I still have most of my old vinyl (apart from the ones that went out as loans but never cames back.) Great to get them out and spin them still. What about everyone else? Still care for the vinyl or moved entirely to digital?

Our boxroom is full on HD's old vinyl records....he got units made especially to hold them all....he will never get rid of any of them, he's got about 400...roughly. He tells the kids that they are their inheritance.

Nice thread Colum...
Was only thinking about this earlier...
Yep-have them all still. Taking the thing from the shelf and sliding the inside sleeve out was like a prequel to listening to it-gazing at the sleeves, lyrics, pictures and credits.
Or sitting on the 42A on the way home from Golden Discs, reading every word on the shiny glossy cardboard.
There might even be something inside the sleeve, like a postcard (Wish You Were Here),or Stickers (Stevie Nicks,Other Side of the Mirror) or even Posters (Dark Side of the Moon). Or the cover 'did' something goofey, like the Schools Out pop-up school desk,or the Sticky Fingers cover with the real zip.
CD's are just not the same that way.Have them all,and will never part...

I gave all of mine to Crusty when I returned back to Dublin last September.
Even a whacko jacko one that wasn't mine. Some were crap but some Floyd in there.
Brought back great memories when I found them in the bottom of my wardrobe. They hadn't been looked at in 7 years!!
My neighbour gave me a couple of hers when she moved recently. Guess it looks like I'm building up a collection here again.
I just need to buy a record player. (are they still called that???)

My mother gave them all away a few years back. Only recently I was in a record shop in Perth and going through all the albums realising I used to have most of them. I'm thinking of starting again. E-bay is quite good for buying vinyl too.

Only ever owned about three (!), and no I didn't bother keeping them. although, given the reluctance of my mother to throw anything out, there is a possibility that she still is in possession of a few
Never had that much cash as a kid, so it tended to be copies on tapes rather than vinyl, and even then it wasn't as if I had what could be termed "collection". Ther were always mates who would go to the bother of copying and playing them. Much easier to chill out in a mates place than my own gaff
Martin, that "foreplay" on the 42A sounds like a particularly saucy episode from a Mills and Boons novel. Sealed by the Sticky fingers comment
"He lovingly caressed the plastic and clutched it to his heaving bosom, eager for the moment when he could unleash it in the privacy of his own home" etc etc

I still have all my vinyl and would never part with it. Last time we changed our stereo I insisted on getting a massive big one with a turntable rather than one of those neat little micro-systems that only play cd's (soulless things that they are).
For me, one of the things I like best about vinyl is the artwork. There is nothing like a great album cover for visual impact. You just don't get that with a cd. I'm a big collector of vinyl by The Mission and all their early artwork for singles, albums and 12"'s was done by a woman called Sandy Ball who drew wonderfully intricate stuff. The album cover for God's Own Medicine is still one of my favourites to this day. Iron Maiden's album covers (featuring Eddie) also spring to mind as brilliant visual pieces. It was an artform in itself.
That aside, there's something wonderfully nostalgic about taking out a well-worn piece of vinyl, caressing that black shiny disc and carefully placing the needle to hear those first scratchy notes. Wonderful...

My prize collection would be my U2 collection I have their vinyl single including an original U2-3 12inch with the sticker removed from it Grrr!!! but I got the autograph of the 4 of them on it so happy days. Other little gem is Ozzy "Crazy Train" David Bowie "The Laughing Gnome"...

Still have my old 33s and 45s.
Mainly 12" and 7" Singles as used to get alot of stuff on tape too.
I also collect 45s at record fairs. Its interesting how much the stuff can set you back. For example, "Killing an Arab", the Cures first single still goes for about Euro 150.
I have lots of Sisters, Nephs, Cult, Cure, Siousie etc on 7".
Nothing like playing them every now and again. And would love to look through Cecil's collection...

Not really the same thing but a friend of mine had a drumkit previously owned by Larry Mullin. He'd also added a few things onto it like a £100 Sabian crash cymbal and few other bits and pieces.
When he was away in the States for the summer in '94, Mammy decided to do a clear-out of the garage.
He came home to discover his kit missing and was greeted with the words ; "Yes, I got some lads to take all that junk away AND they gave me £25 for it...".
To say he was unimpressed would be an understatement.

I was given a really nice turntable from a HIFI freak friend who had upgraded. To change playing speed the table needs to be lifted off and the power band moved by hand to a different wheel then all reassembled. Hence I tend to leave it on 33 and just play albums.

I Still have my LPs and a load of singles although I was never a big purchaser of singles. As regards artwork cds are just too small for the sort of details that can be seen on LPs.
Of course this is more obvious on CD versions of old albums. Nowadays covers are designed for the smaller format, and as a result the impact is not as good. The majority of covers now are photos and text elements for impact.
Am racking my brains for my favorite LP cover, but will have to come back to that.

