Pete, a mate of mine over here got it done and he reckons it was the best thing he ever did. Don't think there was too much pain as he's not the bravest bloke you'll ever meet but the best money he ever spent. Not sure how expensive it was either but as it was done over here that info wouldnt be any good to you unless you're gonna fly over for the op.

Know loads of people over here that had it and no bad comments to be had.  Every one of them said it was the best thing they ever did!

Pete...my brother-in-law had really bad eye sight. He got the laser treatment done and said it's great. It wasn't painfull and they only do one eye at a time. He got it done in the Mater Hospital, don't know how much it cost him, but I can find out.

Pedro,

One mate of mine got it done years ago and tried to do it on the cheap. He got one eye done in Birmingham and hopped on board a Ryanair flight home to avoid the expense of an overnight stay. the pain was so bad he hasn't gone back to get other eye yet.

Over the last few years a good few people I know got it done and said the pain wasn't too bad

Me - I'm also squeemish about my eyes and I've worn glasses for so long I'm comfortable with them. So I'm not tempted I have to say.

But, good luck if you do decide on it

Whipper

I think your story says it all.

A flight after surgery is not a good thing due to the pressure changes- especially with the small cells at the back of the eye and the very dry air on board a plane

I have glasses for distance since I was 18ish. Went to have an eye test the other day and was told that my eyesight is improving!! I was delighted - then he told me this is very common as you 'age' and unfortunately it probably means I'll need glasses to read soon!

I've heard of lots of people who have laser surgery and all say it was easy and the results are great. I've been told it costs roughly €1,000 per eye.

Personally I wouldn't get it done cos it doesn't bother me enough - I only wear my glasses to drive and for tv. Oh and when I want to actually see the world with a degree of clarity (which isn't too often!!)

Ferg got his eyes done a few years ago and said it was the best thing he ever did. He has worn glasses for distance since he was about 15 and they were the reason he had to give up football. He didn't need them to read, only to drive and see anything in the distance.

So he finally relented and had the op (not good at spending money on himself for some reason!) and says he had NO pain at all, the only sensation was as if he were to place his thumb over his eye and push (pressure) while it was being done and the next day his eyes felt uncomfortably dry and that was it.

However, and this is something they dont often tell you, he now has to wear glasses to read!! which he didn't before. He can get those cheap standard lenses from chemists for $5 to solve that but they often dont mention that when you go in for the consult.

His was "lasic surgery" - cost about $4k here for both eyes.

His sister had them done in Ireland and her eyesight was much worse than his. She opted to only have one eye done ..one for distance and one for near vision and apparently they balance out eachother and she doesn't need glasses at all .

Carol  I was listening to a surgeon being interviewed about laser eye surgery last week and he explained that it is only possible to correct the long distance problem not shortsightedness????

I always get confused with this..... if you are short sighted you need glasses for distance? So that's the one they fix i.e. if you need your glasses for distance but not it you need them to read etc...

Ferg told me they can correct either Grainne. I dont know. He was long sighted so that meant he couldn't see in the distance. near sighted means you can't see near apparently. Doesn't make sense to me. So far I dont need glasses but I'd say it wont be too many more years now before I do for reading.

Peter     just heard an ad for Matt Cooper's last word programme "Possible dangers of eye laser surgery!!" It's on 2dayfm

Very hip Grainne - 2dayfm. Saving a whole load of typing versus the more traditional Today FM.

time must be money in the witching business

Oh and Matt Cooper is a prat

LOL Whipper. I actually thought that was how it was spelt but I think that must be in Australia!

Oh and I agree re Matt Cooper!! And not just because he is very biased against homeopathy! But I do like to have the RayDarcy show on in the background in the mornings.

Pete, get a pair of John Lennon lookakike glasses and you're made

Seriously, I'd be scared to have anybody do surgery on my eyes.

But thats only my opinion.

Some people really do look good in glasses. My son looks gorgeous with his on...but maybe I'm a little bit biased.

I have a friend and a couple of work colleagues that had it done, and all of them said it was the best thing they ever did.
I'm a scardey cat so I won't get it done, stick to my contacts or glasses for now.
And to clear it up: Short Sighted means you cant see in the distance,
and Long Sighted means you cant see up close. So BR since you are short sighted you can defintely have it done, but I think they can treat either.
I was reading today, that Colleen McLoughlin, (Wayne Rooney's GF) got it done and she has has constant headaches ever since, and may have to have a second op.
So I guess the best thing is to go for a few consultations and judge for yourself.

I think if I am getting it done I will get it done here possibly the Mater or Blackrock Clinic. Will wait till after Christmas though. A bit of a scardy cat myself!!....

BR  I got it done this year and it's a great job. I got it done in Optilaze in Ely Place. You would be supprised with the amount of people in the waiting room getting tested and having the job done. It takes about 3/4 tests and the surgon has the final say as to wheather or not you are suitable. The operation only takes about 20 minutes. Its well worth it. You will still need reading glasses though. I can now see the golf ball landing, I dont lose so many balls.  Go for it
