I had my first broken heart at the Grove. Great memories of it though. I'll always think fondly of that stupid eejit who did it by cheating on me, but great songs played that night.

I was a very unthinking self obsessed person in my Grove days

and now regret how I treated one of my girlfriends back in the

Mountprospect days. The reason I started posting on this site was

to apologise as you really don't know what hurt is until it happens

to you.

I remember dancing with a girl for a whole slow set one night and even walking out to the corridor to buy her a coke afterwards.  When we were in the corridor, I told her I was heading (briefly) to meet my mates down in the alcove but I didnt return and I felt awful.  Later on, I headed up to the stage at around 5 minutes to 1 and I saw her (upset) on the stage.  I didnt know where to look, and just felt like crawling into a hole but I just scarpered.  Terrible experience. Apologies to the person in question if they post on here.  I know we were kids back then but I'm ashamed that I behaved that way.  Karma bit me in the ass later though when a girl I was with "went to the toilet" and I waited until 1am for her to return, only to see her leaving, arm in arm, with some other chap.  Cest la vie.

cripes Irish Mammy... 'The first time'??? Hope there wan't many more...AND you had it mended...
Mel's right-we were kids and 'went with it' sometimes and probably didn't know who we were hurting. i always thought Grove girls were so cool, all long hair, indain skirts and sandlas. I set my sights WAY to high on my third or fourth Grove night and saw someone I really fixated on and started drawing her name on my school copies.
One week when I asked her to dance she said yes. I (mistakenly) thought this was a done deal, that the next day we'd bewalking down St. Annes park and maybe go steady.
I see now she was someone who just never said no to a dance invitaion, never wanting to turn someone down. When I saw her the next week with someone at a slow set with much longer hair than me,a much cooler jacket (that stuff mattered!) I was gutted.
The other side of this topic I remember from the Grove was that there always seemed to be mates who brought you through these broken heated moments. Happy days... (they were really!)

Oh I had my 1st heart break at the grove.  I was mad about this guy and he was drunk one night and broke it off.  He still wanted me to go to his debs so I went and we had a fantastic night and he asked me back out.  I was to meet him the next night in the grove but he never showed up and when I was leaving he was waiting for me outside.  He called me over to say sorry for not going but I was so pissed off i just said "no worries" and walked off..... I blew I it as he started going out with someone else for a long time after that.  However we did meet years later and I ended up with him, again as he was walking away he said "do you want to go out again" and I said  "No".............. don't ask why as I really liked him.  I again met him years later and he told me I broke his heart......................... Disapprove

Something you said Martin struck a chord with me.  I was obsessed with a girl at the Grove (let's call her Mary) when I first went down and I used to ask her up and just say thanks after 1 song.  I reckon I asked her up about 5 or 6 times over the course of a few months.  I was pretty quiet (still am) when I went to the Grove initially and I just presumed that she was being nice and didnt refuse when asked to dance.  I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had been a bit braver in those days but life moves on.  I dont think I ever actually saw "Mary" with any other chap in the Grove - she must have known that I was pretty mad about her and probably wondered why I didnt make any "moves" at all.  Maybe we were just too innocent!?  Bittersweet memories.

I envy the kids today. Boys and girls hang out with each other and can be real friends without all the messing around. We had the odd girl hang out with the gang and the odd lucky guy could hang out with a group of girls but it was not common.
Personally I was far to shy to talk to a girl even when in mixed company. I was brave enough to ask girls up to dance and even ask them to stay up for a few if I felt a tight hug, but the dance was spent in silence. If I got extra brave I'd ask them if I could leave them home and even that walk was without any form of conversation. If I got even braver I'd make the move for a kiss and ask them out, to go on a walk or something. That's where I would turn into a bollix, because I seldom turned up. I'd panic before the day arrived  and make up an excuse to myself. We did not have a phone, I seldom called and just left them standing. The more beautiful a girl was the more I panicked. Then my wife came along and I never had to do the talking. From the first day to now she hasn't shut the F-up. I know now that I must have come across as a total ass and hurt  people but I had no control over it. If only we had texting back then my life would have been a lot easier.

Today I'm one of the nicest, generous  and most considerate men in the world.Approve

I met a lovely Girl at the Pauls Grove and I fell in love with her after a few dates.
She was younger than me but I loved beingn with her, especially the walks in St Anne’s Park.
On one particular walk I found the neck of a broken bottle of Cidona just beside the Red Stables.
I slipped in on a small twig and as a sort of love symbol for us
...
I said “It will take years and years for that twig to grow and eventually the bottle neck will break or the twig will grow around it,
But we parted (long story and very teary) and it broke me up for a while..
Years later I happened to be in Clontarf Castle and I was standing at the Bar when a Woman approached me and asked me straight out” Did you ever go out with (C.D).I was startled and thought for a moment and then said Yes I did.. “Why do you ask...She told me that C was sitting behind me at the window and she recognised me when I came in and said see that guy I went out him years ago. I just though I asked you because I’m curious.......
She paid for her drink left and went back to the group of friends.
I’ll have to say I was afraid to turn around but felt that her friends were staring.at me......My mind was racing and I didn’t know what to do.

I then thought about finishing my pint and high tailing it, but decided I needed the gent’s first. When I came out of the gent’s..there she was,(C )just standing in the hallway and her gorgeous eyes still sparkling as they use to.
Talk about being shy and nervous and not knowing what to do or say............................................
Part of me wanted to hold her and hug her...But I was going out with someone at the time and it would have being wrong ( well I thought so at the time)...............
I was lost for words and we exchanged greetings, and then just stared at one another for a brief moment and then parted...............

Occasionly when I was down the park I would pay a visit to the tree where I had put the neck of the bottle on.The twig had grown considerably around the bottle neck, and you could just about make it out and eventually,I guess it’s part of the tree at this stage.

I was in love with a girl who lived on my road. She had a little cocker spaniel with big sad eyes. I thought it looked sick one day so I stole it and took it to a veterinary truck that parked on Collins Avenue every Friday. It was a government thing and free for the poor people of Donnycarney. I told the vet the dog had distemper and he put it down. Then I made a bracelet from its collar for my girlfriend. Shorttly after she told me her mother wasn’t feeling the best and the only thing that would cure her was some chicken soup. I had a racing pigeon called Deatach to make soup from but didn’t want to kill it in case my girlfriend might dump me for this really nice looking kid that lived up the street. I think her mother died and she broke it off with me. I only got kisses and nothing else so it wasn't such a big deal.
