There was a very nice song called "Brandy" by a band called Looking Glass that was out in 1972.

I think Manilow took that and changed it to "Mandy".

The original "Brandy" may well have been played in the Grove but I can't remember.

Or people could be thinking of "I'm Mandy, fly me" by 10cc? I don't ever remember Barry Manilow being played in my time, but that was early days (71-75) ...

Looking at your dates there Pat, almost identical to mine. We must have been in Belgrove on the same nights many times, but our paths just didn't cross in there. Amazing really ...

For sure Gerry.

Gang of us on motorbikes hung out on The Beachcomber on Sat nights and The Barony in Fairview before driving up to the Grove.

We usually hung out near the womens jacks or near the other end of the hall to Cecil.

We would have drank in the park first mainly (I don't think the term knacker drinking had even been invented yet!), then from prob later in 1972 onwards it would have been a mix of The Inn or the Green Dolphin some nights, the park other nights, depending on the humour.

We would have hung out largely down the back, but sometimes up the front or even on the stage beside Cecil, although that was rare enough...we tended to roam a bit as well ...

Yes, Cecil actually did play ‚Mandy‘ - and it did indeed „stand out“ from the rest of the slow sets in 1978 / 1979 😃

Interesting facts:
  • Scott English wrote the lyrics and recorded this song in 1971 as "Brandy." His version was a hit in the UK. In the US, this was changed to "Mandy" to avoid confusion with the Looking Glass hit " https://www.songfacts.com/facts/looking-glass/brandy-youre-a-fine-girl" rel="nofollow - Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) ."

Among the other songs English co-wrote was 1968's " https://www.songfacts.com/facts/the-american-breed/bend-me-shape-me" rel="nofollow - Bend Me, Shape Me ," a #5 hit for The American Breed in the US and #3 hit for Amen Corner in the UK. He also co-penned " https://www.songfacts.com/facts/jeff-beck/hi-ho-silver-lining" rel="nofollow - Hi Ho Silver Lining ," a #4 UK hit for Jeff Beck in 1967 and "Help Me Girl," a Top 40 hit for The Animals in 1966 in both the UK and US.

I think a few Manilow songs might have slipped through the cracks at the Old Grove, along with the Sedakas, Diamonds, Taylors, Carleys, Denvers etc. but If I was Cecil I wouldn't admit to it either HAH!

I had an interesting conversation with a black co-worker once. He claimed that his black sisters and bros' loved Barry Manilow but hated Neil Diamond with a passion. I would have thought the opposite considering Neil's manly, gravelly voice and tight bellbottoms. Yancy wasn't the most diverse fellow in his musical knowledge or tastes however ...I told him my Ella Fitzgerald joke and he said he never heard of Ella Fitzgerald. To me that's like a white guy saying he never heard of Elvis.

Speaking of Mandy and silly songs, here's one that Cecil definitely never played in public...(but the guy in Golden Discs confided in me that he sold him a copy back in 1969)Wink

By and large, 1969 was a transformative year in the U.S.  https://www.npr.org/2019/06/28/733500331/why-we-remember-stonewall" rel="nofollow - The Stonewall Riots invigorated the gay rights movement,  https://www.npr.org/2019/08/15/751266900/how-woodstock-changed-the-little-town-of-bethel-n-y" rel="nofollow - Woodstock  brought nearly 1 million people together to celebrate peace, love and music and  https://www.npr.org/tags/157288358/neil-armstrong" rel="nofollow - Neil Armstrong  became the first human to walk on the moon.

It was also a great year for music — but who knew that the year that produced songs like "Fortunate Son," "Age Of Aquarius" and "Everyday People" would crown a bubblegum pop tune by a fictional cartoon band as its top song of the year?

"Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies – yes, http://archiecomics.com/" rel="nofollow -  from the comics  – was named  https://americanradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Music/Archive-Billboard-IDX/IDX/60s/1969/Billboard%201969-12-27-OCR-Page-0017.pdf" rel="nofollow - No. 1  on Billboard's Year-End Countdown in 1969. And Andy Kim of "Rock Me Gently" fame co wrote "Sugar Sugar".

Some claim that "Rock Me Gently" initially was a hit as Andy Kim sounded like Neil Diamond back in 1974.

This was a Cecil/Grove standard for the slow sets around 1969. Neil's first hit (I think?) and his best song ever.

Ah sure you are still only a baby RR

TRIVIA some may not know that Neil wrote: " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Im_a_Believer" rel="nofollow - I'm a Believer ", " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Little_Bit_Me,_a_Little_Bit_You" rel="nofollow - A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You ", "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)", and "Love to Love", all performed by  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monkees" rel="nofollow - the Monkees .

I was way off with saying Red Red Wine was Neil's first hit... he was well on his way by then:

HAH! Brings back memories Pat. Shortly after I moved here I went to see Dionne Warwick in concert. Someone in the audience shouted up a request for Dionne to sing "To Sir With Love" and she threw a hissy fit on stage. Then she went into this long rant about it being a Lulu song and tore the woman a new arsehole. Kinda embarrassing and ruined the show along my love for her.

Trivia: Did you know that Dionne Warwick is/was Whitney Houston's aunt?

