Topic: Presentation to Cecil ?
Posted By: Sister1
Subject: Presentation to Cecil ?
Date Posted: 12-March-2007 at 22:28

With only a month to go to the Easter Reunions, would it be feasible to get someone together as a presentation to Cecil to mark the occasion. I for one think 30 years of the Grove was a very rare and special thing, possibly never to be repeated. Cecil is the man, who week in and week out made it all happen. And 40 years later, the draw is still as special and powerful. How about we mark it in some way for the man himself. You all saw what it meant to him on the RTE Documentary. He really deserves it.

Any ideas as to what we could do ?

This came up before on an earlier thread,Sister1-even Crusty was overwhelmed with all kinds of suggestions and he said he would leave that up to us.

But you're right-he deserves something.

Seeing as we have lots of photos of the re-unions (I have some with Cecil dancing) I thought of a montage framed. I don't have any from the actual Grove itself but thay are out there and we can scan them.

My printer is not working though!

Any other ideas?

A mate enquired of RTE about getting copies of a previous documentary (the famous Roddie Collins one). RTE do them for a couple of hundred or so.

would a copy of the documentary be a good way? If it was done in a nice frame and official edition and all that? I'll ask Mick what the details were again and if it sounds like a runner can post what I've found out.

But you're right, the montage of photos would be a lot better and more personal, which would be great.

I love the idea of a montage of photos

It would be great to get old photos from years ago and new photos from the reunions all together in one big frame showing the last 40 years.
I know there is a place in Wicklow that does them professionaly, but it costs around 200 euro.

Another idea.....how about getting a tree planted (maybe in St Annes) in his honour? I know this is getting quite popular to do now, but don't know how you go about doing it ?

Guys,

the suggestions are great - - is anyone going to take the lead and get them going - time is running out and some of these would take a bit of time.

I'm quite willing to contribute money but unfortunately don't have the time to organise -

Let me know the final decision and who to send /give the money to.

cheers

Lads great idea i think the documentary framed or something would be a brill idea like his own little gold disc...he could treasure it always as much as we have treasured our days down the Grove

If some1 organises it I will deffo throw in a few bob just let me know who and where

But we need to get the finger out..time is running out

OK-for a start I will organise a photo montage.

If ANYONE has photos from the Grove, even the ones previously posted on 'Grove Pictures' thread send them to me at mailto:martinkilbride@eircom.net - martinkilbride@eircom.net and I'll get something organised.

On the night we could all write something on the back of the frame or something (would need a bloody big frame).and it could be at least something we can give him.

Anything else???

I think the tree idea is great also.

But lads, we can't forget Crusty also for being the person that got it all going again.... In fairness, if it wasn't for Crusty there wouldn't be reunions for Cecil to appear at or us to enjoy and re-trace our memories.

Maybe a small frame of photos for Crusty too.

As someone who is probably closest in age to Cecil and have accumulated most of the things I wanted in life and anything of interest I can always buy.
The things that are most important to me are the affection and appreciation of family and friends.
This is why my suggestion is something as simple as a thank you or appreciation card.
I am sure that flicking through hundereds of cards will make him a very happy man in his later years.(Frank)

Great idea Monarch

Just thinking how about having some sort of book that ppl could sign as the were entering the reunions leaving a special message for Cecil

And then it could be presented to him at the end of sunday nights reunion im sure he would love to read what ppl have to say about their grove yrs..........I dunno if it could be done with so many ppl about just my pennys worth

I think that is a good idea Monarch particularly for myself as I am missing the reunion. At least I can post mine to one of you guys and it can get passed on...a large box full of individual hand written notes or cards is something that is easily done.

The montage or a conventional photo album could be added also...

A nice box of goodies for him to reflect on, read over as many times as he wants and then store safely for the next time he wants to trip down memory lane..

Nod of Approval for that one from me anyhow.

Maybe we could incorporate all those ideas! The idea of the tree planting is fantastic as it could be "shared" with Cecil.

Those living nearby can show their kids - "look what we did cos it was important to us". Sends a great message to the kids. Maybe even get someone from RTE etc to attend a tree planting service.

Sending a card sounds fantastic as a lot of us couldn't attend a ceremony or the reunions.

The book is excellent too.

Great ideas people.

OK-have got someone in the printing business onto the photo-picture case. He wants to actually merge all the photos (I was thinking of simply sticking them in a frame) and he wants the Grove logo too.

Most of the pictures I have are from  the latter re-unions,so again,if ANYONE has actual Grove pictures from 'back in the day' either scan them or post them to me. Time is a runnin' out...

(Thanks for those already sent)

Hi Guys, great to see such enthusiam about this whole presentation thing
for
Our'Cess! Top form. By the way, Crusty doesn't want any presentation or
token, he asked me to tell you that! But thanks for the thought Star! He'll
be happy if you all turn up.
Anyway, I don't know what irish_mammy had in mind, but I have a contact
for Marty, and perhaps he might be persuaded to come along and make
the
presentation on everyone's behalf, unless anyone had anything else in
mind.
That'll be my only suggestion and contribution to this, unfortunately my
plate is full trying to think of ways of letting the entire population of
Dublin
know that there's a 40th anniversary reunion of this old northside disco
called "The Grove". Sorry I can't be of anymore help. Best of luck with this.
I
really love the whole tree idea thing too. That's just a great and original
idea.
Is someone following up on that? Imagine that?! You're own tree in a
public
park?!
P.S. Why is it when you edit a post, that the layout goes all arseways?
Anyone? Killian?

