were "praying" would ask you to dance.....sometimes we got lucky, but most times

Starter Chat Up lines during Slow Sets....

What were the most popular or the most idiotic I wonder????

Had to have been.....

(A) " Do you come here often ? ".

Oh dear....that was quite sad AND definitely muttered the most.....

followed by ( if they couldnīt guess by your clothes )...

(B) " What are ye into ? "....

then the dreaded.....( if the guy was a creature, cyclops etc )

(C) " want to head outside ? ".......

of course if he was a "bang" then you were made up as you were pulled by the hand, hopefully through a gang of female pals looking on with that " lucky cow " glance and you trying to appear to being dragged against your will !!!

....to a vacant space in the infamous Compound....

Must be better one liners.....

Canīt think of them right now....possibly due to the fact my head is filled with kids homework, laundry and dogs hassling to head out on their constitutional....

I think it was definitely more difficult being the boy on these occassions. I mean, we were the ones supposed to do the asking, we had to gather the balls up to approach you, single you out in front of all your friends and then inevitably face rejection. It took me a while to remember to check my self-respect in at the cloakroom with my jacket at the start of the night and collect it at 1am, in order to have any kind of success during the slow sets... But then I discovered Autumn Gold, Fosters, Budweiser... This changed things dramatically - who cares if she says no, just move on and ask the next one - the chances were, you're bound to come across somebody else who's just looking for a bit of a mooch and doesn't mind being groped for the rest of the evening.

But then there were the days when the blue moons were shining and a girl would approach you - "Will you dance with me mate?". This was music to my ears. You could just sit back and let her worry about coming up with all the cheesy one-liners! Those were the days...

Ah bluebell,

Where's the fun in that. When your teen comes home with that look on their face you can say truthfully " I know how that feels"

and then go off and laugh at them!!!

I think it's called payback for all the times they did to you what you did to your parents.

Janey mack,

Mad remembering this one..

as far as I can recall, the only lads I wanted to get asked up by were the cool lads in the alcove. And as far as i was concerned i was way out of their league (pathetic i know now), they were also a few years older than me. The gang i was with didn't hang around the alcove so i had to pluck up the courage and go sit there with my mate (who was dragged ) to get my face in their . I had no probs chatting to them which was lucky. I'm mostly not shy, but have my moments.

When the slowsets went on (before i got the guts to hang out in the alcove) I used to leg it out into the hall way. Didn't want to get asked up again by some tiny guy. I always seemed to get asked up by really small lads and lads that seemed really young! and of course i got asked up by my fair share of freaky doods.

Finally got hooked up with an alcove guy that i was interested in for ages, I was smitten.. ahhh those were the days, thought i was such a rock chic

Pretty sure C played in my time. Even now, most of the songs that reverberate around in my head I know from the Grove and this is definitely one. A classic slow song. talking about slow songs always reminds me of Batchelors Walk the time that Ray and Barry are the disco and talk about walking back to their seats bent over.

He's in the states now as far as I know, it went a bit awkward in the end with us.. kind of like Romeo & Juliette! My folks didn't approve of him cos he was a "Bum" with long hair  ( i told them they were snobs and had huge rows with them over that) I was only around 16 .  I reckon it was more likely that they were afraid I was getting too serious about him cos they could see how much time we were spending together and he was about 2 years older than me. They more or less ordered me to break up with him or else no more Grove or going anywhere. It was sh*t cos I really liked him, we kept it going as long as we could but then we ended up breaking up anyway cos it was just so much grief for us.

He was cool though and he probably was the major influence that helped make Led Zep my favourite band. We never really played any other music when we were together

If he is out there somewhere... Thanks U, I had a great time with you and you made my life very Rock N' Roll for a few months

Remember the 'alcove' just off the alcove? It was a little corridor, except it wasn't long enough to be a corrider. It was between the aclove and the end of the long corrider, just where the Kit Kats were sold for a while. It was about 4ft by 4ft,the light never worked and was just perfect for that intimate moment! God,we had no scruples then...

There used to be scrambles for that spot...if there was no-one in it you would grab your other half and say 'Quick-it's free!'

Or if it wasn't held up by young lovers then it's purpose was for someones friend to 'sort out' someone else's friend and solve their problems.

Or often a place where people got dumped!

(That never happened to me...!)

Do you remember during the slow sets, the last song would finish, and if the dance  (plus whatever went along with the dance) was going well, you'd just keep on dancing? Right through Whole lotta Rosie or something, just keep waltzing slowly around and around, people banging into you but you just couldn't let go???

Mad...

What I loved about the slow sets was if you did have the courage to ask up someone, and she said yes,and it was going well (as in chat was flowing etc),well if her hands moved from a 'back off' position on your shoulders to down around your waist, and she didn't seem blotto, then that was good.If those hands pulled you towards her slightly then that was better. After that,it was your move. (I was asked one night 'What's taking you so long?'-must've been a Manor Houser!)

What wasn't so good was 'OK thanks' after the first song. (NEVER happened to me,of course...hee hee!)

Or I hated it when I heard ';Hey-I went to school with your sister' or 'I used to go out with your friend'. Oh oh...

Of course the lady's choice was great-that really put the contest going among the lads...

Funny how a lot of bands where like that back then. When the money dries up they play everywhere.

Here in Perth (the most isolated city in the world) we have had so many bands come here over the last year. Money runs out, they play everywhere.

Liked Clifford T. Ward. Agree with you, he's an idiot for that.

Did anyone else wear glasses? When I had a thick plastic pair (both lenses and plastic were thick!), I used leave them at home on Saturday evenings.

Then, I'd spend the first part of the slow set desperately trying to squint round a darkened hall trying to spot the good looking girls. No wonder they all had time to come up with their excuses....

And trying to make sure to avoid Tonto with his long hair, eyeliner and nail varnish?

Yep 'Snapper, although reckon mine were a bit trendier than yours. Stopped wearing them when I was 16 around the time I started going.

However, I am wearing them in the pic. on my Membership Card.
