The Grove Show is 7 years old today! First show aired was Pat and Muller on August 3, 2012. I posted a couple of pictures on FB to recognise Peter and Lynne who started it all off. Its great to still have it going, thanks to all our listeners and guests over the years.

Nice one Brian.

Wow, seven years ago.

However it was Leslie from Oz and I who did the first show. Leslie was over on holiday and she was amazing.

Myself and Muller did the second show with a Woodstock theme.

Great credit to everybody involved for keeping the show going πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸŽΆπŸŽΆπŸŽ€πŸŽ€πŸŽΈπŸŽΈπŸŽΈβœŒβœŒβœŒ

Well done Brian, an anniversary well worthy of acknowledgment. I know I'm a little late to the party, but I really enjoy the shows and arrange my Friday's, insofar as its at all possible, so that the 9.30-11.30 show slot is free for me to listen in...

Here's to the next 7 years, and more ...πŸŽ‰πŸ€˜πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Pat you are right ok course. Your show with Brian got aired live on August 3 2012 and the one with Lesley was broadcast a week later on August 10. But Lesleys one was recorded first while she was home so is really the first one alhough aired second. I actually listened back to both shows recently and excellent stuff. Of course in those days the show was 1.5 hours before Near FM gave the go ahead to be a permanent fixture. Myself and Jen were guests on August 17 and I almost didnt make it. My Dad died on August 14 and his funeral was on August 16. I only realised on August 17 that it was that night. I spoke toy family and they all said I should go ahead which I am glad I did in the end. The grove was very special to me (as it was to us all) and the show was originally down for 5 dates so I didnt know if I would get the opportunity again. Over the years I listened in almost every show and was delighted when Lynne and Jen asked Sean and I to come on board. Heres to the next 7 years please god.

Gerry thanks as always for the continued support. We couldnt do it without you guys. Its been great to be part of it and get to know you all. Pat I was very grateful the night at one of the reunions that you introduced me to all the crew. What a great bunch of people.

The ome thing about the show is that I have continuedy musical education that Cecil originally gave us all and learned alot about different styles and genres through all the various playlists. I had to pinch myself the first time I led the show when Cecil was on last year. After all the songs he played for us it was a great feeling to be part of helping to air his playlist and also to get to know him a bit more. I would say Cecil was one of the biggest influences in my life apart from my direct family. He said to me that the music was already in us all and he was just drawing it out. Thats very modest of him but there was alot more to it than that in my view!

Brian,

You're right re the sequence of the first shows.

I forgot Lesleys was recorded and played later.

So Muller and I have the honour of being the first 'live' act of the show.

Now I understand how Quo felt when they opened the LIVE AID concert.

Seriously, it was an honour and privilege to be the first act. We had great fun and Peter and Lynne were super and supportive that night.

Very well said Sister1 above..brings a tear to my eye.

It’s unprecedented for any club from the 60s to have its very own radio show and especially with the original DJ and members as guests to relive those precious times.  The radio show, reunions, forum (around 15 years old now?) and Facebook are testament to how Cecil and the Grove affected us all. There must be millions…I mean –at least 5 members posting on the forum nowSmile).

Thanks to the founders, organizers and members of the above for continued good times – sniffle

G'wan Pogue, ya bollix - I detect a little sniffle of nostalgia in there ...

Actually, I would always have claimed to have no interest in the past etc - what's happened one second ago can't be reclaimed etc...but dammit, getting involved with the Grove stuff has - on occasion - brought me back in time to years ago - there is a certain amount to be said for it I have to say - reminds me a small bit of what it was like to have hair, a working mickey, no halitosis etc ... Godammit Pogue, look what you've started now ...

Nostalgia? Did I mention that in two years I'll be married to the same Grover for 50 years?
Sheezy!-Why didn't I go to the Flamingo that night?

Or as Benny Hill used to say -"25 years ago I almost killed her, almost killed her...sniff...The thing is I'd be getting out now".

Lol Poguey . But 48 years now, that's some great achievement Pogue. I notched up 35 years in June this year. We're gluttons for punishment!

You know the other variation on the Benny Hill joke: Married for 35 years? Sure you'd get less for murder ...

You can have an album which plays longer or a single which is shorter.

