Hiya gang,

Its interesting that nobody ever mentions the New Romantic or electronic music played in the 80s, even though a lot of it was played in the Grove.  Personally, I kinda like some of the stuff like Kraftwerk, Human League, Depeche Mode, New Order.  I prefer the Rock stuff but I think that some of the other tracks had their moments.

That was my era Mel and I loved it. Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads and all that stuff. I was a big fan of electronic music before I got into the darker goth stuff. Gary Numan was a big influence on me. Also loved Blondie ('Atomic' was the first single I ever bought), Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants, Visage, Ultravox, Propaganda and suchlike. Wasn't a huge fan of Human League - maybe cos they were my sister's 'band'. Initiallly, when first attending the Grove I used to think they didn't play enough of that stuff but I soon acquired a taste for the rock favourites and found myself getting into bands such as Pink Floyd and the like which broadened my horizons. Never a bad thing!

Cool!  Thats the thing that struck me about the Grove when I went down, Jen.  I always considered myself as a cross between a hippy and a rocker but when I went down, despite initial misgivings, I started dancing around to Police, the Cure, Duran Duran and loads more.  I didnt enjoy, or dance to, everything that was played but, like you say, my tastes broadened at the Grove!

Well, we have Cecil to thank for that. Opening our ears to music we probably wouldn't normally have listened to had we all stayed in our cosy little niches.

Tt took me a while for me to get used to New Order but now I associate them with the Grove, when I hear any of their music. (not a fan, sorry Jen)
But I agree, Cecil has a lot to do with our taste in music. But who can we blame for the clothes

I have to say I loved the clothes, I wish I could still wear my tight jeans. It's gas they are back in fashion. My niece is loving it as she has inherited all my old jeans that I was keeping  just in case they ever fit again. I gave her my last 2 pairs the other week. Time to accept reality!  

I think that's why the Halloween Grove is my favourite as it's an excuse to get out the combat jacket again.

Interesting thread. I agree with a lot said already - yes Cecil was mostly responsible for our musical education, something priceless in my view. That extended sometimes to various genres and generally a song or two from each era survived on to the next generation. New Order and Depeche Mode survived to mine and probably beyond.
