Does anyone have any memories from New Year's Eve at the Grove.

Remember all the ridiculous songs like Lily the Pink,All Around my Hat etc.that Cecil used to play for that night only.

Yea. I remember being outside, all in the gear, trying to get in on New Years, there were more people outside than there were inside. We gave up. What a DRAG!!!

One New Year, I think it was 1988 or 1989, I arrived a little later than expected. (Had lost my cache of bottles to a group of lads with tennis ball haircuts and an Aslatian). By the time I got there I had to take a long detour via the trench in front of the Vincentians' house, behind the prefabs, and from there on to the new extension where the new sports extension and toilets had been added. I was probably seen by the bouncers, who were firemen or Gardaí, but they must've recognised my trenchcoat and turned a blind eye. (Despite fire, health and safety concerns they knew that I didn't take up much space). I climbed into one of the cubicle windows, head first into a guy on his knees throwing up, and had to be "helped" in the whole way, getting smeared with the contents of his stomach whilst catching and ripping my coat in the window and being banged off every sharp corner imaginable. Of the people who I met they thought that someone had started on me. And yes, at the slow set I was in no mood for Tarzan-type hunt, had no self-respect and tried the "wounded puppy" thing but the smell of someone else's peuk was too overpowering for me to even face close proximity to myself let alone showing my war wounds to anyone else. Still though, there was always something memorable about the New Year Groves (which, unlike Hallowe'en Groves, didn't entail large numbers of Cureheads all reaching the same conclusion that a piece of white cardboard would transform them into Dermot Morgan's Father Trendy from the Live Mike show).

Lenny,

You're right, that was the hold hands carry on at twelve o'clock wasn't it.

We were at it in 79 - 85 , glad to see the tradition was carried on.

Was Cecil still playing Lily the Pink and All Around my Hat in 1990 -1995.

Lenny I keep meaning to reply to this - now are ya kidding about not knowing Lily the Pink - ya know:

We'll drink a drink a drink

To Lily the Pink the Pink the Pink

The saviour of the human race

For she invented medicinal compound

Most efficacious in every case........ and so on

All around my hat!

All around my hat I will wear the green willow
All around my hat for a twelvemonth and a day
And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearing it
It's all for my true love who is far, far away....... and off ya go...

Ring any bells! How young are you anyway! feckin whipper snapper

Just resurrecting an old thread or two...

Wasnt New Years Eve one of the nights you just made sure you got there early for...everyone (absolutely everyone) used to try and get in on New Years Eve.  I dont think I ever missed one when I went down (but I did miss out one Halloween, in fancy dress).

Lily The Pink and All around my hat were classics from the night alright Rolo!  Did he still play the other Christmas classics on that night as well (Wizzard, Slade, that Mike Oldfield thingy)?

I only got to one New Year's eve grove  cos it was impossible to get a taxi home on that night and no-one would give us a lift.....you lot didn't know just how lucky you were living within walking distance ( or should I say staggering distance ) from the grove.

Agree Bluebell, but look at it this way, weren't you also extremely fortunate too.

Wouldn't reckon that there were too many other regular Grovers from your part of the country .

Only other person I knew from the Navan Road that went to the Grove was a guy called Manus Bray, I think GG is related to him through marriage.

Who would have thunk it??? Coincidence or wha???

New Year's Eve Groves were F.A.B.-as I metnioned in the Best memories thread,I loved them.ALWAYS seemed to be a good vibe-everyone in good mood and a REAL sense of ringing in the new year together.

AND if you were single, there was always a new years kiss not far away...

Indeed, New Years kisses of course, a nice way to start a chat with someone you fancied, wasnt it?
