Quite a fan myself although I have no memory of any songs being played at the Grove. Not quite sure how we would have danced to them! Not headbanging stuff by any means, but not really arm waving, bounce up and down music either. Telephone line and Don't Walk Away would have been great slowies though. They have a fantastic family tree, starting with the Moody Blues,After Denny Laine left they moved members around and called themselves, well, 'The Move',they split up and Woody started playing Jimi Hendrix riffs on his cello to Jeff Lynne who said that has got to be a band sound and the rest is histroy. Since Jeff Lynne left to pursue his producing talents (and Travelling Wilbury's!) they became ELO pt II,not quite the same but the tunes are still there. Diary of Horace Wimp is one of my favourites. |

ELO is a guilty pleasure of mine which I picked up from my parents. Their songs always remind me of my childhood and evoke good memories. Try listening to 'Mr Blue Sky' and NOT feeling happy. It's impossible! I've seen ELO feature in a couple of TV shows/movies in recent years. The new version of The Magic Roundabout had 'Mr Blue Sky' in it which is a great way to introduce some new young fans. They also featured in an episode of Doctor Who (Gods and Monsters) where they played "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Mr Blue Sky". Good to see a great band still getting exposure. Jen

Talk about introductions to songs. My favourite has to be the start of "Young American" by David Bowie The sax is just fantastic.

Must check that out Pat - actually havent put on an ELO album for a bit (just a few of the singles). Have a copy of the "Electric Light Orchestra" (with the lightbulb on the cover) from 1971 - not really what I was expecting (having already picked up A New World Record and Out of the Blue in the early 1980s - different, but not bad).

To me "A New World Record" was their pinacle. It's actually spinning on my turntable now. This was a band who had Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan from The Move in their original starting line up. The Move for me were one of the great 60's bands producing some great songs. And ELO had earlier albums. One called "Eldorado" which I'm going to follow up on. Their earlier stuff, i.e 1972 - 1975 is classic. Edited by Biker Pat |

Ah, cheers lads, am glad to hear that Cecil played 'em - just couldnt remember. My personal faves are Turn to Stone, Mr Blue Sky, Sweet talkin' woman and Wild West hero (Pat, I think we discussed this before on some other thread but I agree with you that "A New World Record" is the business but I also think that "Out of this World" (their double album) is also well worth checking out. |

Mel - I have a clear recollection of Mr. Blue Sky being played. I too have a soft spot for ELO with 5 tracks on my Top 300 ipod playlist - Blue Sky, Livin Thing, Evil Woman, Telephone Line, Can't Get It Out Of My Head. Time for all secret ELO fans to come out of the closet! |

I'm sure T has a pair for every occasion. As for ELO "Mr Blue Sky" was one of their great songs that I remember. I have an album/LP at home somewhere. I must dig out and give it a spin.
