I just got back from seeing "Sweeney Todd". If you don't like the sight of blood or the idea of Johnny Depp singing (yes, really!) this one's not for you.

However, if you like Tim Burton films, tales of darkness, revenge and bloody violence then go see it. Depp gives a stand-out performance as the unjustly transported barber who returns to London hell-bent on extracting bloody justice. Helena Bonham-Carter is brilliant (and funny) as the pie-making Mrs Lovett who has always carried a torch for him. Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron-Cohen also feature in this film. As I said, it's a dark and disturbing film (and a musical, but don't let that put you off, Depp actually has a great singing voice) but very enjoyable.

Thanks for the review Jen.....am in two minds about going to see this movie, love Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman and I like musical's, but don't like tells of darkness and blood in movies.......so guess I'm stuck in the middle somewhere.

I'm interested in the film but find the whole Burton version of 'dark' always seems just a bit too comic book, almost disney.  I'd like to have seen Kubrick do something like it.  All of Tim Burton's stuff has a kind of theme park horror vibe that kind of turns me off it.

Whereas I love it. Quirky but disturbingly so. Takes all sorts, I guess.

Absolutely Jen,

I don't dislike his stuff.  I like what he is about, just a small reservation.

Speaking of which, I just noticed something...

Exhibit A: Dave Vanian of The Damned

Exhibit B: Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd

Notice a similiarity? Burton could have hired Vanian for the part and saved himself a bundle.

Well of course Dave looks a lot different these days. Just all the time I was watching the film I had this niggling thought that I'd seen that hair somewhere before.

Jen,

thanks for the run down on Sweeney Todd,   Love Burton's stuff- Especially the animated ones - Corpse Bride and Nightmare before Christmas now if I can only persuade the other half to go with me.

I thought it was very good.  Not a Joy Division fan or anything but it is well made (and I suppose i am a bit of a fan now having seen it).

I´ve just watched "In The Valley Of Elah" starring Tommy Lee Jones. He plays a father, trying to find out what has happened to his son, who has been AWOL since returning from active service in Irak.
This is a slow moving, but engrossing film and I really enjoyed it. Tommy Lee Jones performance was probably the best of his career.

Watched a movie the other night called "Trade" new in Block Buster!!! Well disturbing would not be the right word!!! It is about human trade between Mexico and the US! Absolutely disgusting to even think this goes on...... I can't help looking at my boys and wanting to do all in my power to protect them!!!

The awareness is important but the movie is so disturbing! Here I am days later still feeling sick inside!!!!

Ok I don't know where to post this one !!... This review has a title

Almost better than the Real Thing or Nearly Better than the Real thing

U2-3D
Well this movie had no story and has no plot and I wonder is U2 just cashing in and ripping fans off again with a concert movie from a tour that ended two years ago. The movie is taken from U2 Vertigo tour and U2 have released 2 concert DVD already from this tour so why another one ?
I went got my 3D glasses and wasn't expecting much from it. WOW some of the footage was fab. The 3d effect did work, sometimes you tink you were right beside Bono on stage to footage from the crowd, you be watching the band and then all of a sudden someone pops up on someone shoulders on the screen and you think they are really in front of you and love them to get down :-) There was one part water was sprayed on the crowd near the begining and you expect to get wet. The best song of the show was "Love and Peace or Else" teh 3d in this song was fab, The camera was behind Larry Mullens who was on the B stage in the middle of the audiance looking back at Bono who was on the main stage and it was wow I thought I was back in Croker.
The only qualms I had was the audio wasn't great for the vocals or bass but that could be down to the cinema, also U2 could have waited till their next tour and done this and gave us fresh footage from a newer tour, and also the cinema hiked up the prices for U2-3D to pay for their new Digital Projectors... If you are a U2 fan you enjoy it.. If not a fan go and see it for teh 3d... Can't wait for proper 3D movies...

4.5out of 5 Stars
