My apologies to all pre-74's, and everyone in the 80s, but when I think back to those dark piles o f sweaters, jackets, and gloves, piled high on each side of the gym, I have this inescapable memory of the 'make-out slow sets'. The slow sets were not the highlight for me, but it was indeed a lasting memory. Gabriel & Co's delivery of that timeless classic pretty much sums it up; and I'm sure that when Cecil popped that 45 on the turntable, he probably smirked to himself "Here's to fostering young love". Winter; frost-bite, condensation streaming down the frozen windows, and in between the lip-locks, enough time to mumble 'you gotta get in to get out....'. The Grove wasn't just a club; it was a foundation of so many people's lives, including mine.

Have to agree with The Carpet Crawlers ('77 - 79), also 10CC's I'm Not In Love made for very memorable slow sets! Big boys don't cry...

Carpet Crawlers and Us & Them were still played in mid 80's (much to my delight) and what about Mr Young - the Needle and the Damage done was one of my favourites - I was always trying to play the opening bit on my guitar, Heart of Gold was another regular - can't actually thing of any 80's slow songs that were played, but maybe I've just blocked them out of my memory...Save a prayer or don't say a prayer or whatever that Duran song is may have been played?

Hi TM,
I can't actually remember Carpet Crawlers being played in the '81-'84 timeframe. I only heard that track for the first time recently much to my shame!! It's a super piece of music. I remember around early 80s I was in Portugal on hols and who walked into a restaurant with wife & child other than Mike Rutherford of Genesis. I was dumbstruck. I didn't have the courage and probably never would to approach someone famous like that when they are on hols in a private setting. Speaking of Grove song memories.. is it something hallucinatory or did I once here "Hippy Hippy Shake" (the Beatles version not the Swinging Blue Jeans original) played at the Grove ? If it wasn't there it was at a St Pauls social dance night. |

Hi Ian - Hippy hippy shake doesn't ring a bell with me Grove wise - it's gas the way you can picture a song being played at the Grove. I am 99.9% sure that the last song I heard played at the Grove (I don't think I went again after early '86) was Michael Jackson!! The song was "Beat It" which was ironic - it probably got in cos of the Eddie van Halen contribution. I remember it clearly - we were outside unlocking our bikes (in those days we could cycle home drunk on autopilot!) and we heard it being played. We shook our heads sadly and cycled off...into the next stage of our lives - whew that's quite heavy! btw First song I heard was the Stones "Start me Up" - we walked into the corridor in total awe and thus began "the Grove years" |

to Mel I heard recently that Wacko appeared at a specially arranged private after-hours visit to the Hughes & Hughes bookshop somewhere on the South-Soide. It appears he is staking out Ireland as a possible place to live. Perhaps he and CdeB (the other Grove bete noir) are in cahoots. I wonder how that strange juxtaposition of Wacko and Eddie VanH ever came about in the first place. |

nostalgic just like the rest of us Mel.....really can't wait now, it's
always a great night cos you know every song that Cecil and Crusty
plays...even if it's a song ya don't like
.....the
only problem is that ya never want to go to the loo just in case they
play one of your favourite songs...can remember at the last christmas
reunion been in the loo when they played "Freebird" but everyone
just sang along while they did what they had to do !!!!!!......it was
great.

I've heard a version of the Carpet Crawlers by a John Ford, who I think was with the Strawbs. Interesting, but not a patch on Genesis though!
