Dont expect to make it, sadly - the logistics of driving up and back, overnight in Dublin etc, are not gonna work for me at all this time round. Shame I wont get there - but have a great time Sean, Mel, and all who are going along. Have a drink for me.. πŸ‘πŸ·πŸ·

I'm the same Sean, I was thinking about it afterwards, and the last time I met up with anyone was when Cecil, RIP, was still alive!

Its a bit of a production, including an overnight stay, if I go to any evening event in Dublin Sean, so its not always convenient for me to be tied up over 2 days. But its past time at this stage that I get along to something; so hopefully 2024 it will happen... 🀞

Thanks Sean πŸ‘

We're actually heading off to Thailand/Cambodia on 6th December.

This trip booked since early in the year long before any Grove Reunion was mentioned.

So besides the cost of going to Ireland I couldn't have gone anyway because of our trip.

Thanks Sean.

Will let folks know in advance of any plans to visit Ireland.

Marjie has to go through a visa process but that shouldn't be a problem being married to an Irish citizen.

Flights, accomodation and daily expenses all have to be costed and saved for.

Hi men, I'm back! Had to get a new password, anyway...

...what Sean sez is true Mel. There's Sean, Pat, myself (although I can be an irregular attendee!!!), and yourself from time to time. That's it I think. I still prefer it to Facebook!!!

Anyway how are things Mel? Job OK, will you get much time off for Christmas? All OK my end, still doing various part-time things that nearly add up to a full-time job (apart from the money !!!). Might try get on to the Grove show tonight if I can manage to log on OK...

Whoops!!! Embarrassed giggle! Poguey is making me pay for forgetting him with all his posts tonight. Of course Pogue is one of the few remaining loyal hard core posters here. Also Brian posts regularly with playlists/playback and gets involved in conversations. Big apologies lads!

But I can't think of anyone else beyond this small group. Anyone else I'm forgetting..??? Frank dropped out a good while ago, and there is the very, very rare one-off greeting from a lady member, but that's really it I think...

@Gerry - work is a pain in the arse but it pays the bills I suppose.  Sad to hear/see that so few are still posting on this site but sadly stuff like FB grabs everyone's attention and even attracts the odd weirdo, which you don't get here.  Looking forward to the reunion alright but wow, it will be weird without Cecil.  First time ever, my two sisters and my brother are also going to a reunion - they all went to the Grove at, generally, different times than me, but good to see them getting involved.  My younger sis was over last night and she was saying that she was getting back into the "old" music, thanks to me, so there is hope yet. :)  See ya next Saturday SHH.

Cheers Mel. Yes, apart from the pain in the bum.of not getting to the reunion this time, it is striking it will be the first one - in more recent years- that won't have Cecil as the focal point. Now we could say the music, our fellow-grovers, the positive atmosphere generally - are focal points, and of course they are. But a touch of 'Hamlet without the Prince"??? I dunno. Weird/strange it may well be at the start of the evening; but hopefully it will quickly evolve into the joyous, raucous, good-humored, fabulous night of music and friendship that characterises all the reunions...

...enjoy; have a pint for me; and play that air-guitar loud and proud...WinkTongueTongue

I remember seeing reunion videos and thinking how great it was that all of the music was stored on an iPod. Now with music apps almost every song ever written is available at your fingertips. Did Cecil approve of the iPod or was all the enjoyment in buying and spinning the hard copy...kinda like some of the great writers who never had an interest in learning to type.
For me the big thrill was holding the sleeves against my cheek and... well you know, like a great man once said "Vinyl Porn" Embarrassed  HAH!

I am a firm believer in, and lover of, vinyl, hence the user name.  I'm not a fan of music on computers, CDs etc., but some stuff you just cannot get on vinyl anymore but the vinyl scene has made a huge comeback in recent years.  That said, I can understand, for space/practicality reasons, Andy choosing to que up the music on a machine, rather than spinning some of the old singles.  Vinyl or not, the craic is still always 90, as they say, at the reunions. Smile

Pogue/Mel

I loved my vinyl collection.

