Hiya gang!

Somebody posted recently about how quiet the site has been of late and I agree with that sentiment.

I just did a quick check of the posts on the site over the last week and there's pretty much no posts in the actual Grove topics apart from the Grove Reunions section.

I know we're all mates at this stage and we've probably run out of topics/threads to discuss re the Grove but if I was a newbie coming on board now, I'd probably make my appearance brief as the Grove doesnt seem to be discussed anymore on the site.

I dont have a problem chatting in the other threads and I enjoy contributing to the various 'fun-stuff' topics as well but I think we should also try to keep the 'Grove' topics alive and well.

It might help to attract some new members, with their own memories.

Just my two cents....what do ye think?

Agree, Mel...It would be an awful shame to see the site come to a stop.

I know I've been 'offline' a while myself but I've made a real effort to get back now and it's actually noticable i.e. the volume of traffic/lack of, since I last was a regular poster.

 let's keep the flag flying

Reading what you've said Mel.

The site is called The Grove Social Club and as such is a place for people to socialise.

There are two elements to the site, Grove topics and non-Grove topics.

Yes, the non-Grove topics are getting most of the posts at the moment but as a social site I guess that's natural as there is a lot of non-Grove activity that people are concerned about or that folks just want some fun in the Fun Topic or chat in the Private Room.

In the Grove element of the site there are many threads that anybody, even a newbie, can contribute to. I think those of us who've been around the site a while have probably expressed at lot of our feelings already re our Grove experiences.

It's hard to generate new topics without covering old ground and that's where I would hope any newbie should find some interest as each of us have our own memories etc.. from the Grove.

I mentioned this before that there are over 750 members on the site but if you look at the posts count there's loads with zero posts.

The dilemna is that if the longterm members clear off then you face the site not functioning at all. On the other hand we face the same problem if we depend on newbies to keep the site going as the majority of them are not posting and I don't think that's down to a dominant presence of us longtime members.

It may be a matter that we've said and covered alot of what people felt themselves and maybe new members don't want to be seen to be repeating themes.

Don't forget we were all newbies at one stage and if you don't just get involved then it's up to others to keep the ball rolling.

When I came on here first I hadn't a clue what to say but then I thought of some topics that interested me and started new threads and then I saw other threads that also interested me and so I added to those.

There's nothing to stop any newcomer doing the same.

I did suggest at some stage that a little welcome message be generated to each new member welcoming them and inviting them to contribute freely to any thread they may have an interest in.

But it's the horse to water scenario. When you get on the site and see some topic that interests you, be you new or a longterm member, then add to that thread. That's the only way it'll keep going.

I also think the lack of Grove re-unions is a problem because it's preventing newcomers from meeting other Grove members and seeing that we're all just a bunch of rockers regardless of age etc...

Just my view

Pat

Hopefully we'll see some new members after the next reunion.  Saw the nice 'Summer Reunion' poster in the window of Radio City!  Looks good!

Just another point on this.

Just because a member doesn't post, it does not mean they're not enjoying the site.

I've met people who've said they have registered but would rather look and read.

Let the site rock on

I think one of the reason for newbies not hangin' around is the possibilities that they don't even know the other threads exist.

I just clicked The show Topics from" button and it came up by default as "Show Topics from the last month"......I realize this can be reset but if they don't search the forum like we do (Cause we know the vast amount of threads that exist)

Do they?

BF,

This was mentioned before. Perhaps the settings should default to 6 months for everybody or at least to new members so, as you rightly say, they'll see a bigger range of topics.

Would like Killian's views on this.

Mel,

If you look at any thread and look at replies vs views you will see that there's a lot of views compared to replies which suggests a lot of people are viewing the post but not adding to them.

So that's good and indicated we have quite a lot of visitors to the site

I'd just like to see more of our old Grove friends (from different eras) contributing to the site, Pat.  I just want to hear more Grove stories......

Pat is right about the lurkers (like meself).

I registered 3 years ago but have only managed a miserable 100 posts since then. Before that I lurked for a year or more as a guest. But I love the site and check in all the time. I'm sure there are more like me.  And all Forums go through quiet times so no need for worrying.

The Welcome Note for Newbies is a good idea, I know I appreciated the PM from Pat when I joined up, a friendly and welcoming gesture

Fester - lurk away. We did the same at the Grove, didn't we????

Pat your comment on "When I came on here first I hadn't a clue what to say"  glad that afliction went away

As for repeating ourselves. I do it all the time

I'll give my opinion on any topic so feel free to add new topics to "non grove" stuff for newbies.