Martin am I too late to mail you a pic?  Think the tree idea is great - I think St Anne's would be the ideal spot - how about approaching Dubin City Council and asking if we buy and provide the tree and a dedication plaque would they let it be planted in the park?  They'd get lovely publicity out of it in the local press!!

Forgot to say Martin - count me in for splitting the cost of all this and thanks for taking the bull by the horns.

Great ideas here but dont want to put a spanner or anything in the works but when do we give them to Cecil - do we do two books - one for each night or what ?

Naturally, we dont want anyone out of pocket for anything here so what if we get 1.00 off everyone as they come through the door and put it aside and pay for the books, montage etc and whatever, if anything is left then we just donate it to charity. If everyone was agreeable wasn't one of the members collecting for a little girl (sorry cannot remember members name or the little girls !!!!) there was a doo on in the Shieling for her - what if we donate whatevers left for her ????

Regarding the tree you do need permission from Dublin City Council but it looks as if Rolo is on the job !!!

Right lads, quick update on the tree situation.

Spoke to the City Council man last night who said that as a rule they don't allow dedicated tree planting in the Park and defo no plaques of any nature.

What he did say however, was that as part of their general planting programme they would permit a particular tree to be planted for someone but only those in the know would know about it etc etc.

As I said, this would have to be done as part of their general programme in a location specified by them and during their planting season which runs from November to February.................

Back to Square One....................maybe in the grounds of St. Paul's ???????

OK Guys...sending the pictures off to my mate who's doiing Cecil's 'Monatge'. Mostly from the re-unions but a couple of Grove cards and some from seventies/eighties too.

Feel a bit of a scrooge saying this but I believe the cost of this will be about €90:00 (frame, print etc)

If it turns out to be a bit less than that well I'll give the remainder to Crusty to go with the fund so if anyone feels like putting their hand in pocket...

(€1 from 90 people? €2 from 45 people??? something like that)

Anyway-Irish Mammy had the idea of a T Shirt thing...I'm going to bring just a plain white T-shirt on the night and a marker...you can all right on it what you want...then we'll give it to him as well...this OK?

Delighted to say Cecils picture is ready...my printer man did the deed.

Very happy with it I have to say-although I had hoped it would print bigger. Some of the images didn't allow this however (low resolution) but it should be about 500mm by 330mm. (about a foot and a half by about a foot).

At least it will be something to give to Cecil as a reminder of all the years or rockin' he has given us.

I have a copy of it on my computer so after the Easter re-ununions I will post it up for all to see.

Suggestion:  PLEASE CONSIDER.......................

Are there any supporters of the Grove out there who for some unforesaken reason cannot be at the Grove ReUnion this weekend???  If so -

(1)  Will you support the presentation to Cecil???  Remember he gave so much through the years - we all owe him BIG TIME - just dig into your pocket, and contact Andy or Killian who will use the few bob towards the presentation.

2/  If you cannot attend how about (instead of Easter Eggs) getting a set of tickets for your kids - friends whatever, bet you they would LUV you for it..........any more suggestions ???

Will you support the presentation to Cecil???  Remember he gave so much through the years - we all owe him BIG TIME - just dig into your pocket, and contact Andy or Killian who will use the few bob towards the presentation.

There is a paypal button up top for you all now. If you don't have a credit card or paypal account then you can give me (and only me!) money in a brown envelope on Sunday night

Now is this a bit silly of me but isn't posting it here a bit silly unless Killian can ban Cecil user name from seeing this topic

Maybe get a few brown envelopes or Brown paper bags and go around the whole reunion for the collection ??

Sorry Killian, I missed the radio slot, tuned in at 11:30 D'oh.

So what's the deal with the Cecil fund? Will it cover the Montage and then a Cheque for Cecil? Or are we getting him something else to go with the Montage from Floydman?

Sorry if the above is covered in another thread.

Pat and I contributed directly to Floydman. He was last seen getting a visa for the Cayman Islands.

Greetings from the Seychelles...off to New York after this...

No,really-there was no way I was going to stand there on Saturday night with my hand out,or chase anybody for contributions. But it was great when people came up to me and said they wanted to help with the cost-sorry to anyone if this was the only way we met-will have a proper nag next time...

Esthalon...I brought a blank white T shirt with me (this was Irish Mammy's idea) and a marker...you can guess the rest. God only knows what scrawls people left on it.Lots of 'Thanks Cecil' and 'We love you Cecil'.

I gave it to Cecil right at the end and he just looked at me stunned, looked back at the T,back at me then back at the T. Poor man didn't know what to say!

There was bunches of flowers there too for him-who organised that?
