Was listening to Genesis this morning and then wondered
what Genesis
songs were played down there? Vaguely remember In Too
Deep (hardly
prog,more 80's pop) and think I remeber Follow You,Follow
Me, but
can't think of anything else.
Then wondered how much real progressive rock Cecil
played.
Jethro Tull's Living n the Past and Hawkwind's Silver
Machine
immediately come to mind. I do remember Pink Floyd's
Money (not a
real prog track, and if I'm honest,it's actually most Pink
Floyd fans
least favourite song) and W.Y.W.H.,and of course Focus'
Hocus Pocus.
What other Prog Rock was played?

Never heard Genesis in my time there '72-'75.

Would Argent, Atomic Rooster, Curved Air, Yes, Edgar Winter Group fall into prog rock category?

If so all the above had tracks played in the Grove in my time.

Genesis - "You Have Your Own Special Way" was played regularly when I went there, 80-83.
Pink Floyd -"Fearless" was played now and then.
Yes -"Wonderous Stories".

Heya Martin,

The Floyd tracks that I recall were 'Us and Them', 'Another Brick in the Wall', 'Money' (which you mentioned), 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond' and 'Fearless'.

Yes tracks - 'Wondrous Stories' and 'Owner of a Lonely Heart'.

Genesis (probably my fave band of all time) tracks 'Many too Many', 'I know what I like (in your wardrobe)', 'Carpet Crawlers', 'Mama', 'Ripples', 'Abacab', 'Your own Special Way', 'Turn it on again', 'Follow you, follow me'.

Not sure what other bands fall within the 'prog rock' category - Greg Lake or ELP maybe?  Or Marillion?

That's cool Frank! Have 10 presets now! God,there's like 20 odd
diffeent categories of Rock alone! Loving it.

I don't remember Ripples at a slow set-that would have been just
gorgeous dancing to someone to that. Mind you,I probably would
have insisted on sitting down with eyes closed listening to every
note. Couldn't tell the poor girl to stay quiet during the
dance.... 'So,where are you from?'...'shut up woman,I'm listening
to this...'

The Spirit of Radio by Rush,of course, one of the biggest
progressive rock bands in history (introduced to me by
Brunswicks brother many moons ago) often got an airing down
there too. And you're right Bruns + Robbie-Owner of a
Lonely Heart was a regular-possibly well out of their prog
era too, like many before them. Have a vague memory of
Wondrous Stories too-what a classic.
Yes,ELP were deffo prog giants (wasn't Fanfare...played?)
and Marillion carried the genre into the 80's,having
trouble remembering Kayleigh or Lavender though.

Yep,it would. As would Desert Moon, by Styx singer,Denis
De Young.
Funny,Styx were a big prog rock band in their day,but
because they will be remembered for 'Babe',you don't first
make the connection. Bit like when I first heard 'Owner
of a Lonely Heart'(at the Grove),I never would have
associated long keyboard solos or flowing cloaks with Yes
on the strength of that one song.

I thought prog rock was more psychadelic fusion than hard rock. A guy at school was mad into King Crimson and I had the good fortune to listen to House of the Chrinsom King. Couldn't listen to it now. Yes, ELP and Frank Zappa & Mamas are as heavy as I want to go these days. There were alot of great Bristish bands that also pushed the boundaries - Traffic, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull.

