you smith's heads still as fascinated with him as much as i remain?As

I think I read somewhere or saw somthing on tv that Morrissey has put himself forward to represent England is this years Eurovision ??????
I hope I've got it wrong cos it would just ruin him and the memory of his good songs (even though all his song were depressing )

yes,sadly its true,but its typical of Moz,tongue in cheek.Honestly cant
understand why people find his stuff depressing,it exhilerates me,always
has and always will.Plus,i can really identify with the idea of setting your
sights really low,dont expect much and you wont be dissapointed.I think
that was the amazing thing about The Grove,we knew at the time,that this
period of our lives was most probably its zenith and true to my
expectations,it was all downhill from there.Endure the rest.

I was a mega fan of The Smiths - I used to rob daffodils and put them in my back pocket and think I was the dogs B - Morrissey in the Eurovision - Ah pass on that one - His old stuff is the best - I dont like any of his new stuff - And I must say that the majority of his songs are very depressing - even as a fan !

Morrissey is a one off. Loved The Smiths and his Solo Career has been pretty good too overall, apart from a bit dodgy in the mid 90s. I'm talking Southpaw Grammer, Malajusted. You are the Quarry (or You ate the Curry as Moz quips) was a great return to form. Ringleader not so good. What I like about Mozzer is his sharp wit. Never got to see the Smiths in their heyday, but have seen him live four times. Also saw johnny marr play with Tim Finn at Witness a few years back - they did 'There is a light...' Brill. I always associate 'What difference does it Make ?' with the Grove.

Huh? ..Since when did you become a Smiths fan hun?..hehehe!! The grief I get everytime I play them has to be seen to be believed..*L*

I agree that I have never found their stuff depressing..think maybe you have to come from that place (the angst ridden depressed place) to truly get their stuff..hehehe!!

As regards Morrissey...well..I've never really liked his solo stuff..right from Suedehead on... he is like McCartney without Lennon... just no edge without Johnny Marr and his stuff just seems to sound ever more samey...stopped paying any attention to him years and years ago. Singing in the Eurovision just confirms it for me..

IMO The Smiths were one of the greatest bands ever to come out of the UK...along with The Beatles and Radiohead...:-)...But I think they were a band of the times..they just summed up that whole gloomy 80's era to me :-)

The melancholy singer-songwriter surprised the music industry when he expressed an interest in writing the song the UK would perform at the competition in Helsinki, Finland.

It seems he has now thought better of following in the footsteps of Bucks Fizz and Daz Sampson because the BBC has confirmed he is no longer due to take part.

A spokeswoman for the corporation said: “Obviously a lot of artists express interest in Eurovision and we express interest in a lot of artists. We approach quite a few of them but on this occasion it just did not work out.

“We can confirm he will not be taking part.”

The Mancunian singer revealed he was interested in writing for the contest after seeing Daz Sampson’s song Teenage Life come 19th out of 24 last year.

The star, who went solo in 1987 when The Smiths split, said: “I was horrified but not surprised to see the UK fail. Why didn’t they ask me?”

 His comments were taken as a joke by everyone but the BBC, which then approached him about writing this year’s entry.

A BBC spokeswoman said at the time that the corporation had been in discussion with him, as well as other artists, and that he might write the song for someone else to perform.

Morrissey is noted for being a fan of the contest and was linked with it before when he worked with the UK’s first winner, Sandie Shaw, in the 1980s.

His video for You Have Killed Me last year was seen by many as an affectionate homage to the style of the contest during the 1970s.

He would have had to win the public’s approval in the qualifying stages of the competition to make it to Helsinki, which will host the event won by Finnish hard rock group Lordi last year.

Former Blue singer Antony Costa and glamour model Jordan have both lost out at this stage in previous years.