Fully agree, and fully agree Pat! Two quotes that always apply:

"beauty is in the eye of the beholder" ; and also " music is any combination of sounds that pleases the ear".

So, whatever you like, is great; whatever you don't like, isn't; but the other guy could have the opposite view, and he's right too...

Lads, in case anyone is interested available tonight, I am guesting on the radio show tonight (1 November) along with Mark Gray. There's a tiny doubt about Mark as he has to make various work arrangements which might/might not allow him to travel down tonight, but I will def be there. There is a focus on "mod" music tonight, about half the songs will be mod songs, the other half will be good old Grove classics, plus a few you may not have heard in a while.

Most of the mod songs are songs you already know and love anyway - some absolute classics in there. So, if you're around and in the humour for some good sounds - get the beer in (or the wine, or the cocktails for Pat ) ...

Nice one Joey, and an .. Eh ... Original name!

Anyway, if anyone managed to catch the show live, or if you get to listen to the playback, you will notice a distinct lack of guest presenters! A nasty combination of really bad luck came together yesterday and prevented both Mark and myself, for different reasons, from getting to the show:

- Mark had last-minute problems getting time off work and, despite his entreaties, was forced to turn in, leaving him without time to travel down for the show
- Undeterred by this!, I was ready to rock and roll, when: mid-afternoon (and this is to cut a loooong story short) my daughter, who is staying with us for a few days following an operation on Wednesday just gone, suddenly became violently ill. Only myself around, Annette was gone for the day doing other things. Rang the hospital (Tullamore) and their instruction was get her back in quick - she'd only been discharged on Thursday. Between driving there, a&e, triage, etc., etc, it was close to 10.00 last night when I was leaving the hospital in Tullamore. Daughter kept in, more tests this morning. We are meant to be going to a show tonight I can see that getting blown away as well.
Anyway, the combination of these events meant poor oul Jen and Lynne had to do the show with no-one to talk about the songs, stuff about mod and mod bands etc. Just a really unfortunate turn of events but there you go, no-one died but I'm really disappointed things worked out the way they did.
Right so, onwards/upwards, the reunion gig next stop ...

Cheers Pat, thanks for the kind words.

I'm sure Rebecca will be fine, I suspect (as do some if the nurses) that it's just a bad reaction to all the anaesthetic, morphine etc she was given. But can't take chances with these things obviously, hopefully she get the all clear and home today.

Yep I'm sure the two girls did their usual excellent job. I could have caught second half of the show, but couldn't bring myself to listen to it! I'll catch it on playback.

And yeah both Jen and Lynne said me and Mark arrange another show whenever we like ...

Just a shame the way it happened - one of us is bad luck, two looks like carelessness! Oh well I suppose such is life. No doubt we will return to the show at a suitable time in the future as you say, and thanks for giving that opportunity.

Ok, next stop the reunion, looking forward to if more than ever now, and will see you there for sure. Cheers, Gerry.

Speaking of short skirts: on a dare once I turned up for an event in Manhattan wearing a kilt. It was kinda hard getting a taxi from the hotel I have to admit. I thought they might be more open-minded in NY but they all sped past.

Lol Pogue, actually a brilliant song, I love Leo Sayer

Joey thanks for the kind words, she still in hospital, but starting to see light that has an "end of tunnel" feel to it ( as opposed to the old "approaching train" feel)!!

Thank you very much Frank, for those kind thoughts and words.

I think things are now going in the right direction and hopefully by the end of week she will be ready and able to go home, with the episode firmly behind her.

It's great to have all the kind thoughts and wishes directed my way, and Rebecca's. I am passing on all the good wishes to her and she is very appreciative.

Thanks again.

Lads, Rebecca was finally discharged this evening in good form and good shape. She will spend the next 10 days or so while we're away, with family in Swords, to help with recuperation etc.

Thanks so much once again for your kind and thoughtful good wishes.

And Bex asked me especially to send her love and a big "thanks" to all on here for your kind words and thoughts

Now for the ocean ..!!'

Well lads, the ocean has released me, I'm home. Itinerary was:
Miami, Jamaica mon, Georgetown (Caymans), Cozumel (Mexico), Nassau (Bahamas), back to Miami with an extra day spent in Miami, and home - landed yesterday. Had an absolute ball, we especially liked Caymans and Bahamas. It was kinda raining when we were in Jamaica and Mexico, so that probably didn't help our impression of those places.

