Hello all,
Everyone obviously has their favourite grove songs but if you had to pick just *one* (and only one) song that most reminds you of your Grove days, what would it be? For example, while it might not be my favourite song as such, when someone says something like "did you go to the Grove then?", the song that always springs to my mind is Layla by Derek and the Dominoes...
How about you!?

Well...can only be one..Stairway to Heaven...
In those days the Grove was the only place you were likely to hear it played except in the comfort of your own bedroom..(or in a guitar shop) and it happened to be my favourite song anyway. Plus the not inconsequential fact that I asked herself up to dance to that song and we then had it put on our wedding video...hehehe!!
So a lot of memories attached to it as I'm sure many a Grover has....

Black Betty. Without a doubt. Not,as you suggest,Mel,my favourite song, but you can't say 'The Grove' without immediately thinking of Black Betty.
I remember one of the first nights I went (in my less than hairy days) hearing the intro playing and suddenly all the heads rose to their feet,in a trance like state, like zombies coming from the grave.
Little did I know that would be me 'shaking my thing' before long.

So many great songs BUT the ones I remember were the ones that probably annoyed me or that I have strong associations with for example.......
"Teenage Kicks"....that was when all the docks came crashing down on my feet if I didn´t leg it fast enough to the compound. Phew..it could really get out of hand during that song.
"Come on Eileen"...that was the sign that the end was nigh, those merciless lights were going to come on any second and the beauts you were trying to impress or smooch would see the real YOU complete with red eyes, white face, black eyeliner smudged and the icing on the cake - the odd zit or two. The old Shree Indian scarf or the PLO came in handy then to bury your face in !!!!!

Hmmm still thinking of the song that reminds me of The Grove......
Rock Lobster is not my favourite but the Grove was the only place that played it and the reaction to it was great..

I've 4 songs.
1) Rock Lobster

and last but not least and really should be no 1
4) Black Betty
No Grove could be complete without any of these and particularly
Black Betty.

Quo's "Caroline" and "Mean Girl", Creedence "Bad Moon Rising", Neil Young "After The Goldrush", Bowie "Jean Genie", CSNY "Helpless", Led Zeppelin "Rock n' Roll" and of course Bitch "Good Time Coming", Doors "Eye Of The Sun"
Just a few. Like HD's thread of 5 favourite albums it's not easy to name one favourite song from the Grove.

In my never-ending quest for Grove singles, I ventured into Rhythm records on Aston Quay last week and picked up Bad Moon Rising in one of them "old gold" type pic sleeves for €2. It wasnt played during my era down at the Grove but a great song and just thought, ah sure Pat would want me to get it!!

For me the one song that instantly takes me right back to headbanging down the back is Rainbow - Since You Been Gone.
Other ones that really remind me of the Grove are Santana - She's Not There and Ram Jam - Black Betty...They were the big 3 for me, played every week. I suppose the connection is so strong cos I never heard them anywhere else (Except on my stereo of course ).

There's too many!!!!!
Black Betty is definately one, but there was Mama's Boys 'Needle in the Groove' and 'Why can't this be love' by Van Halen.
The Van Halen one reminds of a guy called Jeff Kissane, who I was going out with at the Grove, and then he emigrated to Australia!! I was devastated at the time, but thankfully, I've got over it.
By the way, I used to work in Shree. What a great way to meet men when you're single!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Irish Widow. Needle in the Groove by Mamas Boys - great song. Saw Mamas Boys do a small gig in a hotel in Bundoran in Donegal, when holidaying with friends in the 80s. Most of the crowd were middle-aged to oldish people, who didnt look too impressed with the music being played.

Pogue,
That's great. I saw it on your list a few months
back and I managed to listen to a studio version of
it a few weeks later. It's really evocative of the
folk scene back in the early 70s. On the studio
version which I heard there is a very nice tambourine
or percussive interlude as the song builds up.
Was he a one hit wonder ? Nice voice . nice soulful
lyrics!
By chance do you remember a place called the
"Universal folk club" in Dublin back in the 70s.
I remember my guitar teacher taking a bunch of
us down there when we were young. Was probably
one of my first experiences of a live venue and
it was intoxicating (in a good way!)

That's a great track. Summer of Love, etc. You can
hear the Elvis influences and even shades of the
Blues Brothers, soul/blues in there.
Pogue - You lived through a very interesting part of
Cecil's evolving musical tastes!

Hello Ian
Tim had a couple of hits. His other biggies were "Reason to Believe" and
"How can you hang on to a dream" and littler ones like "The Lady Came
from Baltimore". None monster hits, but a lot of folkies sang his songs.
I don't remember "Universal Folk Club". Back then we were heavily into
blues. Slattery's, Caple Street was the place to go on Wednesday nights.
Great shows organized by The Dublin Blues Society.
They kept advertising big names like Otis Span, and Howlin Wolf but
when you got there it was always Champion Jack Dupree. it became a
running joke. There were some great local bands. One skiffle group "The
Dirty Dozen " Is where Eamon Carr (Horslips) started on washboard,
before he learned how to play the drums. Fun times to think back on...I
think I was suicidal at the time.

