Hello everyone,

Warning: VERY LENGTHY Post Follows

As some of you will know, I posted a list of my collection of 7" singles (back in August of last year), that I recall, from my Grove "era" (primarily between the years 1980 and 1986, more or less).

Following on from the posting of this list, I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of, and to try to purchase if possible, the "outstanding" 7" singles that I don't have from that era. It has taken me a while to compile (with the help of friends both on here, and elsewhere) this "outstanding" list but after a few false dawns, I eventually completed a list of what I felt I was missing from my collection from the Grove 1980-1986 playlists. Thanks to all of ye (especially IanL) who have jogged the memory banks and added to the expanded list. A few singles outside of the 1980-1986 years have also made their way to the list but in the main, these are all songs I heard (or think I heard) down in the Grove during my time there.

Now, thanks to online music stores, e-bay and the many second-hand record stores in Dublin, plus a few generous donations from Grovers (thanks Rolo!!) and non-Grovers alike, I have finally collected all of these outstanding 7" singles and my record collection, I feel, now much more accurately reflects the songs I remember (or think I remember) from the Grove 1980-1986(ish) years. A few of the songs may not *definitely* have been played down there but most, if not all, were. Also, I know that a few on the list weren't played until after 1986 (but since I cant recall exactly when I stopped going down the Grove, they have also been left in).

There were/are a few songs on my outstanding list that I couldn?t get because, as far as I know, they are NOT available on 7" vinyl. Those songs are, the ones I can think of anyway:

"Bullfrog Blues" and "Messing with the Kid" by Rory Gallagher, "Jonathan" by Barclay James Harvest and "Turn me on" by the Tubes.

Which brings me nicely on to the point of this lengthy post. Notwithstanding the four songs listed above, I am quite sure that there are some 7" singles (hopefully, not hundreds or so!!??) that I have forgotten to add to my list but at this stage, I have drawn a blank. If you went to the Grove, roughly between the years 1980 to 1986, and you can remember a song that was played down there but I havent listed, could you please reply to this post or simply PM me!?

Anyway, here is my revised collection of 7" singles in alphabetical order. I would be very grateful if you would please take a look:

Edit: Photo of record 'boxes' below!  For info, they were made from Photocopier paper boxes coated with wood-effect "contact" paper from the wallpaper shop(thanks for the tip about the contact paper, Roundy!).

Edit 2: Collection added to (via E-Bay) with suggested records.  Thanks for all the suggestions.  4/1/2008.  Bruns.

Edit 3: Collection added to.  "I want to break free" by Queen and "Whiskey in the Jar" by Thin Lizzy.  25/3/2008.

Edit 4: Added "The Lovecats" by the Cure to the list.  Cheers Chris!

19/9/2009.

Edit 5: Added "Whatever You Want" by Status Quo.  Cant believe I forgot that one. 26/11/2009.

Edit 6: I was incorrect when I said that "Fearless" by Pink Floyd is not available on 7" single since I know, for a fact, that Cecil has a copy of it in his collection (I saw it in his 'wooden boxes' on the night we did one of the webcasts!).  (April 2010)

Edit 7: Finally obtained "Fearless" by Pink Floyd, on E-bay, in a picture sleeve, no less (it's the B side of "One of These Days").   Also picked up a copy of "What you're proposing" by Status Quo, 1980, which I think was played at the Grove, but I cant recall (June 2011).

Edit 8: For some reason I was thinking about this list last week and I realised to my horror that I had forgotten two Grove regular songs from David Bowie ("Life on Mars" and "Rebel Rebel") - the pic sleeve versions of both singles has now been added to the collection, thanks to e-bay - I dont know where I'd be without it. (12 March 2012).

Wow thats some list.
Are these the ones you have or does it include some that are missing ?
If it includes the missing perhaps if you could edit the post to highlight or indicate the ones that you are still searching for.

Wow, even just reading the list of your collection makes me feel nostalgic. However, I DID notice there were a few missing that you haven't got. Feel free to correct me if you reckon I'm wrong but if my memory serves me well here's a few more:

Phil Collins: You Can't Hurry Love

The Cure: Just Like Heaven

Heaven 17: Temptation

Siouxsie and the Banshees: Arabian Knights

The Smiths: How Soon is Now?

The Mission: Wasteland

Sisters of Mercy: Temple of Love, This Corrosion

Talking Heads: And She Was

Thanks for the comments folks.

Finno, just to clarify - all of the records listed above are now in the collection - the wish list is, thankfully, complete.

Jen, thanks for the extra suggestions (I suspect that some of them are post 1986 releases so they havent been included but I will check the years for them).

That's some list, Mel. Seems very comprehensive too. All that could possibly be missing there are the 'once offs' but you've even covered some of those!

You've  got The Grove in a box....mmm...we could always have it in your front room the next time we're stuck for a venue!

Glad you got to the end of the list,Mel-(although isn't the chase often better than the kill?)...I know you've been working on that collection for years.

Impressive list...now-care to list all the B-sides???

(Only joking!)

My time in the Grove proceeded yours. Theres a lot of these weren't played in my time. In fact I remember a Saturday night when Cecil tried to play "Mary of the Fourth Form" the Boomtown Rats and there were ructions

Thats a brilliant list, a labour of love if ever there was one, thanks for sharing.  Would it fit on an iPod???!!

I went from 83 to 87 fairly religiously and the only Alan Parsons song I recall from that time was "Eye in the Sky" ... was "our song" for me and my first real girlfriend and was played most weeks during that time.  Ah, the memories! Wonder where she is now ....

I could have played for Ireland (if it wasn't for the booze and the birds)

Great List, brings back a lot of memories, it would make a good playlist on the ipod, may have to look at doing that.

Loved Big Log Fester...a true laid back tune, sitting in a circle, clapping to the slow beat, soooo laid back it almost falls over.

Big Self rang a bell as soon as I read your post but cannot remember a song. Anyone else?

Was it a Grove tune?

Uh oh, rumbled...  Think I'll stick to the 1980-1986 songs in the main though!

Edit: Thanks for the suggestions June, Rolo and Fester!

Good one there.Stardust...was it a Grove song?

I liked their 'Big in Japan' as well, which definitely was NOT a Grove song...