Sadly had to sell it all when I moved here.

Had over 200 albums and nearly 700 singles in a special cabinet specially made for them.

Just wasn't practical to move them here due cost and space in our home here.

At the reunions Andy Colbert did the music gagedry and Cecil announced the song and did any dedications and general banter with the crowd.

He loved it .

It'll be nostalgic for sure at the reunion on 2nd December with Andy on the decks ably supported by Rob Nolan, Cecil's son. Keeping the tradition going.

For those of us who cannot go an sure the folks on here will fill us in and hopefully post some photos on the FB forum.

When you think about it Pat - First you found it impossible to go from Mt Prospect to St Pauls - Then difficult to go from Vinyl to Cd's - and Now! You prefer The Grove Forum over Facebook.

You have been an old Fogerty-Follower-Fart from the get go and you are just going to have to toe the line with us younger GrungeGothAirHeadBanging members.

...kiddin, even though I'm much younger than you I refuse to go an Facebook.LOL

Saturday's reunion was brilliant,Cecil's son Rob did a fantastic job filling his fathers shoes, and it looked like he was really enjoying it,which was great. And it was fantastic to see so many friends that I had not seen since 2019,and everyone was in top form. The venue was quite intimate, and the lighting was dark, with red lights ( not great for photo's ),it made me think of what the original Grove in Mount Prospect might have been like... the bar service was very good, and there was a great variety of drinks, but the only problem was they didn't accept cash,so luckily I had my card with me.I was delighted to see the dance floor packed for most of the night, and Grovers doing what they do best,it was the perfect way to pay tribute to,and remember Cecil...the spirit of the Grove is still alive and well...here's to the next reunion

Brian's post from the 2005 thread.

Saturdays reunion was a special one without doubt. Rob and Andy did Cecil proud and put on a great night. I think this was partly down to the long gap since Nov 2019, first since Cecils passing and also post Covid. I had good chats with alot of folks and people were just glad and happy to have it on.

I know it is hard for Andy as first time without Cecil by his side. However as you know, Rob is a great guy and did a fantastic job on the mic, getting folks up to dance and keeping them there (remind you of anyone?). Rob also gave a great talk at the end and believe me it was very emotional for all. I think they were taken back by the great response om the night. Like a good gig, audiance and DJs feeding off good energy. Rest assured the reunions are in good hands.

Pogue's post from the 2005 thread.

The 2023 reunion is over now, and we wait for a report on how it went.

I am thinking that some of the younger attendees might not know they were partying in a Rock and Roll shrine. The β€œTennis Club” or β€œOulton” is where, around 1969, Phil Lynnott, as the lead singer of Skid Row practiced. Without any admission charge you could just mosey into the place on weeknights, usually half empty except for us losers and a bunch of Raheny guys…seldom any girls to speak of. Understandable, as Phil was brutal back then and couldn’t sing a lick, even worse on the base, 10 minute drum solos, not a soul on the dance floor.  The only enjoyable part was when they played a few records during their breaks. Ahh, sure we didn’t appreciate we were on hallowed ground or what we were witnessing. HAH!

...during the same period Skid Row was the house band at "The Go Go" on Abbey Street. They sucked there too but had a loyal following. Hard to get into without a membership card, or if you didn't look like you stepped off Carnaby Street.

...the band was so terrible that I blame Phil and them as my number 1 reason for leaving Ireland  Wink

Howya Joey and all. I'm still here meself on and off.

I shudda gone to the reunion. If I had, I would have been somewhere in Dublin on Sunday morning, having stayed overnight. But I didn't, so I wasn't...which resulted in me walking the dog as usual on Sunday morning, in slippy conditions. And guess what...
...I slipped, smashed my wrist in a few places. Had to have an operation last Tuesday to put a plate in my wrist etc. Will be 6 weeks before it's OK again. Oh, well, at least it wasn't my good right hand. Pain in the bum (well, in the wrist) though...

...sure we be grand soon enough! Smile