Apparently the band (according to Led Zeppelin in their own words) hated that cover. I thought it was great.
Colum-you mentioned Rodney Mathews earlier-LOVE his work-(didn't he do Tigers of Pan Tabg,Hawkwind, and a lot of prog covers?
I remember one of his covers was a withered old hag wearing a smiling mask beckonng some children over to buy his wares...what was that album?
I loved all of Hipgnosis' work on the Floyd covers-I used to think they were just being arty for the sake of it,but learned later each cover has a lot to do with the music within,eg,Wish You Were Here was a stab at the music biz executives, making out like they are not human at all, just 'machines' only interested in the money and not the music. (The Record Exec is blissfully unaware he is on fire, making him not really human)
I like Meddle too-again,only on vinyl can you get it by opening the gatefold-the artwork turns out to be a human ear, with ripples (a concentric outward wave, like an 'echo' after the albums key song) just above the ear, intefering,or 'meddling' with the listener. The ear was to represent what was inside the cover was a truly aural experience.
But my favourite album artwork?
Boston-first album.
Had it for ages before I realised it was a guitar!

Has album cover art gone seriously downhill coz of the size of CD's. I'm trying to think of some inspring CD covers but without much success. Certainly with the vinyl a substantial part of the pleasure was in the packaging sometimes. Any CDs get to that level in anyones opinion?

I have about 700 vinyl 45's and 250 vinyl LP's which are stacked in perfect alphabetical order in their own cabinet, designed especially for them.
I have never lent an album to anybody as I never trusted they would have a proper stylus and so most of my vinyl is still in perfect condition.

Whether I will ever part with them or not is a question for the future but it would have to be a mighty offer

Sister, if you're ever in Lisdoonvarna go to The Roadside Tavern pub and check out the chef.
He apparently is totally into The Cure and goes everywhere to see them, he even dresses al la Cure in the pub.

I have about 700 vinyl 45's and 250 vinyl LP's which are stacked in perfect alphabetical order in their own cabinet, designed especially for them.
I have never lent an album to anybody as I never trusted they would have a proper stylus and so most of my vinyl is still in perfect condition.

Most important thing is to keep em to yourself as you say. Your stylus will do as little damage as possible. I keep my balance tuned as low as to stop the needle sliding and keep my records clean. Still love the whole ritual of cleaning and brushing before playing. Ccan't beat it.
Sounds like a great collection, well done for holding onto it all.

HT,
Last year I was distraught when my turntable went. I was Donald Ducked.
Then I went to Maplins and they had the exact belt I wanted and I bought 2 new belts that should last me another 40 years based on the performance of the previous belt, and that will take me to 95 years of age
As for stylus, am gonna replace them more often as Maplins again have a great stock.
Like you I love the whole vinyl LP thing. Cd's and all this new technology doesn't do it for me but I have to resort to this media to get what I want today.

i still buy vinyl, yesterday i bought the black mountain album. Do other members still buy new releases on vinyl or is all nostalgia?
A lot of albums still get released on vinyl, you just have to look a little harder for them.
http://www.myspace.com/blackmountain - http://www.myspace.com/blackmountain
you can listen to a lot of the new album there.
plus a great feature on new vinyl from some labels is that they usually give you the mp3s for a free.

It is a little pricier on vinyly sometimes but didn't know about the free MP3's. Sounds good. Last Vinyl I bought was U2's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (still my only U2 album!!!! Am I really from Dublin???)
Where do you normlly buy your vinyl? Online or in a shop?
Will go check out the band. Haven't heard much from them yet.

i usually buy in shops, as postage costs can be a bit prohibitive for vinyl. I buy a good bit in road records in fade st.
I got both band of horses albums on vinyl there and they came with the mp3s as well. the black mountain album was €19 on vinyl.

Sounds good. Must go check it out. I usually buy online for secondhand vinyl but would like to get some new music too. Kings of Leon I think might be good on vinyl. (Listening to Black Mountain now from your link, sound good!).

yep the kingss of leon are available on vinyl, you will pick them up fairly handy in Dublin. theres definitley not that much choice in second hand vinyl in dublin any more, sometimes its dearer now than the new stuff. Some great rory, zep and lizzy vinyl in borderline, but it can be a littlee pricey. Small amount of second hand still in freebird and road.

I love second-hand record shops and record fairs. Flicking through all that vinyl to discover some long-forgotten treasure. I still get a thrill when I find some little gem I've been trying to hunt down for ages. Can't beat it.
I'm off to London the end of this month. Camden market here I come!

I hear you HT, used to love Sundays down at the Camden markets and then a session in the Worlds End, then of course the trip home on the tube whilst pist. Always an adventure.

Yeah, used to be a big bikies pub, used to go off on a Sunday and had some good live bands in it. Think it's quietened down in the last few years. We probably spent more time in the Elephants Head than any other pub in Camden.

What sort of condition are they in Col? (mixed?, hit and miss? or OK?). Its a long shot, but if you're up there again, and you spot "I want to break free" by Queen by any chance, please pick that one up for me...dont have that single (I discovered) and a guy in town is charging an outrageous €20 for it in a picture cover (around €5 on ebay). Just in case you spot it.
