A good while back a gang of us were talking about knacker drinking and St. Anne's and the Field's in Mount Temple by the Dart line! Ah those were the days - getting someone else to get your drink in the off-licence while a whole load of you hid in the laneway around the corner or buying drink with a veeeery dodgy ID in Martin's in Fairview.
Going out in one set of clothes, giving an excuse of going to your mates for the night and then changing in to PVCs, 14 hole docs and transforming!!! Then trying to remember to change back before you went home!

We would go into the flowin tide and drink our vodka and lime!!!! house cleaner.... or other times it was down the park after robbing the gin or whiskey from home - we would pass around the bottle trying hard to drink it straight... only to end up on the stage pucking it all back up again..... uhhh to think of it now almost makes me sick.

A good convent girl is what I am.....went to Dominican Convent Cabra.
We lived off the Navan Road and travelled on two buses on a Sat and Sun
night to get to the grove and then a taxi back home ....see how much we
loved the grove!!!....but we always stopped in the Flowing Tide to
quench our thirst on our long long journey. We must of stood on each
others toes in "the Nep" cos you could never move in the place....

Twas downstairs in the same building as The Flowing Tide.
The one across the road was The Plough and the one on Marlborough Street / Sackville Place corner , kinda backing onto the Flow was called the High Tide.Don't know if there's atill a boozer there now and if there is, what it's called.

Bluebell, I love The Foggy Dew and have been in there a couple of times recently. I love the way they blast the music and the fact that it is actually decent music not like the rubbish they give you in most bars these days.
Peter, I suggest ignoring Smiths and starting in Gaffney's instead, a much better pub.
Then, the Nep, The Foggy Dew , Doyles and Bruxelles where the music is still excellent.
I like the sound of that plan. What happens if we all hate each other next week ?

My God. The "Fanta Orange" thread title brought some
memories back !
My first (and last for a decade) time to drink vodka
was when I raided a drinking cabinet in my parents
house in Clontarf (before heading up to my friends
in Dunluce Park and hence on to Grove).
I remember I had done it the week before and used
Coca Cola and on this occasion all I could find was
Fanta and (yik!) Lilt as a mixer.
It was an interesting experiment. Coke and Fanta don't
mix. It's something like oil & water. I believe the
correct term is a "colloidal suspension" is produced . I think an "Irish flag" has the same
sickening properties and instead of getting a neat
mixture which hides the taste I got a quick hit of
oily fanta followed by the full whack of the neat
lukewarm Smirnoff. Needless to say my stomach was
reching for half the night.
When I say I didn't touch vodka for a decade that
is true. I got some lovely Stolichnoya (sp?) given
to me by some friends who had returned from Moscow
a few years later and the ice chilled vodka neat was
a totally different kettle of fish. Very nice, very
Russian. As for Fanta (or Lilt) I've never touched
the poison since. Pure muck, IMHO. If its fizzy
orange ... mines a Club !!!

I've a very poor recollection of the cost of
things way back then.
I did find this interesting page on the cost
of pint of Guinness over the decades and the
fact that it overshot the inflation figures
Sorry.. a bit academic but ....
http://anthonykelly.com/inflation.htm
Maybe Coca Cola prices followed similar beverage
trends... i.e up, up and away ...

Also - didn't we get money back if we returned
the empty bottles ?

Was it not the High Tide that the shooting took place? Such a rare occurance back then. How things have changed! What about the Raheny Inn and the famous drug bust. About thirty arrests for possesion and god knows how many under age. Then they had the witch hunt for months after. The Inn had been my local at the time but I missed the raid as we decided to head into the Neptune that night. Pure luck!

Hey Welcome myploscarfe! ( I had one too!) When was the shooting? (isn't the High Tide at the back of the Flowing Tide?) I did hear about the big bust in the Inn at the time though.. I remember my only sojurn to Hijacks - there were some heads in Pizzaland which was upstairs form Hijacks telling everyone not to go down - turned out there was a bust going on there too! The High Tide was at the back of the Flowing Tide in Sackville Place. I think thats the name of the small street that runs from Marlbrough St to O'Connell St down the side of Clerys. The shooting must have taken place 80-81. It was a big deal back then.

The Nep gone possibly??
Guess it was always a bit of a firetrap...bet the health and safety guys finally closed it....
I think I only ever drank upstairs a couple of times in all the years we went there....
Used to be good when the performers would pop in from the Abbey Theatre across the road after shows....
Remember this Barrell House Blues Piano guy played upstairs in the Flowing Tide for the whole week of his run..was brilliant..tho he was hoarse by the end of the week...
Was always a good pub for star spotting....

