New topic time....maybe.....

Missed Opportunities .....

Anyone ever rub shoulders wit anyone famous like ????

Did ye get a chance to grab the sweaty towel or empty water bottle that was hurled from the stage onto the crowd....what about those much hoped for drum sticks, quick scrawl on a programme or album cover ????

Did you ever manage to touch, grab or get an autograph.

I did once only I got the wrong autograph....

Year: 1981.

Place: RTE 2 ..tiny studio then...

Why: Won a competition on Youngline.

HOW: Correctly guessed some regīs of commercial aircraft ( Bizarre).

Prize: Trip on a 767 to Amsterdam...( still recovering from the excitement of it all ).

Image: I hadnīt developed one then. There were signs though......

Pageboy ( bowl ) haircut, cord dungarees ( half mast of course - we all shared clothes then...the "handmedown syndrome" ),t-strapped patten shoes and check shirt -little lean towards future Big County adoration.

Anyhow I am digressing.....

Point is..

When I came on the show to talk about the above heart stopping trip to land of Tulip unt Veed, there were 2 other guests on show.

1. Johnny Logan...singing " Whatīs Another Year " BIG Euro Winner right......AND a new band debuting their single "Another Day"......yep.

2.U2.

Anyway, hands up please... whoose autograph do you think I went for ?.....

Yep I did..still have it !!

Johnny ( on a printed script from the show )....

Tee Hee.

Any takers for " Idiot of the Month" ?????

Please, I would be willing to pass my crown on......

< name="AdsSignaller">if(document.body){document.body.off_complete = "yes"; window.status = "off_end"; window.status = ""} You never know do you? I remember U2 playing Dandelion Market and Belfield Bar - just another band, nothing to get worked up about at that time. So plenty of potential and opportunities out there for all up and coming hopefuls.

Johnny Logan, by the way, is now doing the rounds of German folk musik programmes - (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) - saw an ad for an Advent / Christmas programme tomorrow morning on ZDF at 11am (10am Irish time)!!

He's following in the footsteps of Chris Norman (Smoky), Roger Whittaker, Nana Maskouri ...

I'd have a few autographs picked up over the years, mainly sports stars but a few rockers, Philo, Geldof, Horslips and one or two others.

My parents met Eric Clapton in a hotel in Galway when I was about 17 and my mam asked him to sign something saying " Our son would die if he knew we'd met you and we didn't get an autograph "

Clapton said " What, your son's died and you want me to write something for his gravestone or something ? "

Who was it said " E.C. is God " ?

Mins -  I'm going for idiot of the month too.

Many years ago a friend of mine Simon, took me with him to dinner at his teacher Don Moxham's place - in Mt. Temple school.

Sitting having dinner chatting to a nice lad sitting beside me wearing the coolest white leather jacket I'd ever seen. He tells me he's a drummer in a band. I'm telling him how my friend Simon is the best drummer EVER.

Oh, and by the way whats his name and what's the name of his band??

...........

"Larry" he says casually.

"and the band" I ask.

"U2"

wanted to go home then. Didn't even ask for his autograph, I felt so stupid. Simon kicks me under the table and says don't talk for the rest of the night!!!!

U2 played (with Stryder) a gig in St Brendans School Hall (near Artane church) after one years "Summer Project" - 1976ish??  Cant remember exact year but U2 were just starting out - I didnt stay for the music; I collected a prize for the "Chess" competition and was brought home, since my Mam and Dad were heading off.  All my mates got to stay

Also I remember one summer afternoon, was heading home down Grafton Street, one Saturday afternoon, with my then girlfriend (1982-1983?) when we passed this long haired guy in denims and his other half.  It was only when we were past them, that me and Siobhan (a different Siobhan, not my wife) turned to one another and said "Jeez, that was Francis Rossi (of Quo!).  We decided not to annoy them!

Welcome back Delia....

Yep, maybe I have been going a little OTT on the posting...seem to be on a roll...must be getting into the Christmas spirit....sorry if I am boring the hell out of some people...anyhows.....

You met a few creatures alright...

Aside from my brush with Johnny, have bumped and passed by a few...some quite sad and others well.. ( sorry non Grove related here ).

I did a wee stint with Aer Lingus in my day so had brief enoucounters with....

Jim Kerr.
Jason Patric ( after himself and Julia Roberts fled here to escape her forthcoming marriage to Kiefer Sutherland ).
Had Cherīs passport in my hand at Heathrow Airport whilst we were waiting for her at the First Class area...never got to meet her though..went on a break instead !!
Heather Mills McCartney...wonīt say anything about her...better not.
Sean Connery..gorgeous...another fab. Scot.

Michael Flateejit...have some SAD shots with him at a VIP do in Wembley. Cringe...was pregers at the time so I looked ill which didnīt help.

Waved and screamed at Nelson Mandela as he was leaving a hotel here in Madrid.
I told all my kids to wave and clap like crazy. They wanted to know why at the time and were quite frightened at the way I jumped up and down.