My favourite spot: to my own surprise it was Miami. Loved the place. Other points of note:

- America is as wildly expensive as ever and the tourists are clearly regarded as low-hanging fruit, ripe for raping of every cent - but then again, we have Temple Bar for the same purposes;
- We tried jerk chicken while in Jamaica, felt we had to. My advice - don't, just don't!
- I've been in the States several times and I really do like the place and its people ( despite Trump, etc etc). However, I am done with 10-hour flights anywhere at this stage in my career, so this was probably our valedictory tour!

And while I'm at it, can I once more give a heartfelt thanks to you all for the very kind and heartfelt messages of support for Bex when she was ill there. She is recuperating fast and well on the way back to her normal ebullient self. Thanks again for your kindness, it won't be forgotten

Thanks Gerry. You've given the update I was asking for in another post.

Wow, you covered a lot of ground.

How long were each stopover?

Miami was always a great place. Visited there, well Miami Beach, a lit in my airline days. On my last visit to USA in 2017 I also found it expensive but worth the visit.

Did you open an offshore account in the Caymans? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Lol Pat, I couldn't possibly say if I opened an offshore account as it might tend to incriminate me - but I didn't !

In general we had from about half an hour after the ship docked in each place. around 9.00 a.m. on average - to around 4.30 or 5.00 pm. A max of seven or so hours. Due to the logistics of getting up, having breakfast etc, and getting back to the boat in good time - there was probably a window of 4 to 5 hours in each place. The boat sails at the appointed time whether everyone is back or not; apparently about 6 people missed the boat leaving the Bahamas - it had a departure time of 4.00 which was earlier then the other places, so maybe people were caught out. Dunno what happened next, or whether that story is even true, but the boat does supply a phone number to ring if you get left behind ...!!!

It was raining quite heavily in both Jamaica (Ocho Rios) and Mexico (Cozumel), and in reality, other than having a few beers and bite to eat, there's not much else to do if it rains and it's a bit miserable wandering around a place you don't know in the rain. The sellers and lucky-lucky heads in Jamaica were very pushy, almost aggressive as well, which didn't help and was very off-putting. Cozumel seemed to be a kinda shanty town with a lovely beach, but in the rain the beach ain't much use....so those two place didn't impress, maybe their charms just weren't evident when we were there.

The beach in Georgetown was beautiful, one of the lads had a quick swim - report was water was really warm and very salty! A place I would happily visit again. Ditto re Nassau in the Bahamas, lovely spot, we took a private taxi ride round the place with an informed local man with excellent English and great knowledge of the place. Again, a place I would visit again anytime. The weather in both the above places was lovely, which of course helped immensely.

When we left the ship at 8.30 on Saturday morning we had the full day, overnight, and most of Sunday morning and afternoon in Miami before flight home so good bit of time to explore. We stayed in a hotel in the South Beach section (the Gates hotel), which was a lively, affluent, Latin-American vibe place. We didn't go to the beach itself but ate well, drank well, saw Ocean Drive, Lincoln Theatre etc. Took the trolley up and down Collins Ave ( yeah, really), did an open-ttop bus and boat tour combined (sailing past the "Homes of the rich and famous"), Fisher Island, Star Island, etc, etc. Made the most of our slightly extended time there, and I would seriously consider a week or so in Miami alone. But, but, but ... The long flight time was a serious pain in the butt, the back, and everywhere else for us! Maybe we're getting ould, but I can't see myself in reality going that distance again. But never say never, and the overall outcome was that we had a really marvellous time.

I haven't even touched on the ship, suffice to say iit was what you would expect (in a good way I mean!)

Thus endeth the trip report ...

Thanks Gerry. Very informative.

My sister lived off Collins Avenue in Miami Beach.

Just as we lived off Collins Avenue, Celtic Park Avenue in Dublin.

Visited there many times using my airline concessions.

That's interesting Joey, bout rain in Mexico ... and dodginess. I suppose it's not always sunny and full of shiny happy people in these far-off places. I be grand to rock n' roll next week for sure! Maybe moaned too much bout the flight times, just found it boring and confining sitting on a plane for that long. Did many's the longish-haul to the states back in the day and don't remember being bothered, so it's probably just an older age/crankiness thing .
