I was just wondering what fond memories of certain songs that were out in the Grove era evryone has. If I went through my music collection from that time it almost has a diary effect where all I have to do is hear a certain song and there is a story of what was going on in my life at that time behind it. Could scribe volumes as a result. I was just surfing la net this week looking up on the 70's music when I came across a site of the "worst songs of the 70's" and "Je TiAime . . . Moi Non Plus" Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg came in second place. I have a very good friend who use to always host parties where 99.9% of the guests were of a female variety, all models, actresses, air hostess, airheads etc ... One time he got a new answering phone and phoned me up to phone him back and leave a message on the said anwersing machine. In practice that sounds fair enough but in theory I have a dread of speaking into intercoms, making public announcements/speaches or leaving messages of my vocal chords on such devices as I was a child born of the pre-answering-machine era. He called out to my house one time and as he was driving homeward bound down my road I just thought that this would be the perfect time to indeed leave a message on his said device. I went in and looked through my record collection, found "Je TiAime . . . Moi Non Plus" and thought this would be the perfect song to leave as a mesage! So I dragged the phone as far as I could down the hall, pulled the speakers of my stereo out so that they were almost caressing the phone handlle, and set up the stereo to start playing on the part of the heavy breathing section. My mother (accomplice in crime de jour) was recruited from the kitchen and was given a briefing of which button to press as soon as I signaled out to her as soon as it was time to leave the message on the answerring machine. "Operation heavy Breathing" swung into effect and as far as we knew was a rip roaring success. All day I was looking forward to recieving a delighted phone call from my friend to say what a laugh he had got from the said message. At ten o'clock dot com later that night the phone rang and I merrily nearly killed myself running down la hall to answer it. It indeed was my friend. I excitedly asked if he had recieved that said message to which he replied and I quote "Did I get the message? Not only did I get the message but a friend of mine who I had brought home got it too, loud and clear!" He had met a friend of his en route home and played the message (first message ever! Probably delighted thinking he would impress her!). He said that he had the volume on high and the next thing he was greeted with obsene (his words----I at this stage was falling around laughing on the other end of the floor and nearly had to be picked up as I thought this was more hilarious than I had ever hoped for!) message!!!! He turned mortified to this lady friend whom he was trying to impress and she asked him what kind of "people" did he hang around with and if they were "perverts"!!!!!! Still on the floor in uncontrolable laughter I confessed that was the first time that I had even been put in the same league as "perverts"!!!!! But then there is always a first for everything is'nt there "people"? It took him years to see the funny side but at least now, almost two decades later he can smile about it!

Ann did "Someone put the cake out in the rain" come first.  What a song or the lack there of!  on the other hand I remember walking into the room at home and my older sisters/brothers would be listening to "Je TiAime"  and I would wonder what all that heavy breathing was about! Did not take me long to learn.  I always liked that song though.  I enjoyed reading your bit on it - that would be hilarious - l would love to do that to someone...

Gosh! everyone must have a story to Je t'aime..in my case a group of friends were up in my house recovering from the excesses of Saturday night at The Grove and preparing themselves for the long night ahead, when my Father poked his head around the sitting room door to say "hello" just as "herself" was rising to a climatic crescendo in Je T'aime, you can only imagine the earth crashing silence that decended on the room, my Father completely nonplussed and innocently said "yis, made an awful mess of taping that song from the radio, I mean someone was holding the mike far too close to their mouth..??!! howls of convulsed laughter ensued, the poor man He still to this day doesn't know what he said wrong...

(for the very young reading this: a tape recorder was a largish rectangular machine with about 5 press down buttons and had a microphone attached to the back which was switched on to record things..very unsophisticated by todays standards!!).

Dunno, can anyone remember the comic version of this song that came out just after the origional, think it emerged that it was supposed to be two people climbing over a wall, I do remember the line just after a lot of heavy breathing that went "there! I told you it was better with your socks off"??!!

Tape recorders with the mic and the 5 push down buttons.

I remember recording the top 20 on BBC when Alan Freeman (Fluff) used to do it. Also I'd record albums on my pals record player. We'd all sit around and be perfectly quiet as the record recorded. If somebody coughed or sneezed you had to start that track again.

May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Don't think the younger generation de la jour would have the patience to use a tape recorder and for the results to please them as they are too high tech and spoilt with technology now. Did anyone ever listen to Radio Luxenburg? I use to go to bed with my little banger of a transistor radio next to me on my pillow with the covers over my head listening to that! Also loved the "Old Grey Whistle ....think that was on BBC2".....

Hey Ann,

I also loved the " Old Grey " as we used to call it.

There's a few DVDs released by BBC with some of the best performances from the show. The first one is by far the best, from memory think it has Lynyrd Skynyrd,Bob Marley,U2,Talking Heads and many more.

I'll have a look later and confirm some of the others.

12 and 9 in response to your question last week.

Rolo.

[QUOTE=Ann Whelan]

Yo Ann,

Like you I had a little transistor and listened to Radio Lumembourg.

I remember Kid Jensen. And three in a row on the baby Bob show. Bob who, I can't remember.

Also we used to stand beside an ESB pole to get better reception.

And "The Old Grey Whistle Test". Brill.

I recorded the last one on New Years Eve in 1987. Still have the video wher Bob went back through old recordings. Was pissed off when it ended with "Bat out of Hell" instead of "Freebird".

May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.
