Cecil and Crusty

Thanks for the memories last night.

I hadn't danced to some of those tracks in years. I was raring to go from 8-ish but hardly anyone was in then and the mates definitely weren't ready to dance until at least 3 pints into them. :(

I think instead of a goth, indie & industrial chick, I'm also a bit of a rocker chick, by the amount of rock I was dancing to. Ok ehm I'll admit - I've a lot of them on my hard drive! Thank god for Broadband, that's all I say!
I think I was on the floor most of the night, bar taking a few breathers.

Ah feck it, I'm a music addict.. I'm a sponge.. I absorb music.. and going by some of the other posts here, I'm not the only one. Thank heavens.

A question for ye - any other dj's here other than Crusty and myself? Biker Pat - was it you that said they dj'd in Thailand? I don't use mikes either.

Btw haven't danced a slow set in what approx 12 yrs!! Sweet Jesus!. Two of my friends decided to ask me up for a few songs just to take the piss and to give me a twirl - the chancers - we're all single!

And yep I sort of got part of the arse dance for Rock Lobster - I ain't as young as I used to be :p

The moshing - god I don't remember it as mental as that or is that just because the bouncers used to control it a bit. I bet there's a few sore backs, necks and elbows!

I met Black Russian (it was you in the Metallica t-shirt wasn't it?) but that's about it and yes Crusty that was me asking for REM's The One I love - ie I'm the blonde, that was in black, dancing mostly in front of the stage on my own, with not a care in the world.. and accompanied a few times by 2 others also in black!

I do remember seeing a few faces I recognise - not from the Grove Days but from gigs funny enough. Ehm two or 3 faces in particular from The House Of Love & Wedding Present gigs in the Village.

And one other seeming lone goth alternative type.. haven't a clue who you are, but I think you've been into Dominion before!! If not, I've seen ya somewhere before..

I never forget faces!! Muhahah!

Ehm next time, a suggestion though - to play REM stand a wee bit later, 'cause it was a bit early to be starting the special dance with only a handful of people on the floor and I didn't know them and the actual dance was only coming back to me while just dancing to myself.
Forget the Macarena or line dance - this was the original line dance!

Thanks again. I'll be back!
Orla

P.S If anyone is in town on a Sat night, sure pop into http://dominion.gothic.ie - Dominion in Frazers (downstairs) and say hello to me! You never know might, just play an Indie track for ya!

Very well put Orla, yet another mad night courtesy of Crusty and Cecil.Really enjoyed it again, thanks lads.

Orla, was that you and your mates at the table in the corner near the door to the little bar ? We were in early too so reckon I've got ya all right.

Once again the music was great, highlights for me, live version of Gloria ( U2 ),Sweet Home Alabama (Skynyrd, which I love ),Emerald ( Lizzy ) thanks Andy, even if loadsa people didn't recognise it and Alternative Ulster ( SLF ),to name but a few.

Met up with a few Forum Regulars which added to the enjoyment of the night.

Oh yeah, and the moshing wasn't that bad, once ya had someone to hang on to.

Looking forward to next time.

Yep that was us at that table near the bar.

Ah you should have introduced yourself to us. Tony remembers a few faces and introduced me to a friend of his and her boyfriend. But Mark didn't see anyone he remembers from his time which was about 89/90 - 92-ish. Both are from Donaghmede and hung around and went with their local friends.

None of my old friends from my local area were out - actually I only run into one of them every so often and none of them were goth, cureheads or indieheads at all. So I don't recognise anyone from those days bar who I see at gigs and I defo know a few faces from last night from gigs.

But other than that, we don't know anyone. Though that doesn't matter as a good time was had by all.

The moshing - nah wasn't bad but is worse than I remember. Then again maybe I'm getting a wee bit old for it especially after being stood and pushed about a bit. And not sure which is worse - a group of teenage guys being boys or a group of 30-40 somethings remembering when they were boys!
It wasn't as mental as Ministry in TBMC a few yrs ago - got bruises from that to prove it!

Highlights for me - oh gotta be Rock Lobster, Boston's More Than A Feeling, Black Betty, Sweet Home Alabama, Stand(though it was early), Gloria as well and Pride (U2 are my fav band and will always be so), The Stones, and Nirvana - though strictly speaking the latter wasn't a Grove song for me.

I have this recollection of headbanging to something (wasn't Freebird was it?) - headbanging another thing I haven't done in years... remember me saying something about being a rock chick?!

Me musically confused

My goth street creed will be in tatters..

No such thing as being musically confused Orla, I prefer to refer to an Eclectic taste.

Ditto on U2, seen 'em millions of times through the years, ( never liked Pride though ), friend in school grew up round the corner from Larry so was a fan from the early days, ( though it must be said at the very start it was under protest.)

Next time, we'll be sure and say hello.

Eclectic taste, I like that! Sort of fits in with me.

U2 - seen them a few times myself, probably not as much as yourself though (Croker '87, Point '89 and Croker '05 - twice) but a fan since '85 - Live Aid!

