I was never a Zappa fan, and other than his album art would not remember anything about him or one tune he played on his 50+ albums.  My 1960's and 70's buddies were all into him but at the time I was a devout bluesey folkie. (right Derek?)
I'm still not a fan of his music but stumbled over some of his interviews posted on YouTube. Every word that comes out of this man's mouth makes sense. He was a true prophet and gifted speaker for a person claiming to be uneducated and didn't read because it made him sleepy.

Never really got into Zappa at all.

The problem for me was that there was so much good music going on at the time it was impossible to buy records for every artist.

But I know from reading musical articles that Zappa was very influential and produced some good music.
May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

I have heard different reports on Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet)
On the David Letterman he claimed to have never spent so much as one day in school and Frank Zappa said they went to the same High School