Anyone remember Gong? The Flying Teapot???
Prog rock was probably gened in the 70's,when a lot of psychedelic 60's bands 'grew up'
and stopped playing 'nursery rhymes' (and Pink Floyd were definitely guilty of that) and
they 'found' musical exploration. To this end,a lot of them decided to ditch the
traditional 3-4 minute song format and 'allow' the song to take as long as it needed. The
writers also decided to have a theme connecting all the songs together, telling a story,or
having a variation on one song three or four times throughout the album. Often,a song might
take up an entire side of a record. Thus was born the Concept Album, championed by the prog
bands.
To the hard rocker, the punks or the trendies, prog rock was usually identified by the
keyboards. It became a lead instrument, with keyboard solos, not just airy layers in the
background, along with other instruments such as the moog or mellotron. Songs such as
Roundabout,Cygnas X-1,Suppers Ready,Tubular Bells,Tuesday Afternoon,Stratosfear 95,Shine on
You Crazy Diamond all feature lead keyboard solos.
Another defining attribute to the genre was the album covers. They usually eschewed the
appearance of the band, and often the bands name or album title. And all too often instead
of a photograph,a pastoral art depiction would adorn the sleeve, sometimes referencing the
music inside (all of Pink Floyds covers detail the music in some way). This gave way to
careers of many artists, such as Roger Dean,Boris Valejo,Mark Wilkinson and Rodney Matthews.
(Most self respecting Grovers had at least one poster by one of these on their bedroom
walls!)
Marillion brought the sound into the 80's with Script for a Jesters Tear, when prog rock was
quite unfashionable, but maintained a loyal,if not cult fan base.
Now,or course there is a complete revival, not only with some of these old timers still
touring, but with new bands such as Spock's Beard,Mostly Autumn,The Mars Volta and Tool.
Odd prog connections...
King Crimson Guitarist Robert Fripp is married to Toyah Wilcox,
Johnny Rotten wore his famous 'I hate Pink Floyd' T shirt to divert the fact he actually
liked them!
Peter Sinfield, also of King Crimson, later went on to write songs for Bucks Fizz...
Bob Geldof didn't want to appear in the Wall movie, saying he hated Pink Floyd. He
ironically re-united the band twenty years later for Live 8.
Hawkwinds one time voice was one of hard rocks hellraisers-Motorhead's Lemmy...
Mike Oldields Tubular Bells has a morse code sequence played in it. When decoded,it spells
F--k off RB...a stab at Richard Branson after Oldfield did not re-new his Virgin contract.
ELP had to re-cruit a drummer whose name began with a 'P' after,Karl Palmer left,so
enlisted Cozy Powell to keep the band name authentic.
Buggles duo Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn, after 'Video Killed the Radio Star',were asked to
join Yes and recorded 'Drama' in 1980.
Prog giants Genesis for their Abacab album hire a horn section to play on No Reply at
All,who were from disco chart toppers Earth,Wind and Fire.

Have posted this in the upcoming tours thread but also here for any prog rock fans.

Yes have just announced concert dates at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on 25 November and Dublin's Olympia Theatre on 26 November 2009. Both shows are fully seated.

Yes touring line-up; Original members Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Alan White, who are joined by Oliver Wakeman (son of Rick Wakeman) on keyboards, and Benoit David singing lead vocals.

As a dominant force for more than four decades, Yes has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, stretching the boundaries of progressive art-rock with their dynamic instrumental contrasts and abstract lyrics. Their symphonic use of sound and innovative musical styles continues to make them one of the most successful and long-standing group in rock history and their amazing career continues to defy many of their contemporaries, as they continue to add new, young fans to their following.

Good link Frank, had forgotten about the progarchives site.

hmm Prog Rock at the Grove: Genesis' Carpet Crawlers, Ripples, I Know What I Like.. great slow dances.
I remember Cecil playing ELP's Lucky Man and From The Beginning (the flip side) probably on a few Sunday nights
Hocus Pocus will always be a Grove Classic.

...and here endeth the mystery...
Yes Roundie...I remember bringing an album along to play before the Grove started proper. The
hypnotic tones of A Saucerful of Secrets or Astronomy Domine used to drive the hard rockers nuts!
Pat- I suppose thats not a bad concert price by these days standards, but would probably be nearly
double that if Rick or Jon were playing with them.
Tony and I went last time they played the Point (with the Symphonic Orchestra) and I wasn't
impressed by the set list. OK-they played Roundabout but I really wanted to hear Wondrous Stories.
They had just made Magnification and promoted that album mostly, which is what you do,I suppose, when
you've just recorded something.
Steve Howe did do a really nice acoustic guitar solo though.
