Does anybody remember the dance routine that went on during New Orders Blue Monday??? Something like 2 hops on one foot, switching to 2 hops on the other, then single hop each foot before turning 90 degrees and repeating the whole thing again. Or something to that effect

That dance sounds very organised altogether Flumphert....
In my day ( as I lean on my Zimmerframe ) there was nothing too noticeable going on.... there were those awkward songs that you didnīt know which way to go and what to do.....for example... Bohemian Rhapsody Hands up here..who found that one a tad taxing ???? Started off as a perfect slowey, nice and long too to get the mood going and then BONGO...it speeds up and and you have a choice to: (A) peel away and start headbanging, mega depended on the partner for that one cos you had to come back to the slowey at the end of the song, ....OR (B) speed things up slightly, net result your slowey turning into something more resembling a foxtrot whilst you were whiling away the minutes til the tempo went back to the slowey again. (C) muttering a thanks and a see ya, cringing as you did, knowing you FAILED the test of " Conquering Bohemian Rhapsody". I love that song BUT I hated it played at the Grove for that reason alone.....got me into all sorts of sticky situations ( not in the literal sense now, donīt be rude !! ). Someone else I think Fester mentioned American by Simple Minds that it was hard to dance to that one without looking like a total gobsh*te. I echo that !! spot on......well said !

I think I remember seeing guys walking to the grove in a similar fashion!!! Now don't take this the wrong way guys but I think it was more a modern day thingy. Looking at everyones Grove attendance, you were all headbanging in the donkeys years ago days! I was merely just an early 90's kinda Grover. But I swear to god, during Blue Monday there was a dance that a few of the girlies and the very odd guys actually done. And it was quite disturbing. Almost as if they went into a trance for the whole duration of the song. Good job Cecil never played the 4 hour long 12" extended version!!!

Dont recall the Blue Monday dance but always smile when Rock Lobster by the B52's comes on the radio, anyone else remember the circle of blokes (it was always blokes) flat on their backs and kicking the legs in the air for that one in a "humourous" lobster impression? Funny how things stick in your head but apart from that Simple Minds track (The American) the other in-between-speed (not fast not slow) song that was hard to shake a leg to was Paul McCartney "No more lonely nights", remember it was first song played after midnight on a New Years Eve Grove once (maybe 84/85) and everyone was a bit puzzled as to whether to try and grab a victim for a slow set or do a kind of half shuffle till the guitar solo!  |

I remember that one VERY well....that was 100% sloweee, for me anyhow and a smoochy one at that.....by the time that guitar solo came around we were well on the way altogether to business of the monkey kind.. In my day ( as I grab for the oxygen mask this time )...in my day he played that quite a bit.....yep had forgotten about that one but now that you mention it...I liked it.....

My memory has completely blotted out some incidents at the Grove I think - either that or I was completely hammered a lot of the time (come to think of it, both of those statements are true). I dont really remember that rock lobster dance Fester. 'No more lonely nights'? hmmm. Well its just a strange thing. I'm 29 this Sunday and feeling a tad bit on the elder side. But when I buzz onto the Grove website I don't feel like an elder at all!!! Now once again don't take this in a bad way. I mean it in a way that you guys were all at the Grove in the late 70's to late 80's. I on the other hand was there in the early 90's. You guys probably had more of the Bowie, Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Free, Fleetwood Mac etc. etc. tunes going on. Whereas when I went Cecil also played that stuff AND the likes of Pantera, Alice In Chains, Faith No More, GN'R, Rage Against The Machine etc. That is why all of a sudden I feel like the kid of this forum!! Am I balencing on a thin line???

Tried to post 4 times and my laptop got jammed..... anyhow.... YES havenīt heard of a few of them myself Flumphert and I ainīt exactly at the Free Travel Pass stage myself... amazing how Music passes from one generation to the next. Saw a Daddy and Son at that Fish gig I went to recently and I just thought " nice ". Both were not out of place. I frequently have a proud parent moment when in the midst of all the hip hop, Hilary Duff junk coming from my daughtersī bedroom, I then hear one of them singing along to Deep Purple,Yes or even a Talking Heads track. Hey Flumphy, don't mind those old codgers. Cecil has been known to spin Alice in Chains, Rage Against The Machine, Faith No More and defo Guns n' Roses at several Reunions. Not sure about Pantera. You'll hafta ask Lenny 3 Fingers about that. No sign of QOTSA, System of a Down or Evanescence though. |

Ah now come on. QOTSA, SOAD & Evanescence are all pretty recent. As in after 1997. Although I hafta say a bit of SOAD wouldn't go astray. But I do hafta hand to Cecil. At the last reunion night he played Kings Of Leon. I was shocked to say the least. But you see if he goes playing anything from after the Grove ended, it isn't really the Grove then is it??? I would absolutely kill for him to play Pantera's Walk though. That opening riff on a massive speaker is mindblowing! |

Don't remember the Blue Monday dance but I certainly remember the Rock Lobster one....and many a time it wasn't just a few weirdos but almost the entire hall on the ground in the "Rock the Boat" formation doing the Lobster thing and then at the end you'd get up as far as your knees and go mental head banging...of course I only joined in during my "Younger" days at the Grove... Then I got "Too Cool"

Don't think this "dance" was to Blue Monday. Although, I do seem to recall some people doing a similar routine to Stand by REM in the late 80's. There was certainly some type of hopping from foot to foot and then jumping 90 degrees to do it all over again, and waving of arms throughout. Didn't get involved myself - looked rougher than a mosh with all those arms flying about!

Don't remember the Blue Monday, but does sound very like Stand by REM. If you look at the video for Stand they perform the dance that we were trying to copy. Other than that it was just moshing, headbanging or rock lobstering ! |