Passed through a revolving door of a hotel in NYC anti clockwise as you do and guess who was coming out clockwise...George Clooney...needless to say I stayed put revolving in the door for sometime...shocked.

Was recovering in a hotel health club after a wedding..had got no sleep and the kids at this stage were up and wanting a swim. I had to don a white bath robe, sit on a lounger with a throbbing head, furry tongue, blisters in my feet, 12 hour make-up caking on my face and best was the fake tan that was now looking like muck, all over my body. As they swam and screamed and the heat of the indoor pool finally got too much, I decided I needed to shift and get some fluids in fast. I whirled around and did a kind of a retch and who was there on the rowing machine behind me - Pierce Brosnan. Morto.

Met Mary McAleese ( stop the lights Maura ).. at a do in Mexico City. Yeeeeeeeeeeehhhhha.

The cream de la cream would have to be the NYears bash I attended that was attended also by Posh and Becks two years ago in Madrid. They were surrounded by their bodyguards. Their eldest boy was running around loose with a toy car and that attracted my son who is the same age. It was quite funny as my little guy had just got the number 2 blade on the hair and their little chap obviously had just be scalped also. They looked very similar. Same shirts and chinos also. Many times the bodyguards were doing double takes and rushing after mine inside of little Mr important...it was funny...

I am sure there were more encounters with creatures.
Would like to have met or meet more Rock Stars..

Maybe one day..............

I have to mention this on behalf of the missus. About 5 years ago, she was attending/hosting a business function in Johannesburg. Nelson Mandela was the guest of honour. She said it was amazing the energy and charisma that Madiba had in visiting everyone. He made a point of talking to her "What are you doing here, my dear? You should be at school." What a compliment to be paid after so many years of marriage, to which she replied " Will you organise with my boss to pay for it?" end of conversation. She is thrilled about the encounter and should have included it in her book. Maybe in the sequel.

The only famous person I remember meeting was Brian Harvey from East 17....before they kicked him out !!!! We were at a christmas party in the Westbury Hotel and the band were staying there. They were having a drink beside us in the bar and me in my drunken state asked him for his autograph and then he threw in a kiss for me cos I was so nice....Ahhhh.
I got a wave from Jack Charlton in Easons bookshop last year....but I didn't really meet him.....Oh and I spoke to Nancy Griffith when I asked her if she wouldn't mind HD getting a photo taken with her.......and we have the photo to prove it

Would've met a few sports " stars " over the years.

Don't know if any of yiz remember the uproar caused when there was a report of several members of the Irish soccer team being involved in a sing song in their hotel in Stuttgart following the 1-0 defeat to Germany last September.

Hafta admit participation in said sing song ...............but confirm the photos published in the Star and The Herald were not mine. We were asked by the players not to take any photos and agreed not to. Obviously someone else was not as obliging.

Herself's best claim to fame is having been asked to sing on stage with Gabrielle ( she of the black eye patch ) a few years ago. She's met with the band having got chatting to them after a show in Dublin one night and was put on the guest list for the following night. Half way through the set she's asked up on stage to help with the backing vocals one one of the songs.

Other than that, actor Liam Cuningham's young fella is in my fella's class in school, Roddy Doyle drinks in HBs sometimes,as did Brian O'Driscoll for a while, had a few drinks with Brian Kerr ( ex Irish soccer manager ), Tony O'Donoghue ( RTE Sports reporter ) and Ray ( who put the ball in the English net ) Houghton after a match in Basle in 2004,met Michael Flatley and Paul Brady in the Irish Embassy in Moscow before a match in 2002................

Nowhere near as smart as Nelson Mandela, Oasis or George Clooney but a bit of fun nonetheless.

Oh yeah Anne Doyle,RTE Newsreader was at my 40th birthday party Woo Hoo.biggrinbiggrin

At a corporate golf tournament in South Africa we had the pleasure of Amy Kleinhuis (spelling?), the first non-white miss S.A., to open the event. It was freezing morning in June in the exposed Western Transvaal and she was dressed in a fetching, though skimpy outfit and stilletoes. She traipsed across the 18th green in said stilletoes to present to pennant to the various fat cats, I mean our clients.

When this was over I went over to chat her up, ask her for her autograph and received a kiss as a bonus. I floated around the course.

Had a great thrill last year. My employer (a famous bank) was hosting the 6-nations and offered to donate money to selected charities in which the staff are involved. I was selected due to my fundraising for the Irish Guide Dogs. We had a cosy breakfast in Morrision's hotel with Keith Wood and had our photos taken with the great man. What a gent and a fantastic sport. I had my 6-nations jersey signed by Woodie and Malcolm O'Kelly (I'll never wash it). Lots of other Leinster players also pitched up on the day - Girvan Dempsey and Shane Jennings. Great craic. Don't miss it next year if they have it.

