UPDATE:
A huge thanks to everyone for your support and we're pleased to announce a second date - for those who missed the chance to get tickets for the Saturday. We're holding it on the Friday, August 25th, the preceding day. Tickets are now on sale from http://https://secure.tickets.ie/Listing/EventInformation/35263/" rel="nofollow - www.tickets.ie

Tickets for The Grove 50th Anniversary Reunion, happening at St. Paul's College, Raheny on Saturday, August 26th, 2017 at 21:30, go on sale Thursday May 25th at 9:00, 3 months in advance of the event itself. Tickets will be available from http://www.tickets.ie" rel="nofollow - www.tickets.ie and are limited to 460 tickets.
To put it in perspective, we sold twice that many tickets for the 40th reunions in The Sheiling Hotel 10 years ago. This reunion is the "big 50" and it's happening in St. Paul's, so I'm guessing that it will sell out pretty quickly. Once it's sold out, there's nothing Cecil or myself or anyone else can do. Don't expect any guestlist from Cecil, he's specifically asked not to get involved with that, he doesn't want the headache. Tickets will be €25. The price is more expensive than we'd hoped, but so were the expenses of running this one-off event. Remember, 9am (tomorrow) Thursday, May 25th.

I'm not even supposed to be here today!

I only saw the sign the other day for the Grove reunion and am so disappointed Cry the tickets are sold out for Saturday.  I'm nervous about going on the Friday night in case the numbers there are so low it will ruin the memories I have of the Grove!!

Do you think that there will be a good crowd on Friday? Sick

The only thing lacking in the Grove over the 50 years was a decent dance. Can you imagine how exciting it would have been to ask a girl up and getting moving like this...I blame CECIL:Smile

Good stuff lads. Thumbs Up  I thought there'd be a deluge of new members coming on to this site but I guess they're all Facebooking nowadays. Cry  Terrible shame - as there used to be a fantastic buzz on here.  We're still here anyway!

I reckon one thing the St. Pauls reunion will do (and I said this to Cecil last week when I bumped into him on the Dart) is that there'll be a high demand for tickets to future reunions (particularly the one in November) - there were a good few at St. Pauls, who had never been to a reunion before, and I think they caught the buzz and can't wait for the next one.

We shall see!

Lol Joey. For some reason my memory of the place is that it was painted blue on the outside, or there was a lot of blue involved...

...but my memory not very reliable much of the time, so maybe its playing tricks on me. Must ask the bro in England, he'll remember ...

When I first attended The Grove you entered through a small door at the front (opposite to side shown in the photo). At the cloakroom, near the boys jax. Then later the entrance was moved to the near corner on the driveway side where you entered through the snack bar. It was kinda annoying because all of these Hells Angels characters in leather jackets used to park their bikes near the door and then they robbed all the good looking girls that needed a ride home.  There was one in biker in particular that I remember well...his name was Pat Mc Cool something or other.

When the Grove started, I was 5 years old.  It was 11/12 years later, before I started going down to St. Pauls.  I do remember when I started going to St. Pauls as a student (the school, not the Grove itself)from around 13 years of age, everyone would be talking about the Grove and could not wait to be let go/get in.

Everyone in the Old Grove had a spot and rarely ventured far from it. The guys up at Cecil's end probably never laid eyes on the girls at the other end. If you ever ventured out of your area people looked at you funny and thought you were up to something. Kids at the back of the Grove were allowed come up to our end at the stage if they wanted to ask Cecil for a special request or something but it wasn't encouraged Stern Smile At the end of the night we let them get their coats from the cloakroom but that was about it.

That actually rings a bell Poguey! There were safe zones, mixed zones, no mans' lands, and areas where it was best not be found in by the regular denizens - the dirty underbelly of the Grove !!!

Yep, in St. Pauls - we hung out down the back and/or in the alcove.  Rarely, if ever, ventured up towards the stage - would head to the stage via the corridor (less crowded for starters).  Once I ventured up near the stage and asked a girl to dance, and we stayed together for the slow-set and I thought I was in, even though she was into disco apparently.  She said she was heading to the jacks at the end of the slow set and fecked off with some other bloke.  I reckon I wasn't, erm, "experienced" enough for the girl.  Lucky escape I suspect - I can't remember the girls name but my mates, for some reason, called her Daisy - I have no idea why to this day.

Lol, only joking lol, I had as many rejections, dumpings etc, in and through the Grove as any lad could reasonably expect in a lifetime!!! But I also met some fabulous girls that I will remember when I'm a very old man ...

Great memories all the same ...

HAY! that was not me who was rejected, it was the V Junkie. I have enough rejection of my own to take credit for. My best rejection ever was asking a girl up to dance and she looked out the window and said " eh...has hell frozen over again?"  Not really --I was never rejected...ever...cross my heart.Sleepy
I probably posted this on here before; The best rejection I ever heard was when my friend Bubbles White asked a girl to dance in the old Flamingo Club (Cecil's Wednesday night establishment in O'Connelll Street) and her reply was " NO -I'm sweating like a pig". She kinda looked like one too, in my humble opinion, but Bubbles wasn't fast enough to get that out.

Yep - was me with the "Daisy" rejection alright.  Speaking of rejections - Chris Rooney, from on here, used to have some good ones - "Are ya dancing?".  "Yeah".  "Great, can I have your seat".

I still chat with him from time to time on "Messenger" on Facebook but he seems to have gone almost totally Radio Silent on the FB public forums, including the Grove main page and Grove radio page (and on here).  In fairness, a lot of the old crew have stopped posting here unfortunately.  Next time, I chat to him, I'll encourage him to get back on here and share some "jokes"...Lovely bloke, but he hasn't been at the last 2 reunions.  Last one he attended was, I think, the 50th bash in St. Pauls.

Lads - is that not the Chris R who regularly post pics of his new album purchases on FB - and the occasional "joke"? No?

I always tried to avoid dance rejections by:

a) asking girls who were standing up, ergo verifiably smaller in height that me; and
b) girls who were (as well as above) less good-looking than me!

I still got a few rejections mind you

I think the reaction to, and the removal of, his joke, Gerry, is what annoyed him, especially when others (women) sometimes post semi-naked pics of hunky lads on FB on that page and nobody gets offended.

Couldn't agree more Mel - a lot of pious hypocritical bullsh*t on FB - one of the reasons I really don't like it, or any social medium (although I do check into the Grove FB site, but I'm very careful what I say - most of the time!). Anyway, hopefully Chris pitches up here, he will be an asset to our little gang I have no doubt ... C'mon Chris
