Okay..I haven't posted a new topic in a while..and I don't think anyone's done this before...

So what would your favourite top 5 albums of all time be? In no particular order..and across all genres..

Then maybe if we get enough posts eventually somebody can collate it and produce a definitive Grove Social Club Top 5 Album List.....either ways..be another way to get some good recomendations...

So to start the ball rolling... my top 5 (at the moment) would be

Abbey Road - The Beatles
OK Computer - Radiohead
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
IV (Runes) - Led Zeppelin
Songs for Swinging Lovers - Frank Sinatra

Well..was just trying to make it easier ...hehehe!! But I know what ya mean Rolo....anyway...that's what the edit button is for...can always go back and change your selection if someone mentions a CD and ya go..sh*t!! that should have been in my top 5...

And I'd forgotten about Hi Fidelity...they did something like this in it...great film actually..specially the ending...

Yeah HD have to agree. Think you said somewhere that the sound was kinda edgy. For me,that is the essence of Byrne and the Heads.

While the later stuff is still excellent, Fear of Music and Buildings and Food are just the business.

Funnily enough, wouldn't be a big Psycho Killer or Once in a Lifetime fan. Maybe that's a bit of Heads snobbery creeping in biggrin.

There's a song called " Cities " on Fear of Music, it's also on that live album.Really good.

Any other Magazine fans around ??????????Real Life

I think I have one of their LP's somewhere...the one with Song from under the floorboards...good band...Howard Devoto founded the Buzzcocks with Pete Shelley didn't he?

Don't know a whole lot about them ...but remember a pal of mine was big into them...must have a look for a CD or two...what would ya recommend?

He sure did HD, to quote Michael Caine " Not a lot of people know that ".

I've the Buzzcocks first EP, called Boredom, with Devoto on lyrics.

Either of the two albums above, Real Life or Second Hand Daylight are excellent. Floorboards is from their last studio offering, The Correct Use of Soap, which is also good. The only other Studio Album is Magic,Murder and The Weather which doesn't hit me the same way as the first two.

Would love to discuss the relative merit of these albums with someone as fans are somewhat thin on the ground these days.

Yeah I read that. U2 are splitting from their record company Island records. I think they were contracted to do 3 Greatest albums. This is the third I hope they don't repeat the tracks they have put on the last few Greatest hits albums. s for the DVD it has 10 live tracks from Milan but they are meant to be releasing that Full dvd too...

For a nice session of complete sing-along self-indulgence with no bad tracks, the ones that spring to mind in no particular order are:

Jethro Tull - Too Old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die

David Bowie - Diamond Dogs

Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen - not very grove-y but it's probably my favourite, most listened to album of all time - no clue why!

Moving Hearts - Moving Hearts (bought it in Golden Discs with no cover don't think it has a title - it's the one with Hiroshima Nagasaki,  No Time for Love etc

Nirvana - Never Mind

coming along in close...

DB - Hunky Dory, L&T of Ziggy Stardust, Floyd - Wish You were Here, Led Zep III, Pixies - Doolittle, Neil Young - After the GR and Harvest

The gig was moved from The Olympia to The Point....She had sold out so quickly....which was a bit of a bummer...the lack of accoustics in The Point ruined it for me...though saw her a few years back in her home town of Toronto....You should listen to "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" if you get the chance....

See, shoulda been a Top 10.

Just on Five Years, remember being on a religious retreat in school and being so bored that I wrote out all the lyrics. One of the lads in the class asked me if I'd written it myself. Course I had to pretend that I had.biggrin

LOL Rolo - fair play if you got the words right! I have to say I probably sing at least 50% of all DB songs phonetically! Don't even like reading the album covers cos sometimes the real words are a bit mundane ;)

Had a great time walking down to pub last night singin away to five years et al. Then did a bit of gardening this morning listening to Hunky Dory - I guarantee if anyone's feeling a bit crap putting "Fill your heart" on at full blast will banish the doldrums :D

D'ya know, there's not a bad song on that album. Everyone talks about Oh, You Pretty Things, Life on Mars and Changes but for me The Bewlay Brothers, Kooks and Andy Warhol are the best songs on it.