Yeah, CP, I think it was there, is it finished now? A city center venue would be better for me anyhow; how about anyone else who couldn't make it, did you find it too hard to get to the Shieling?
------------- Remember when you were young?
|
Posted By: Bluebell
Date Posted: 13-November-2006 at 17:13
Yeah....the Shieling is not good for us either...it cost us 45 euro in
a taxi to get there and 55 euro in a taxi to get back home, cos my
friends and I live over near Blanchardstown.....but there was 8 of us
going so we split the difference, but if it was only me and HD then it
would of been an expencive night.....probably cheaper to book into the
hotel ...
If the reunions were held in a venue in town, we could get a night-link
home afterwards.....but anyway it was worth the taxi fare cos it was a
brilliant night.

Hi Bruns, why did they change the name of marathons anyway. I still call them that

Hi Lesley,
I'm not sure but I think they were known as "Snickers" in Europe or something like that and they wanted to standardise the name. Same sorta thing with Opal Fruits/Starburst. That's what I heard anyway!

There's loads of items that had one name in Ireland and Uk and another in continental Europe. Such as Oil of Ulay now Oil of Olay, marathon /snicker, "Monsieur Propre"(francofone countries) became Mister proper etc... Sometimes it had to do with who owned which trade mark where. In the case as regards cider, Showerings own the trade marks "Bulmers" and "Magners" in Ireland but do not own the Mark "Bulmers" in the UK hence the reason They launched Irish cider in UK as "Magners".

Magners is a new name to use in the UK and nor'ern Ireland.
Believe it or not it was a Magner from Clonmel who teamed up with a Mr Bulmer from the England to produce cider under the name of Bulmers in both Isles. The trade mark in Ireland sold to Showerings and ....

Finno, My mam gets sh*tty with the sales staff when they correct her saying Oil of Olay and not Ulay. She tells them she's still giving them the money so shut up
(funny it's not the same money now either - now its euros)

Good Morning
They are trying to stop people/journalists from using "google " as a verb as this weakens their trade mark
. Its like if Hoover were to try and register their trade mark now , it would not be accepted because nowadays (as least in Ireland) people say they nave to hoover or that room needs hoovering whether or not the use a "Hoover" or an "electrlux" or "Nilfisk".
Jesus, I wonder if I could claim overtime for this?
I deal with IP (Patents, trade Marks etc).

Just another *bump* to an old thread.
From what the Original Poster started - what drink did you have (if any? ) before heading down. I remember myself and Colin Eyre getting drunk down the park (on the playing pitches just behind St Pauls) with a six pack of stag bottles between us. Then we discovered the 2 litres of cider from Bulmers. Werent they something like £3 for a 2 litre plastic bottle. Knack drinking at its finest!

We had to be able to afford the 10 ciggies and admission as well Lesley. Not to mention possibly a bag of chips (or two?) on the way home!

Couldn't afford chips all the time,Mel-the odd chickenballs now and again though.
Myself and a certain 'Tom Bixby' ( ! ) would have a flagon alright in St. Annes beforehand. When the likes of Steiger,Red Stripe and Bavaroa beer (Ugh!) came along we moved from Cider to lager. Used to buy sometimes from Super Valuy (then H Williams?) in Raheny village, and later when we knew we could be served, from the R.O.L. with that alsation which used to be on guard in there.
As I think I mentioned on this thread earlier (can't believe it was two years ago...) Derek 'invented' a concoction from your mums cabinet-wine,vodka,spirits,anything that would fill a clear bottle. When he held it up to the light it would refelct a red colour, then at another angle it would reflect green. He actually called it the' Red and Green',and would often ask me on a Saturday afternoon am I 'Red and Greening tonight?'
Mention it to him - should raise a nostalgic smile!

He probably didnt get the full effect of those concoctions Martin since those spirit bottles were a bit watered down from my experiments in spirit-mixing in the early 80s...If only our ma knew the uses we were putting to her sodastream bottles...

HA! Wasn't Sodastream an 80's institution???
And yes-it was n fact a sodastream bottle he used.
Gas...it was a case of knocking back whatever you could on the way down and get through the doors before it could take effect...

My brother once tried to fizz up some wine.... It went everywhere walls ceiling, curtain clothes
and all over him and his friend. It was so funny- lucky that I came just as the wine started to drip from the ceiling

Sodastream is alive and well and living in K-Mart in Perth.
Bought two last year (special offer giving 2 gas bottles) It was cheaper to buy the two sodastreams than buy a couple of extra gas refills.
I think I'm turning into your wan from the good life!!!! We make our own wine, beer, bread, sodastream mixers, yoghurt. Think I have all the important things covered
