Heard the author discussing this with Pat Kenny this morning. Thought that there are a number of people here with connections to Guinness'.... some more than others

The Goodness of Guinness by Tony Corcoran

First illustrated social history of the St James's Gate Brewery, including in-depth discussion of the major contribution made by the Guinness company to the welfare of its staff and the wider community.

Introduction by Finbarr Flood, a former director of Guinness.

”There is no other company, industry or premises more closely aligned – indeed almost synonymous – with its home town than Guinness’s St James’s Gate brewery and Dublin city. From the company’s modest beginnings in 1759 to its heyday in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and its continued strength into the twentiy-first century, Guinness has had an enormous influence over the city’s economic, social and cultural life. In this extensive illustrated study, Tony Corcoran examines the magnitude of the brewery’s operation, and the working lives of the thousands of Dublin people who depended on Guinness for their livelihood, either directly or indirectly.”

Finno.....Guinness's has been a big part of my family. My grandad worked there as a blacksmith and my dad and 2 uncle's also worked there. My dad worked in the power house, he was a fitter/welder there. I grew up going to the doctor and dentist in James's Gate and the swimming pool too............Great memories.

Interesting stuff Finno.

I believe it's a good book - knew Tony vaguely to see before he left. Even met the bould Finbarr a few times (and he never corrected anyone when they game him about five promotions with an incorrect job title )

Years ago, my mam came into the kitchen and suddenly stopped with a clutch to her throat (bit dramatic in our family )

How did you get home so fast?
I've been here all afternoon.

repeat for a while. You may guess where this story is going......

She had seen "me" two minutes beforehand miles away.

Thought me mother was going prematurely senile until two sundays later I was at mass in St Johns and I saw the chap myself. Very very spooky seeing someone who not alone fools your mother, but also fools you. The absolute spit of me.

It was like an out of body experience - he even had the biker jacket and jeans and a PLO scarf. Mad.

Guinness has been a part of my life since my first pint of it with Tonto in the Palace bar c.1985...

Guinness was such an employer-not just in the brewing, but the brewery had painters, plumbers and electricians employed directly for them. I knew a painter who worked at Guinness. He would paint the factory from top to bottom, and when he finished,he would start all over again.

There are three kinds of people in the world, those who are able to count, and those who can't...

LOL!  (Remember the Simpsons episode when they are having a big staff meeting in the Nuclear Power Plant about staff with alcohol problems and a hand goes up in the crowd "I'm drunk right now!". (made me laugh anyway).

It'll be nearly 4 years since I've had a decent Guinness and boy am I looking forward to it. One of the best pints I've ever had was in Hayes pub in Puckane, Tipperary, where Tracy is from. Will be heading down there the day after we land in Dublin. My mouth is watering as I type this.

I am allergic to Guinness, ( I found out when I was about 20)  Went away for a weekend and was covered in a rash by the end of the first night.    No "pulling power"!!!!  that weekend.   I now only use it in Porter Cakes -
