Well did any of you make New Years Resolutions and if so have you stuck with them ?

Me - made loads - havent stuck with any of them YET.  Like walk the kids to school instead of drive ...... havent done that - Eat Healthy instead of junk food ..... The Kebabs in Kebab Palace are toooooo tempting to refuse !  Drink less ........... Ok instead of getting pint bottles of Bulmers at last orders - I am only getting one and two Tia Marias - soooooooooooooo im not drinking as much liquids right !!! SMOKING - OH MY GOD - Im off them now - well since last night - and am gagging for one - I really really want one - NO I DONT - but I really do !!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah sure eventually I will go off the fags and not worry about cravings or anything like that will I ????

Im 3 days off the cigarettes and am dying ! No not really Im doing okay but its soooooooo hard - Im doing the patches at the mo and am reading Alan Carrs book - However he just died of lung cancer!! His book is a bit odd - its kinda brainwashing stuff and alot is repeated - anyone else read it and did it work ?? The patches are irritating me - I just feel really itchy with them on !!! Now I feel better that I got that out of my system !!!

D...Keep it  up....You're doing great.....I'm off them 7 years now, it's such a relief not to be governed by the ciggies. They say it takes 3 days to get over the nicotine...the rest is all about moving on and getting into new habits. You've done the hard bit so stick with it!!!!

Off the cigs 10 months (at least 30 a day) Stick with the patches. Just dont put them in the same spot as it will irritate the skin. 6 weeks of patches and haven't touched a cig since.

Well done Delia for trying to give them up, I know it's hard but you can do it and it will be sooooo worth it in the end. I gave them up two years ago and health wise I have never felt better.....I actually hate cigarettes now. My kids are also so proud of me. Never read Alan Carrs book but I know some friends who did and it worked for them, most of my friends don't smoke anymore. Keep trying you will get there

I want to stick to a good fitness program and continue to drop weight.  I plan on staying off the beer (not the vino mind) and keep to a good healthy diet.

Still walking every night (only through the town mind) but no drink save one night since new years.

My God I'm going to be legless after 1 pint on 17th...

(We agreed we'd have a jar on 'occassions' so it's allowed...)

At this point its about changing habits as much as anything. When you feel you need a cigarette, do something different even for a few minutes all you need is to distract yourself for a few minutes and the craving will pass.

Its possible to succeed. I'm off them 16 years.

Hey BB, I stopped smoking two years ago. I had already stopped when I read Alan Carr's book. I found it great, just to reinforce the point taht there is no point in smoking. Working so far. However, I had a major lifestyle change - stopped drinking, went to gym and diet etc. because of a remark a friend made about my weight one night outside the oub when we were having smoke. It made me think about my life and stuff. hHaven't looked back. The personal trainer said I have the consitution of someone half my age. the locum doctor couldn't belive I was 50. Gave me a big head but it's bloody hard work keeping the discipline.

Fair play Muller, I really hope I can make the same change.  It is certainly my goal.  My hubby is much like you although he has not given up the drink yet.  He gave up the smoking years ago and is a loyal gym person and turns 50 this year and looks really good for it.

I'd love to be able to walk to work. I tried it one tome when i was living in Raheny. It was great but could not do it every day. One time I tried greeting people along the way. Most people responded amicably but other look at you as if you are mad if you say "good morning" to them.

Aside T - I broke my drink fast at the reunion and stayed over in Sheiling. It was worth it.

Im still doing well - hard but getting there - im eating so much though but feck it - started walking yesterday - walked about 5k - down to Bettystown and then back up along the beach - the sand was soft so it was a hard enough walk on the way back but I actually feel as if my lungs are opening up - Jimmy told me that I am like an anti christ - and there was me thinking I was like that all the time ! We off out tomorrow night for a few drinks so that is going to be hard for me as everyone we are going out with are smokers !!!

Still off the dreaded cigs ! Was just working out that I was smoking for 22 years - when you think of it - so say 10 a day for 5 years - total 18,200 cigs for five years - then I went onto 20 a day for 17 years that 7,280 a year = 123,760.00 = total 141,960 cigarettes and if you take into consideration the extras you smoke ! so I have smoked about 150,000 cigarettes so far in my life - is that totally gross or what !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lads, just carrying this thread on a bit.....................

Wondering if any one has any plans to do anything for Lent, now that all those New Year's Resolutions have fallen by the wayside.

I'm gonna nail me colours to the mast here and take the risk that I might cause one or several of you regular Forum contributors to fall off your chairs,or indeed to crash your cars, by stating here and now and for all to see, that I fully intend to stay off the gargle for the whole 40 days and 40 nights.

Shar, if you dare open a book on how long I'll last.............

Reckon Tom Byrne will just about survive, anyway, there's more margin in the bleedin' soft drinks.

Still intend showing up on the 9th, assuming it's still the 9th.

One thing though , is it safe to park a car in downtown Balbriggan ?

Will do my usual lenten fast - one meal and two collations is the stric definition, but I go with eat three times and nothing in between. No desserts / crisps / sweets during a meal.

I don't give up the gargle, but have absolutely no soakage when I do get a few pints so it's a disaster area for hangover and stunbling around like an amadan. Even worse then normal....

Good for the soul possibly, but definitely good for the weight.....