I sure do monarch - I really liked that band. Have a good few ( bout 100) vinyl albums from back in the day - funnily, no savoy brown! - for various reasons hadn't played albums in a few years. Wife got me (yet another) record deck over Christmas. Pulled out a selection of records, started playing them ... None of the ones I picked out - about 10 of them - would play properly - skipping, sliding, awful crackles etc. Disappointed. Maybe I hadn't been storing them properly. This means either: major sadness, my records are dead; or: major opportunity, have to buy lots more new ones! I think I know which of those options is in the go ... Saw a goodish old-style punk band - Touts - supporting Paul Weller in the Olympia a few weeks back, might start with their album...hmmm ... new horizons opening... 😊

Hi monarch, I actually don't. Bit of a Luddite with some of the facilities available these days but your post inspiring me to "get" Spotify! I assume I just google it and follow instructions - I'll then look forward to checking out the playlist links you've so kindly sent, and many thanks for your thoughtful gesture.
What's happened with me and music in the last 10 or so years is that I've lost connections - just because of "life happening"etc, with some of the people who I would argue, discuss, and listen to music with, and therefore have become a bit (very?!) insular in my tastes. I can see being a part of this forum is going to make me get up off my ass - musically speaking - and get a bit more involved. Haven't put that very well but you know what I mean I'm sure. Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on...

Now I am spotified, monarch. Had a look at your current playlist (in your post few mins ago) - Jon spencer, traffic (yaaaaay!), Rory, philo, super stuff. Also quite a few I haven't heard of, or only dimly aware of. Very eclectic playlist, makes me feel like someone who fell asleep about 1978 and just woke up 10 minutes ago! 😬 See, this is what I mean ... Will explore your suggested playlists at my leisure when I get the chance later.
And many thanks. G.

Hi Frank, just been checking out one of the playlists you recommended in an earlier post - with Judy Tzuke, the damned (still prefer Paul and Barry ryan version lol) etc, etc, etc. Good jaysus, me head exploded couple of times, I''ll never get the toupee down off the ceiling! Spectacular, amazing, life-affirming stuff. Intended to listen to the whole thing, but got to track c. 238 and there's still more! Just to satisfy my curiosity - did you pull those playlists together yourself, manually? Or are they pre-prepared or what? Would like to pull a couple together if it's manageable by eejits like myself? Anyway, have had the best time all to myself for the past couple hours, will keep this going...
And thanks once again.

Frank is the main man on here for music and one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
A Grove legend.

Just re the Des Williams Spotify list - he invited people to throw in songs that he had forgotten on to the play list (I think I added about 7 or 8 and I know others contributed too. Don't know who exactly. Great playlist altogether though.

Sure is. I have got no further with listening to it yet. I had very quiet few days up to Tuesday so was able to indulge myself in all this stuff (hence my fingerprints all over the forums!) Things are, as expected, more back to normal now so distracted by day-to-day life! But will, for sure, carve out more hours for highly important music/Grove-y stuff lol!

Ah yeah - magic. The old grove was like a little private world for those of us privileged to be there - like a little Atlantis (but on dry land clearly ! ). The Paul's version came a little late for me, although I went a couple of times - but I'm sure you St. Paul's grovers felt exactly the same about Pauls, as I did about the "old" Grove ...

Sure I forgot - Friday is the weekend ! Had a go at about 10 mins of that link - magnificent stuff. Ace of spades a bit speedy to have with me cornflakes, milk all over the ceiling! AC/DC, Horslips - crikey ... need a 6-pack of Smithwicks (remember the little bottles) to do this justice! But the amazing thing - everyone looks so young; and (relatively) fit - including Cecil! But I suspect meself and Frank (monarch) are part of a dwindling old-grove gene pool lol! Didn't recognise anyone in the pix, but that's to be expected I guess. Our little gang from St Anne's was small enough in number, some sadly no longer with us ... But the sense of joy and excitement coming from the video is palpable ... Tremendous stuff ... To be continued ... Thanks again ...

Wow Peter, had a go at that whole video start to finish. What can I say - beautiful stuff. If you put a little mental filter on you can see everyone there 20+ years ago ( well I can - ok maybe it's the drink! ) but you know what I mean. And tracks by the Doors, I don't remember hearing them in the grove, prob after my time; but Doors have resonance for me. And Bowie of course ... I have my tickets already for the "Bowie alumni" gig next January ... Some would call it cashing in, but I don't care ... Did I see Gary nagle ( doishe's brother) in a couple of shots or that just trick of the light lol? Anyway a whole swoosh (sorry Nike) of memories invoked by that production. Just fabulous stuff...