I bet you know cousins of mine then. They live/lived in Ardlea and had a caravan in Donabate, so knew the Rowans as well. The cousins went to Mount Temple and one of them was in Larry Mullins' year. She lives in England now. My mum lived in Cedarwood Park for a few yrs just before she got married.

I'm also a big Virgin Prunes fan but I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea!

Oh and a bit of trivia but also passing the word on a good up and coming local Irish band- check out http://www.myspace.com/directormusic - Director . Rowan is the nephew of one Steve Averill and I work with his mum! Or rather she's one the senior staff.
I've heard their new cd and some demo's and it's very good. Kind of like a mix of Interpol, Editors, Franz Ferdinand and Coldplay if you or anyone else is into that type of music.

But do come over and say hello next time!

Big fan myself of U2(Verging on Sad fan). Have seen U2 live every gig since 87 the only on I missed was Dec 26th and 29th 1989 in the Point was at the other two. Went to both Slane gigs and the 3 nights in Croker for Vertigo the third night wass the best was I might have to do a review on that in your Review section Rolo.
If any of you are looking for any U2 gigs live I have about 10-12 gigabytes of of U2 concert from 1980 live in Tullamore to  2006 Mexico

oH and I have a great version of The Fly Bono starts of with "Jean Jeanie\The Fly\Satisfaction at the end of it... Its Cool

Please do that review Peter, would love to see it.

I agree with ya on the Croker thing, the Monday night was definitely the best, thought the sound on the Friday night was crap. On the Saturday night we were at a party in a friends house in Ballybough so heard the show even though we didn't go.

We were in Madison Square Garden in November, now that was a show.

I had invite from friends in Arizona and Philly to go and see them there but money and job situation was tight so I couldn't go. Only time I went to U2 outside of Ireland was Elevation tour and went to Antwerp it was great show. The end of Bullet the Blue sky he done a little bit of McPhisto from the Zootv tour it was cool.. Have copy of that show too

A question for ye - any other dj's here other than Crusty and myself? Biker Pat - was it you that said they dj'd in Thailand? I don't use mikes either.

I did a bit of DJ'ing in the 70's. Nothing major. 21st's, Christmas parties. Hired a couple of turntables and used my vinyl 45's. Did the mike thing then but like Cecil I did very little talking.

I did do DJ at a little pool bar in Bangkok last trip. Basically myself and an English buddy ofmine who I meet there each year, found this little pool bar but their music was sh*te. So I told the manageress I'd come back only if she allowed me play my Cd's.

I had 10 Cd's which are compilations of songs I like and I got to play them and went back nearly every night for a week.

Had a real blast playing pool with guys from all parts of the world and some great rock 'n roll in the background, played loud.

That was it, nothing major but its amazing how music can bring people together.

Wish I was there nowsmiley19

May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Wow. Lucky sods. The Croker one's in '87 was the Sat 27th June. On the Sunday, I sat up in my bedroom and reheard it all over again. Was absolutely thrilled to have seen Lou Reed that night. Btw they sound checked on the Thurs & Fri - I heard them playing Pride from my local park!

The one in the Point that I got to was Dec 26th. Great gig. I didn't get to the RDS at all. Call it bad timing, broke and stuff. And don't talk to me about Slane. I was/am on their noticeboard and got notice at the time of the presale. All gone when I went looking. Then was up v early that time and was on the phone and net trying to get tickets. Couldn't. So legged it into Henry St - gone. Ran upto Comet - gone. Ran upto Grafton St and just missed the riots outside HMV there. But saw enough of the damage.
So when the second date was announced, I tried again, but same story. I was extremly miffed at the time as I didn't have broadband and was like half of Ireland competing with the rest of the world.

So for the gigs last year time I got the presale. Went Fri & Sat - though the Sat ticket was an unexpected bonus from a friend who had a spare. I thought the sound on the Fri was grand, but we were in the Upper Cusack Stand, up near the stage, so it was grand and great view of the stage show. On the Sat, I made it my business to get into the pit - had the pitch and had a ball.

So much so that for the Mon, I ran down to Quinns to see if I could get another ticket. No luck and actually hung around North Circular with friends of mine that saw them in London and who couldn't see them here and who travelled all the way over from Rathfarnham!

From the sounds of it Monday seemed to be a good show. I was so pissed off that they played Gloria, Bad AND 40!! I missed 40! Was at the back end at this stage watching people leaving and when Vertigo got played the 2nd time the hoards left, so we left as well. I must have been up at Whitworth Road or as good as when 40 came on.

GRRRR...

I must put my pics up - got great, fabby one's from the Sat. I was just in side the circle and near enough to that Canuck that got pulled out

Anyhow. Anyone here Bauhaus fans?! Curious to see if anyone was at the gig in Jan?!

Coolabula, great story.
I've never dj'd for a 21st but I've done at 3 gothy weddings! The first one was a bit mad - not my cuppa and I tried to give everyone something but not what the couple wanted - they wanted the goth stuff and the family the normal stuff It was a bit weird to be honest. Black Russian would approve of this "their" song was Unforgiven!

I've never used a mike, other than during a raffle once. My lungs are strong enough to tell people thanks and to feck off at the end of the night!

Music does unite people in general alright, though I've seen it actually cause lots of rifts and rants on mailing lists and people disagreeing on genre's, tastes and all sorts.

Hi Orla,

Just laughing reading this and thinking of something similar. My favourite song is Out of Control, which of course was played on Saturday, when I wasn't there and not on Friday or Sunday, when I was.

My favourite shows were three in a row at Christmas '82 when you and Black Russian would've been little children. Really small venue, got right to the front of the stage each night and it was two of my mates ( one the first night and one the last ) that Bono dragged up on stage to dance with him.Yeah, he used to do that then too.

Actually went straight to the Grove from the show on one of the nights, can't remember which one it was, the dates were 22/23/24 December'82 as part of the " Pre War " Tour.

I've original copies of about the first fifteen U2 Singles in Picture Sleeves ( Including U2 3 ). Used queue up outside Advance Records in South King Street to get them on the day of release.

Know what, it's great to chat to someone who shares an addiction.

HMMMM!! U2 Croke park 87 back then there was no real panic for tickets. I think it took 3-4 days for the gigs to sell out then and that was a record . I queued for 13 hours down the Point for 89 Point shows was even at the New Years eve one it was great.

Zoo tv tour and can't remember if I had much hassle getting tickets for that but I know I went to Cork and the two nights in RDS.

Popmart in Lansdowne road no problems getting tickets for that I think the tickets were on sale for 5 days for that.

Now as for Slane nearly didn't make it Twice. My friends sister got six tickets for the first night and had a choice of giving a spare to her friend or her borthers mate (ME!!) So she gave to me cause I am a real fan and her mate stood her up for queing all night. The second Slane gig I reckon I got the last two tickets in Omni Park cause as soon as I got them and paid for them I turned around and the queue was being told by security tickets were gone PHEW!!!.. I was in work when I heard the second night tickets on sale . I shouted up to my boss "C YA  in  an hour or so" and ran out of the job

Croke Park 2005 Tickets I got from pre sale from U2.com but the third night I hate to say but I paid €130 for two pitch tickets and you know what it was the best night out of the three.(Review on way)

Best U2 gig I was at it a tough one but I think the Point depot were the best.

I managed to make that New Years Eve show in the Point.

Remember the support was The Fleadh Cowboys ( Pete Cummins is a neighbour ) and didn't BB King appear that night. Paid  £ 50 to my brother's mate for the ticket and had to walk home afterwards.

Remember The Fleadh Cowboys did a cover of " Everybody Must Get Stoned "

Don't remember much of the line up. Yea BB played support and then came on at the end of U2 set to do the Rattle and Hum bit "Angel of Harlem, When love comes to town and Love Rescue me"
On the 27th Dec 1989 U2 came back out for their Encore and played Two Hearts beats as one it was the last time they have played it. It was also my first time to see and hear them playing it live. He also sang a bit of "Billie Jean" before Pride...

Like yourself I don't like Pride fed up with it. The same for I still haven't found and shhh even New Years day

You and me both. That why it was so refreshing for me to hear some of the " Boy " stuff on the Vertigo Tour.

Boy is still my favourite of all the albums, followed by Joshua Tree. Some of the Set Regulars like those mentioned above ( and one or two others , Bullet the Blue Sky particularly ) have run their course.

Would love to have the opportunity to pick the set for a show, now that would be fun. ( Although they've probably forgotten the lyrics to Twilight and 11 o' Clock.)

They played 11 o' Clock on the Elevation tour a few times. On the Vertigo tour they were playing "The Ocean" and "An Cait Dubh\Into the heart".
That was on of the highlights from the Croker gigs in 05 hearing "An Cait Dubh\Into the heart" or it was great and "Gloria". I was disappointed with Bullet the blue sky on this tour. I get the impression Edge enjoys playing Bullet it opens up his Guitar skills live. Highlight for me from the last album has to Love and Peace or Else. I like the little bit of ZOO TV tour flash back during the gig. Zoo Station was one song I didn't think U2 would play again live.
This thread is getting very much of a U2 thread <Bono smiley ha ha

Ah, what about Electric Co. Remember in the old days when he used climb the speaker stacks during that.

In New York during Vertigo ( 2nd time ) we got half of Stories for Boys...............has the " Hello,Hello " bit too so it fits in nicely.

Yeah you're right about this becoming a U2 thread. Nuff said.

Yeah he sung a bit of Stories for Boys on the 3rd night here. Yeah I forgot about them playing Electric Co. on this tour.
I have a version of Beautiful Day from Arizona and Bono sings the first verse of In Gods Country sounded good.
Hey ain't U2 worthy of their own Thread here
