Hi All
I have been searching for old school friends all week and found out about this website from another old "Grover". It made my day! I often wonder where everyone is and what they are up to?
I was a Grover between 77 and 80 (roughly) - though I did go back once when I was 19 in 81, engaged to be married! A fella asked me to dance for the slow set - and knowing what bravery it took for a fella to ask a girl to dance, I got up with him ( I had three brothers who were shattered by refusals too many times so made it a rule never to say "no")...but your man was horrified to discover I was engaged and walked off without a word and left me standing! So much for being "nice" - It was only a dance after all!
Anyway, I am now 24 years married with two grown up kids, 22 and 23, living in Perth, Western Australia. I lecture at a college and have a private practice as a musculoskeletal therapist.
What is anyone else doing?
Carol

There was a topic similar to this one posted by Floydman a few months back. 'Faraways check in here'
I have brought it up again so you can read all about us faraways and the other Faraways that live in the very north of county Dublin
enjoy the site

This is GREAT! Who else is in Perth from the Grove? I found this site 24 hours ago and already found 3! Love it!
Teresa - Perth is one of the worlds best kept secrets. The only thing it doesn't have is the Grove!...but looks like it has the makings of a Grove reunion!

Yes there is Irish Mammy, Freebird and Donal and now yourself. Rolo is heading your way to see some friends from Ireland who moved over there! You all need to meet up and have a little Grove reunion.
I would love to visit Aussie - my niece lives in Melbourne.

Hi Kate
Dont mind Freebird hahahaha. I live around the corner from Donal and I have never seen a snake in the area, plenty of creepy's though, but they are everywhere over here. After a year of therapy I was fine with it .
Are you coming over?

Hi there, just found out about the website from Carol. I was aGrover from 78 til about 81. Lived in Sydney for 14 years, thought I was homesick and came back in 98! Living in 'cosmopolitan Carlagh' now but still a city girl at heart! Having great fun exploring the site and reminiscing about the grove days!

Ok the meat is marinading, the only cake I can bake is in the oven and it is feckin freezin outside. Ran out of oil on Friday evening and this house is over 100 years old i.e. cold! So I'm going outside to do my witch's sunshine dance - give the neighbours something else to talk about!

Sorry Brunswick I'd have to kill you if I told you - witches' spells are protected by a secret covenant! But the sun did shine in the end (nearly the very end!) I lit a fire outside and fed them enough food and alcohol so as not to notice the fine Irish drizzle!

Hi Irish Mammy - I'll give it a go in Sept! You have a good chance cos schools go back then. Guaranteed good weather here when the exams begin and school goes back!! It was up to 29degrees in places here yesterday.

It's been 10 years now and I absolutely hate the cold (perth style) and love the spring and summers here. I think I climatised the moment I stepped off the plane in '97. Been back to Ireland twice since and both times were at Christmas, great for the first couple of days and then I'm a misery guts because of the cold. Although I do miss the open fire, sitting on the highstool with a nice pint of porter

Donal you'll have to try coming back in the Summer. It took me about 3 years of being back in Ireland to venture going for a swim. I actually thought my bones had cracked the first couple of times I tried. Then one day I slipped and fell in. At first I thought my heart would stop but then as the numbness set in it was really nice!! The secret is to get out before hypothermia gets you!!

Can I just say that I think Dublin is WAY too warm at the minute. I have no idea how anyone could survive in Oz or anywhere like that. Once it gets beyond about 15 degrees, I start to melt. Spent a week in Ayia Napa a few years ago with the lads - I just remember the misery of the heat.
I like the cold, the wind and even a light rain above the heat.
And yes, I know I'm odd, but what can I do....

Hi Whippersnapper...I think when you live in a hot country you get used to it after a while. I know our first year in Australia I was out there in the sun worshipping gear when it was 22C..Today it was 25C and I am in boots, jeans and an aran jumper! In my first year in Australia I moved to the desert and summer got up to 56C..yes it was hot..and yes you COULD fry an egg on the ground (we tried it out!)....now I am very comfortable in 40C as long as its not humid. I can cope with cold cos I just put on more clothes...but rain and howling wind...that is what drives me to drink
