my neck is strained to breaking point , i've just about gone blind from staring into the back of the hotpress and i probably shouldn't be standing on a chair with wheels. but damn it, this is important. there's a big black pile of clothes lying on the floor behind me and it's getting bigger all the time. then suddenly there it is! yesssss! it's a little grey but what the hell it's dark in that room in the shieling . excellent it still fits, well i can get it over my head at least. but there it is in all its glory " my 1991 skid row t-shirt" last seen in all its glory probably passed out in the alcove. just wondering guys'n'girls if any older , slightly tighter t-shirts going to be outed at easter? and if so what age and who? ------------- softlad "remember if you wanna get aHEAD you gotta give a little" |

Oh I had these cool skin tight dark brown velvet pants with a cool granddad shirt... and of course my desert boots.... still fit!!! Better chance of getting it on a barby doll.....

Well, My usual attire was a pair of tight black (slightly faded cos they were worn so much) jeans with Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Slayer and some words of Stairway to heaven and the guy with the lamp and hood painted all over them, usually a tight t-shirt, black with or without band names printed and my doc martins, big sloppy jumper on cold days. Wouldn't get them near me these days cos during that time I was a competitive dancer and you could bounce coins off my arse,I was very proud.. Ah Star,which pic. you talking about, me really tall,God Bless your cotton socks.I can hear the others laughing from here. Was never caught in any of the official photos,thank God,but Lenny has a few from Christmas.Talk nicely to him and ya never know. I'd be lucky if that Zeppelin T Shirt fit my 12 yr old,let alone me. It just a jacket that zips up the front and has two side pockets. They were called LOON jackets. I have no idea why but they were hip in '72. I'm not sure yet whether I can make 16th. It was magic in those days. I never been to St Pauls. I stopped going to the Grove circa late 1974 and was planning on going back when it burnt down in 1975. The music was brill. You had the greats like Beatles , Stones, Purple, Zeppelin, Who, Pink Floyd who's music was at it's peak. I know the Beatles were split but in '72 their music was still played a lot. Then you had Status Quo, Bowie, Elton John, Rod Stewart (he had 2 amazing albums in 1971/2 which Cecil always played) T Rex, Mott The Hoople and other so called glam rockers emerging. Add to that music from the USA. Bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Neil Young's solo stuff, Doobie Brothers, Eagles, ZZ Top. And of course we had Rory Gallagher "Live In Europe '72" and Thin Lizzy had appeared on TOTP with "Whiskey In The Jar" And lots more. It was a glorious era for music and Cecil had his finger on the pulse of what was happening. Besides the music was the fashion. You see most of us had come from Christian Brothers or girls from schools run by nuns which were very strict. So we were the first generation to break free and make it happen. Some people were not allowed go to the Grove........it was looked on by some parents as a den on inequity. Thank God my parents were brill and I even had a motorbike which made it all the more groovy for me. You have to remember in 1972 there were no mobile phones, colour TV was only coming in, no motorways, no condoms, Catholic Church had a huge say in society, the troubles in the North had really started.......it was all so different then. That is why the Grove was such a great place......you could go there and be yourself.......it was so cool. Great post pat ! It was very different for you going to the Grove circa around 72 then me going to St pauls in 82.. the 70's were much harder times (especially with the troubles flaring up) so I can appreciate what your saying often I think (even back to when i was 17 and going to St Pauls ) that I would liked it back in the 70's ..loved all the music. Was heading down there from 82-85 , new romantics were around at the time and I could'nt stand bands like duran duran. was listening to Floyd , genesis , Supertramp , the doobies and Crosby Stills nash and young..a friend dragged to me down to saint Pauls one night and from the moment I stepped into the place , I just felt so at home. Meet one or two people on that night who have remained life long friends. Very special time for all of us I gather ..We had our coloured televisions back then but who the feck ever stayed in on a Saturday Nights to watch the late late show...(except our parents of course) Really good to have the luxury of this website for us look back at that time ..no matter when you were heading down there. been logging here since last September and it's almost like going back and starting my grove days all again ..Lots of great people on this website .. great laughs..betcha none of us thought back then we'd be doing this posting thing twenty years on.. I agree with you about Cecil.. Sure I think it was yourself on a previous post metioned he was the John Peel of his day.could'nt agree with you more, especially when all those bands you mentioned were in their prime.. and Cecil was there to give us the best of it.Wonder if knows how good his repoitaire made us feel... Thanks Russ. Yep, its like memory lane here. But there's a common thread in that everyone has good memories of the Grove. I'm sure Cecil knows what his impact was.........I think enough of us have said it to him often enough. When I was working in O'Connell St I used to drop over to him on the corner of Abbey and O'Connell and we used to have some great chats about the old times. And you could see the twinkle in his eye when I told him of the influence he had over me, let alone so many others. I'm glad I was there in '72 and Cecil himself admits on the website that '67 to '73 was the best time. And sure isn't he coming back to perform at the reunions. I'm sure he loves it but he's such a lovely man and so modest that he would never boast about what he achieved. ------------- May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride. Nice one Pat .. We're all enjoying ourselves here looking back at that time, thats the common thread alright ! Remember chatting to Cecil one night at St Pauls, He was saying to me that we should look for other places to go as he thought the grove thing was dying out, there was alot of people going abroad to find work at that time, and number of grovers has started to come down a little alright, but the fact is he kept the whole thing going for another 12 years ... thats dedication for you ! I very much enjoyed what you both had to say Pat and Russ. I could not agree more. Cecil is a legend in my book. He gave us such great memories and he's still doing it in a way - bringing people together to speak about good music and the likes.
