Just been reminded of embroidery and patches......

YES.....indeed....

what about the writing of the groups/bands names on the school bags ????!!!!!

Remember the Khaki satchel type bags - green or yellow with the long straps.

Remember digging out a good black marker and then hoisting the bag up onto the dining room table and digging out the Albums and commencing the work of art !!

Your favourite group had to take pride of place across the front of the bag so you had to think long and hard about that one.....had to get the spacing right or you would run out of bag !! had to get it straight too.

You would also HAVE to get the writing exactly right, size, shape etc so as not to loose face at school.

There were some really hard ones to copy like the ...

FLEETWOOD MAC logo....

....others were easier like Genesis...stick style print.

THE DOORS WAS ODD...particularly the "s".....

Then, you might print a couple of perceived cool quotes on the sides of the bags and get them wrong....for example....one poor creature in my class wrote, from a famous Neil Young lyric.....

" every Junkie LIKES a setting sun " !!!!!!!

instead of....

"every Junkie is LIKE a setting sun " !!!!!

funny..conjures up images of hippies heading to Howth Heath or Dollier to watch the setting sun !!!!!!.

what about the CND stickers and the Greenpeace ones !!!!!.

Spill the beans on those creative experiences of yours.....

how many bags did you go through during your formative muscial years ????

Later,

Mins.

Nice post Mins-yeah-spent ages doing that bloody 'Boston' spaceship on my denim-took the whole summer nearly.

Only to find Jim from Clontarf did the same thing (Mel-remember him-used to play the game with you...looked uncannily like Liam O'Maonlaoi)

And yes,the bag,did a pretty cool Santana from the Moonflower album,if i do say so myself.

At school, myself and Simon Delaney (now a mover and shaker on the TV and stage) used to 'decorate' everybody elses school journal and khaki type bag in return for lunch snacks, crisps and even homework!

Hi Mins,

Good post. I used to embroider my bag, jacket, jeans - anything I could find with every band I liked. My mam used to go mental cos I couldn't sew a button.

Could'nt draw tho. Had to get somebody else to draw and I would embroider.

I'd forgotten about that

Mins if you knew Limewood there were a good Grove contingent in there, Lar Lesley, the McDarbys, Peter Mannion (RIP) and another load of guys & girls, that was a Grove stronghold! Manys the night ended up in Clayton Burkes big house behind Limewood after the Grove.

Hi Fester,

I actually bought a house in Limewood around 2000 so I didn´t know many by name from Limewood during the Grove days but I bet I knew them to see.... I would have been coming from the Raheny Road direction.......long walk..good exercise........

The only family I knew that were Grovers were the Donnellys....

I did go to a bit of a shin dig in a house right opposite the entrance to Limewood once, on Tonlegee Road and they were all Grovers there.....

It really is a small World....I am amazed whereever I go who knows who and that is outside Ireland.....

You always have to be on your toes and watch the gob when you speak in case you put the foot in it.....

Hasta Pronto,

Mins.

The very same...used to be quite pally at school (he was a lot thinner then!) and I'm really looking forward to that Bachelors Walk special-a funny and humourous 'believeable' drama/comedy.

Yeah, Jim Punch was his name.  Actually got to know him when I started asking him about who did the embroidery on the back of his jacket!?  Dont remember what the answer was though.  Surprised he isnt a frequent poster on here actually..then again, maybe he is (incognito!) - you out there Jim?

Hiya,

I had a pair of black jeans . Down the left leg was the man with the stick from Led Zep album and on the other leg was embroidered names of Pink Floydd, Deep Purple, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeath.

I had a light army jacket and that had numerous Zep badges, some collectors that i saved up for etc.

I was and am a major Zep fan so most of the stuff on my clothes was to do with them.

Mel might remember Kevin Sweeney (Hi Kev if your out
there), summer 1982, it was Kev that created a denim
jacket with the Boston logo embroidered on the back, it
was more than a logo it was a fairly good reproduction
of the album cover of Boston’s 1st album.

You might also remember that kev later embellished
another jacket with a copy of the cover of Led Zeps “The
Song Remains the Same” album. For those who don’t
remember it was the album with the cinema on the cover,
which now features on all the Zep promotional stuff.

I had a go at doing my own jacket, but the project
was short lived, after one very successful slow set I
put my jacket down on one of the seats on stage, only to
find it gone (pinched) a few minutes later.

Me and Kev had been friends at school, and started
going down to the grove 80/81, Jim much younger than us,
joined later at end of 81. In those days we knew Mel to
see, a grove veteran even then. It was Kev’s jacket (Jim
wearing it at the time) that caught his attention. Jim
went on to produce his own version. I’ve attached a copy
of an old grainy photo, taken back in 1985 with Jim
showing of the jacket. If I remember at the time we
we’re heading up to Mel’s front room for a Saturday
afternoon session of D&D, cigarettes and pizza from the
chippy at the back of Mel’s.

If kev or Jim are out there drop us a line, haven’t
seen either of you for nearly 20 years now, it would be
nice to know how you’re getting on. Mel sorry for not
being able to make it last time we arranged a meet,
maybe I’ll catch the next reunion.

Bye for now.
Tony

Fair play Tony - great to see you on here!  Also, thanks for the background about the jacket embroidery!  I agree with Tony, Jim or Kev - if you're out there, give us a shout!  That photo really takes me back, Tony!!

Edit: I wonder is that Boston jacket the one that "Hairy" (Paul) wears now?

Mel, I think the one "Hairy" (Paul) has is Kev's jacket, I remember Kev gave it to him at some time, Jim's was a close copy but he added the Rainbow logo.

If you remember Jim was a big Ronnie James Dio and Rainbow fan.

I particularly liked the typescript from Queen's second album Queen II which I had emblazoned all over my school copies.

I remember my good history teacher - nicknamed 'Hector' - peering over my shoulder one day and asking me ...

'What is the meaning of this?'

A very philosophical question indeed!!!

Any answers??