Prefer Ziggy Stardust though. Five Years and Sufragette City....Oh yeah !

Can never decide which album is favourite after Diamond Dogs - love that cos was reading 1984 at the time and couldn't believe all the references - learnt later that Diamond Dogs was written as a musical version of 1984 but the Orwell estate wouldn't give the rights. A bit much considering they seemed happy enough to let the Eurythmics have a go years later - or maybe it was statute barred or whatever at that stage?

And re Ziggy S what about R&R suicide - love howling along at the end of that :)

What I do remember seeing was ......Brotherhood of Man, The Nolan Sisters, Shawaddywaddy, The Gap Band(Oops upside your head), Top of the Pops 1- 20, K-Tel 1-30, The Wombles greatest hits, Daniel O'Donnell, etc. .....Am I missing something here?

Hi tmarie, it was a sad story, really: DB's brother was schizophrenic, he eventually killed himself by jumping in front of a train. It's an amazingly haunting track, and as for the ending...!

Would have some all time favourites but also have flavour of the month which currently is Paul weller Hit Parade and an old favourite rediscovered Bob Dylan Budokan which has been on player for last 24hours playing random and every single song is classic.

Think will stick Blonde on Blonde now which is another favourite for obvious reasons

Hey Blondie...in case you're interested..

was in HMV last night in Blanch and they have a whole heap of Dylan classic CD's in the sale...priced between 5.99 and 7.99 I think....and Virgin had one of those 3 CD box sets with 3 albums for 10.99 with three of his more recent offerings in it.

Was sorely tempted..but am trying to convince herself that we should buy the 32" LCD HD ready tv that LIDL and Aldi have for sale next Thursday...so need to rein in the spending..not doing well with that project at the moment tho..hehehe!!

Hey Pat, you got a gang of us into CCR in those days (and we were Quo rockers, to my shame). Great compilation album - Box set of Woodstock'69. It has everything for the discerning rocker.

Here's the rest of my top 5:

Aqualung,

Machine Head,

Zeppeling IV,

Pet Sounds.

MD,

I couldn't stick to five either. See above.

That's some list you have. I haven't heard of half them

Showing my age I guess. Know a lot of the names but never heard their music.

Would love to discuss the relative merit of these albums with someone as fans are somewhat thin on the ground these days.

Magazine, one of Britain’s most influential bands, are to reform for just two concerts in February 2009. Original members Howard Devoto, Dave Formula, Barry Adamson and John Doyle are to be joined by an as yet unnamed guest guitarist, to walk in the not inconsiderable footsteps of the departed, and sadly missed, John McGeoch.

It is the first time Magazine have played live together since 1980. They are to play The Forum, London on February 13th & The Academy 1, Manchester on February 14th. Tickets are on sale from September 15th.

Enduringly credible, Magazine have always been the connoisseur’s choice and have been frequently name checked by some of the most gifted musicians of recent years including Radiohead, Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker, U2 & Maximo Park. This year, NME.com included Magazine in a poll as one of the most influential bands of all time.

Magazine’s front man, Howard Devoto co-formed Buzzcocks with Pete Shelley after the pair had seen The Sex Pistols in early 1976 and promoted the now legendary Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall gigs. Devoto left in 1977, after the seminal “Spiral Scratch” EP had been released, and created Magazine. Their first record was the post-Punk anthem “Shot By Both Sides”.

Four ground breaking albums later and the band had parted company, leaving behind an influential body of work which was re-released by Virgin EMI last year to critical acclaim.

The concerts are being staged in association with The Gig Cartel and wire—sound and will be recorded for possible release later in 2009.

you might find someone there to discuss them with rolo!