Here's another singer of the Barry Manilow ilk that us really kewl Grovers sl*gged for his cutesy apple pie image. Turned out he was a raving alcoholic and "let's go party!" kind of guy.

John Denver's "Annie's Song" was played at the Grove in my time there.

Loved Mama Cass both solo and with Mama'& Papa's.

I knew that about Dionne to Whitney link.

I loved Lulu's "The Boat That I Rowed" long before I knew it was a Neil Diamond song.

As you pointed out earlier Pogue Neil Diamond wrote a huge number of great songs not just for himself but for others.

I think his musical prowess was recognised when The Band had him on the artist list for their incredible "Last Waltz" concert.

There seems to be some rule that it must be at least 25years since your first hit record or something?
This year the induction ceremony is being held at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Usually it's held in some slum hotel in New York City, because nobody in their right mind wants to come near Cleveland –affectionately known as "The Mistake on the Lake".

A bit of Rock & Roll history: I was actually on MTV and had my face on the front page of USA-Today for the opening of the Rock and Roll Museum. Jerry Garcia died a day or two before the opening and they put together a quickie memorial wall. I was on a ladder, screen printing Jerry's name when the cameras started rolling. The can of ink dropped from my hand and spattered from floor to ceiling across the entire display...one of my life's biggest disasters. I was always a master of timing.

Me living in the Us of A I had to look up that programme/episode. It was a similar situation but broadcast live on national TV. That's the dayI changed my name from Sean to Pogue...(just to get Shane Mc Gowan blamed for it). You might have noticed that Shane has not been nominated yet.Wink

That's true Pat. It was around Christmas so will be about 50 years this cChristmas since I asked her to dance. I don't remember the first song we danced to but remember being surprised at her asking me if I liked Leadbelly. Her girlfriends had tipped her off ahead of time that the weirdo Sean had his beady eyes on her and that he loved Leadbelly HAH!

My advice to the young is, if you ask a girl up to dance never ever buy her a Fanta and a Club Milk 'cos you never know where it might lead

Jaysus, Leadbelly.

If a bird had of asked me that in my time in the Grove I'd have thought she was referring to some kind of food, like pork or something.😂😂😂

I hadn't heard of Leadbelly at that time.

Thanks Frank!

I don't want this to get around so don't tell anyone (that's why I'm posting it on the internet) but I was such a Leadbelly fan that I christened my son Huddie for his middle name. Not a big deal today with all of the Chaquitas, Rodricos and Jessabels  around, but back then it confused a lot of family and in-laws because they had never heard of a saint Huddie.

I had to explain that Huddie Ledbetter was the saint of 12 string guitars.

Argh! the silly things you do when you are young...the poor kid has to live with being named after a black murderer-singer from Louisianna.

Love it Frank.

Is that from "Suzanne" by Leonard Cohen?

A great slow song in Mount Prospect.

That was also a crowd favourite in St. Pauls in the late 70s into early 80s.

Gonna check them out later Frank. There is an overlap between your time and mine (I was 71 to 75, but my "glory years" were 71 and 72). Interested to see what you've listed...

Frank,

Saw your list on FB.

As I said I love EVERY song on your playlist some of which may have been played before my time in the Grove (1972-1975) but I know them all the same.

Amazing selection.

A rake of possible Grove radio shows in the making there Frank.

I was a Grover between '68 and '71 Frank so our paths must have crossed a couple of times. We probably even took a pee together without knowing it.

Those Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich songs bring back memories. I think their album was appropriately named -"If Music be the Food of Love, Prepare for Indigestion."

Had a look at Frank's playlist there - yep, I know them, and love just about every one of them. Top-class playlist material for sure

On the subject, Frank, I saw you posted a vinyl album with loads of 60s tracks on it on Facebook.  Where did you get it, may I ask?  Was it online or in a shop in Dublin?

Another nice take on the song, Frank.

If I'm honest though, I prefer the original. I think it's very difficult for any artist to reinterpret music composed and performed by someone else. I'm sure there are such examples out there, but none come to mind right now. Of course, these things are largely subjective anyway, so my "meh" reaction to something might be someone else's "magnificent".

I don't think the above is very clear. I had a lovely night out last night with old and dear pals, but it's taking its toll on me today lol!

YEH-but who has the nicest eyes: John, José or Judy?
I agree that with only a few exceptions the original is better than the cover versions. Being an old strummer who struggled for years to learn the guitar I'm always impressed how some people can pick up an instrument and play it effortlessly (Judy as an example). José is a much better guitarist but he's missing that tinny steel string sound that we have all grown to love.

eh - Did I mention Judy's blue eyes?

Very nice Frank. Have to say, I never heard of the band or the track (as you predicted lol ) . The producers name - Wayne Bickerton - is kinda familiar to me, but I could be getting confused on that one! I'm off to google/Wikipedia now to research the band (and the producer!) a little more ...

I never heard that song Frank, but not because of age. I had to look World of Oz up and found out that your song was a follow up to this "One Hit Wonder" which I remember well:

Cecil probably had most of these in his orange box when the Grove doors opened in '67 but most likely  an American list of hits:
