Hi all,
Just remembered that myself and a few guys (Colin Eyre, Andrew Hackett, John Corcoran, Pete Noonan and others) used to get together in my old front room in Brookwood Avenue on a Saturday night to headbang before the Grove. I call it "my" front room as I more or less took it over from my parents when I reached 16 or so years of age. The most popular choice for a headbang was, I think, the Song Remains The Same by Zeppelin but there were many others that people liked. Cant believe that we used to headbang in the house and my Dad used to pop his head around the door on occasion to get me to turn the music down!! Admittedly, we usually had plenty of booze inside us before we went down the road but Dad never really complained about the alcohol At some stage the venue (and some of the regulars) changed and we started to meet up on the Howth Road in Aidan/Conor Flynns house but I always remember that, in the house-headbang days, my hair would be all over the place before getting to the Grove.
Mel.
PS if any of the above-mentioned lads are reading this (or anyone else was involved that I've ommitted), please comment or send me a PM.

Hey Stevie,
Happy birthday!!
I lived about 20 doors down from the Purcells - the Purcells I hung out with were Ronan and Emmet - dont really remember a Vivienne Purcell tho' - prob. more than one Purcell clan on the avenue, or just my dodgy memory not remembering!
Are you able to get to the reunion in October Stevie, we can toast our birthdays together!

If that was along by the cottages in Killester then, sadly, I was talking about him alright. OMG, I cant believe it. He used to be a regular grove-mate of mine on a Saturday night. What happened to him, Breda?? Send me a PM maybe?

Anyone remember "Hijaks" - I think thats how it was spelt. Basement under Pizzaland in O'Connell Street. Drinking crap wine or jugs of sangria breathing in the fragrent air.... Then heading to the Grove

Hey Kay,
I dont think I met Ronan's wife. Well, to be honest, I cant recall.
I hung around with Ronan, Emmet and some of the other lads on Brookwood Avenue in the years before, and just as, we were starting to go down to the Grove.

I just read this thread coz mel opened it again, I can't believe Andy is dead??? sh*t no way!! Mel, Jim Punch lived in their house for a while did he not. James Hackett was his mate! Andy was a nice guy and another real Hawkwind fan. I'm pretty shocked.

I was pretty shocked when I heard the news too Colum. A lovely guy and another Grove fanatic (I'd say he would have loved coming back to the reunions if he was still with us!). You're right that Jim stayed in his house for a while alright!

It was an interesting stroll up from the Nep as well
Outside, there were a bunch of some seriously dodgy skobies drinking cans and shouting at each other in what passes for conversation in knackerville
Then we had the nine cop cars with sirens chasing some fella on a motor bike - the coppers were miles more dangerous than one bike
Then we had the tour of dublin's cash points to arm the ladies with money for drink and taxis
Then the purchase of tickets from some youngfella who had been let down by his mates

Surprised there was nothing on the news about that Chase. Never seen the like before. And cheers to Whipper & CP for the atm escort. (was really getting worried with so many out of service).
Nep sounds good to me. Though I heard when we were in there on Sunday that in addition to the Comedy night on Fridays they're starting to do singersongwriter nights on some Sat nights and charging to go downstairs!!! We may need Star & Gary to run them off . We can always ring and check before we finalise on a date.

Nep is a great venue, I think it is the most central so why not. The Malahide gig was good too getting that snug at the front and Pete can go next door for his coke as well.

just doing another *bump* to this thread again. Any pre-grove "rituals" that you and your mates engaged in before you went down (your house, the park, the pub etc.,) and funny stories you can relate in relation to them?

a gang of us used to always meet in the Plough, and get pissed before getting a bus back to Raheny,so we were more than ready to dive into the"mosh"when we arrived at the Grove,l enjoyed that more than knacker drinking,l suppose it was having part time jobs,we could afford a few pints.

Rituals before meeting up these days?
Well, first I beg and plead on bended knee for permission to go out then I hope that nothing goes pearshaped to prevent it then I put my kids to bed and face the "Why are you going out Daddy? Why won't you stay here? It's not fair" as I put the eldest to bed then I leg it to the pub
I'd say that's a fairly common ritual - except in Bluebell's case the questioning is continued by mobile phone

I really enjoyed having a few beers in the Shieling before we went into the "Grove" at the reunions there. There was a very easy-going atmosphere in that place, I felt, and you could feel the anticipation building before we all headed inside. Admittedly, I only went to two reunions in the Shieling (Halloween and Christmas 2006) but I really liked that place for its pre-Grove ritual get-together...shame its gone..

Bruns,l agree with u on that, its not easy to get a venue where u can have a beer in the bar before heading in,in a good atmosphere.when me and the mates went to the button factory,we used to drink elsewhere before heading to the reunion,l didnt mind, but l used to enjoy the convenience of the Shieling, and l was a barman there years ago,l never thought l'd see it gone, but l have good memories from it

The great thing about the Sheiling was that it wasn't too hard to tear yourself away from the bar to go in. You could head the music, and you saw the people passing, so you knew when it was time to start making tracks to the ballroom. If you were across the road even (good spot the Cedars) or worse still a bit of a stroll away, it can quickly become "just one more, just one more. Before you know it half the night was lost.

I remember well my first re-union. I had been on the site a few weeks and didn't know what anyone looked like and it was pre tee shirts as well --so I hadn't a clue who I was looking out for.
I felt the same, as I'm sure Gay people feel in a new pub. Trying to get eye contact without getting eye contact if you follow ??
