This thread is for forum members to recommend albums/artists/tracks that other forum members may not have or even heard of.
We probably have or are aware of the most famous artists/albums, e.g Exile On Main Street by Rolling Stones but what about other artists/albums/tracks we'd recommend.
For example.
I have an album by Jason & The Scorchers called "Lost and Found" from 1985 which I highly recommend.
JJ Cale "Anthology" is another highly recommended album.
Corey Stevens, "Blue drops Of Rain". Has a track named "The Brothers" that is one of the best songs I have ever heard.
Molly Hatchet, "Fall of the Peacemakers" off the "No Guts...No Glory" album. Up there with "Freebird".
Blue Ridge Rangers. Album by John Fogerty under name of Blue Ridge Rangers where he covers some country songs and plays ALL the instruments. Also his "Centrefield" and "Blue Moon Swamp" album.
Electric Light Orchestra, " A New World Record". A highly under rated album which in my view is a classic.
Grateful Dead, "American Beauty" and "In The Dark". Two more classics.
Happy Mondays. "Pills,Thrills and Bellyaches". I love the song "Step On" which of course was taken from a John Congos '71 song "He's Gonna Step On You Again".
Los Lobos. "The Neighbourhood".
Joan Osbourne. "Relish". Has the track "If God was One Of Us". The rest of the album is brill as well.
Rolling Stones. "Stripped". The so called unplugged Stones album. Superb.
Velvet Underground. "1969" . A live double album. Possibly one of the best live albums of all time.
Van Morrison & The Chieftans. "Irish Heartbeat". what a combination playing some old Irish classics.
Warren Zevon. "Stand In The Shadow" . Live album. Another great guy, sadly gone.
Anyway, thats a few albums/artists/tracks that I personally recommend.
These may not be your taste or you may already have all these.
I hope you guys give me a few suggestions/recommendations. Even new artists.

Rock on Russ. Look forward to your recommendations. It's hard to know where to stop here as I'm assuming most folks have a knowledge of music, through Cecil/Grove days.

Revolution Calling , Revolution Calling,
Calling all you prog. rockers out there, just a quick word to recommend the long awaited return to form of seattle's greatest ever band, Queensryche. Yes indeed the long awaited Operation Mindcrime2 is on the shelves and is well worth a listen. all the favourites are there including the wonderful Pamela Moor as Sister Mary , and check out the legendary Ronnie James Dio as Doctor X on "the chase ".
Nice work boys, now where have you been since 1990 ?

Seriously Softlad,ya don't have to convince me about his voice. Not his fault he's Vertically Challenged.
I'm a big fan of Heaven and Hell and of his Rainbow stuff. In fact I think Starstruck is a deadly song and one of my old favourites.
Would welcome a review of that show and of any others you can manage.

rolo and russian, you guys should check out dio's older stuff with elf . it's a bit more american country and blues than you'd imagine but some of the more mellow moments like 'this is your life' and 'never more' and the sublime 'wonderworld' showcase his voice amazingly well. the more upbeat stuff like 'black swampy water ' and 'prentice wood' create a great singalong moments.
checkout the 3 elf albums :
1) elf
2) trying to burn the sun
3) carolina country ball

Did you go, and if so please post a review.
Was never a fan of Queen or their stuff but love Free and Bad Company. Ever get a hold of Straight Shooter by Bad Company or of Paul Kossoff's solo album,...........can't remember what it's called.
Both are well worth a listen.

19/06/2006 IRON MAIDEN ANNOUNCE BRAND NEW STUDIO ALBUM new single out on-line , great new guitar sound, can't wait to see the new material performed live at chrstmas in the point
|
Iron Maiden plan to release their new studio album entitled A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH, in early September.
The band started writing songs at the end of 2005 after a short break from their hugely successful festival appearances in Europe and the USA. After Christmas the songs were completed and rehearsed when the band then got together with producer Kevin 'Caveman' Shirley at Sarm West Studios in London to start work on recording the backing tracks.
Kevin Shirley has now co-produced three of the bands studio albums alongside Steve Harris, as well as two of their recent Live DVD's and albums. From this the working relationship between Kevin and the band seems to get stronger and stronger. Says Kevin, 'The Beast is back! I feel from the outset we all clicked on this one. We spent two months in the studio, from Go to Whoa - from Nicko's 'tubs up' to final mixes and sequenced master! That's a tiny gestation period for an album. Producing Iron Maiden is like sitting in the head and driving one of those mammoth automatons from Star Wars or Saturday morning cartoons! And there's nothing that can stop it!'
'I feel incredibly privileged to have been around to see this album born and breathe life. There have been only a couple of occasions in my career when the ENTIRE process of recording felt so complete - and it is on display here.'
As on previous projects all of the tracks were performed live and together in one room. No click tracks or computer tightening or manipulation has happened at any stage of the recording.
Says Steve Harris,' I think in many ways this has been the easiest album in terms of recording that we've ever done. The whole process of writing through to recording was very natural. I think in terms of the material we've also pushed our boundaries yet again and I think it will please our fans but also really surprise a lot of people as well. The sound we've managed to get is very powerful for a Maiden record and all of us have pushed ourselves in our own ways to create something that we're all immensely proud of and I think working as quickly as we did with Kevin really was part of that process. We simply can't wait to take this out on the road. We've played some great shows and had a lot fun recently introducing some of our older songs to a new generation of fans. However for us personally we're incredibly excited about getting out and performing these new tracks.'
Says Bruce Dickinson,'This album has to be our best since working with Kevin. There is such a wide scope of musicianship on this album and in parts this album is truly epic. I thought with the likes of Paschendale from the last studio album that we could only hope to surpass that but having now heard the album back as well as sitting with a few select people and hearing their reactions as well I truly believe we have managed it. Every one of us has put everything into this record and it's really paid off. However we've had such fun making it that it's almost difficult to believe what we've managed to achieve in the time it took.'
The full track listing is as below.
A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH

I know I *should* have better things to do on a Saturday night but I am slouched (post Ireland match) in front of my computer listening to "platinum" by Mike Oldfield. If you havent already got the album, check it out - it used to be a BIG favourite at all our old parties and everyone used to really enjoy it.
Mel.
PS. Edit: the more I hear, the more I cannot recommend enough the album. If you even think you might be into Mike Oldfield music then check it out!

I have a single called Moonlight Shadow by Mike Oldfield.
The guitar solo at the end is one of my favourites.

Wasnt Moonlight Shadow the song he wrote about John Lennon's death? Someone told me that some years ago but I never did find out if that was true. Although, from the lyrics I recall, it seemed to make sense alright.

I heard that too, don't know if it's true. Didn't Mike have a sister Sally; she had a hit with 'Mirrors'.? Could be totally wrong there, but now I can't get the song out of my head... Mirrors in the Sun and we brightly shine..

Hi Mel, (isn't google barred here? think I read that in a post!) Yep I think she was more of a folk singer and that was her big single. Speaking of Folk, I used to have some Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny albums. Will have my old record deck hooked up tomorrow so looking forward to hearing vinyl again! I've no excuse for not going Hallowe'en, what about you?

Going to a Games (D&D) convention in Clontarf Castle (great venue) on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of that weekend but there's only a Charity Auction on Sunday night which I'm sure I can skip (I can never afford to match the bids on stuff I want) - I'd say I can easily make the 7.30pm start down the road from Clontarf Castle in the Sheiling (just gotta make sure everything is aOK with the other half!!).

BR, I have both the Factions and regular Guild Wars games - personally, I slightly prefer the regular GW but they're both fab!!
Re other half's permission, its probably a given but she herself seems unsure whether she wants to come along too (she went to a few groves back in the day and she now says they were "OK" but I suspect she wouldnt be mad keen on coming down herself to a reunion - could be wrong).
Shouldnt be a problem for me to get there anyway....
PS I'd say ye would love the Games Convention if ye get a chance to get down - fab venue too + a full bar!! There is a charge for both of ye if you both intend to play games but you can purchase some sort of "minder" ticket pretty cheaply (I think) which means that he can play games but you are there as guardian.

I was going to buy Guild Wars only €15 in GAME. Do youo have to buy Factions or can it be upgraded via the net ??/

Question How come Roundaboutoo has 2 stars and less post than Brunswick who has 1 star and more post...Hmmmmm !
Ok get this topic back to Album reviews

Well spotted BR, That'd be rule #1746: '1 star deducted from anyone who admits to owning 1 or more Chris deBurgh records' (both myself & mel got Groupie+2 stars after 20 posts - guess a 1 star Active member beats a 2 star Groupie?) CP
btw, got Dylan's Modern Times Yesterday but have only listened to 1st track, Thunder on the Mountain - excellent.