Ah Mins - I actually forgot about Jim Kerr - I met him briefly but spoke to him numerous times on the phone (all through work).

In my previous posting I mentioned a boy and girl band - not mentioning now - anyhows - one lad from the boy band went out with a girl from the girl band - the lads being Irish and the girls being English - get my drift, well they were in the office and the lads were upstairs with the boss and I was thrown down to reception to look after the girls !!! They asked me to make them tea - well I lie - they told me to make them tea - so I did - they never thanked me for it - so this is going on and on for about 10 cups of tea - one of the girls was a rude so and so - looking me up and down from head to toe and in that bloody awful accent tells me to make her another cuppa - so I did !!!!!!!!!!!!!! But where did the tea bag come from !!!!!!!!!!! It was lying in the bin covered in cig ash - I handed her the cuppa and she slurped it and thanked me and said it was the nicest cuppa she had tasted - well by Christ I nearly fell off the chair - I had to run downstairs and nearly puked - God that was awful - but I had a laugh over it.

Nowdays though I just socialise an drink with Podge and Rodge !! Well not really but they drink in my local in the back arse of Meath !!

Ok, here's mine. What I can remember right now, anyway.

ON my confirmation day, we went to a Chinese restaurant behind the Westbury hotel (something Garden, me thinks). Anyway, having dinner and my da goes, "oh my god, there's Billy Joel". Look over and sure enough, Billy Joel is having his dinner.  My da sends me over and being 12, I went and asked for an autograph. He said he was eating and would talk to us later.  I went back to my table, thoroughly disappointed (honestly thought he was being kind of a jerk at the time but in hindsight, how annoying must I have been interrupting his dinner!) We really didn't think he would say anything to us but sure enough, after he and his friend paid their check, he came right over to our table and sat down to chat for a few minutes. He asked me about my confirmation and asked did the bishop still slap your face wehn you are being confirmed. I said no and so he lightly slapped my face!  Needless to say, got his autograph, and my picture taken with him (he's a little fella!!!)  He was a true gentleman and absolutely made one little girls day!!!

Hmmm, what who else . . . nothing as long as the last story but here's a few more names.

Roger Moore, Gabriel Byrne, Eamon Dumphy, Brendan Grace, Larry Mullen, Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, (met U2 in Jury's hotel in Cork when they were on their Joshua Tree tour, four more true gentlemen!!!), Danny Glover.

I think that's it, maybe more will come to me later.

Went to Johnny Cookes Restaurant in South William Street for a birthday meal with Mrs Fester a few years ago, any of you been there would know it was very intimate (cramped) seating.  Two vacant tables either side of us, John Hurt & girlfriend turned up as we had our starters and sat at one table, then the Edge and girlfriend turned up and sat at the other!  They all knew each other and were yapping across us for about ten minutes, then the Edge twigged that they were being a bit rude, got the 4 of them moved, and sent us over a bottle of champers, nice birthday that was! Hic!

Back in the Leeson Street days I was home for aholiday and sitting at a
bar
of a small club named Suzy Street. Slow night ...Only myself and this tiny
American woman sitting across from me, very cute I thought but I'm a
very
shy loser and would not be able to think of a pickup line if my life
depended
on it. She looked kinda familiar but a lot of American women do. Finally
she
nodded and gave me a hi and we had a bit of chitchat mainly about
Dublin
and the States. Nothing happened and we parted ways.

I opened the paper the next morning and whose pic do I see?--Nanci
Griffith was in appearing in Dublin. I love Nanci Griffith and could not
believe I would not recognise her in person. She just seemed like a tiny
little friendly American.
I cried for a month. It still bothers me a little why Nanci Griffith would be
sitting alone at a bar around four in the morning. American body clock i
suppose.

...actually it still bothers me why I would be sitting alone at a bar at four
in the morning

Hmmm, I managed to collect a few bits and pieces over the years:
Nicko McBrain's (Iron maiden) drumstick
Kerry King's (Slayer) guitar plectrum
John Connelly's (Nuclear Assault) plectrum
I still have all my old gig tickets, many of which were autographed.
There is more stuff in my parents that I can't remember!

I met many people such as
Philo (on Sutton Strand),
Brian Downey (who hasn't?)
Jim Martin (Faith No More) on Dame St.,
Mordred (myself and a few others spent the day with them in McGons and got credit during their gig that night).
Alice In Chains
and the most famous of them all DJ Cecil Nolan

I spent a number of years working in the Yacht and I met loads of Irish 'celebrities' but nobody is really interested in them (one notable encounter was Jonathan Phiblin Bowman getting snotty with me and being promptly put in his place)!

I have another couple of noteworthy (to me) events.

I was lucky enough to be invited to act as steward at the Irish Golf Open in 1980. My host (who was a member of Portmarnock) and I went into the clubhouse for a pint during our break. Greg Norman and Bernhard langer were propping up the bar. Standing beside them we felt like Lilliputians. My friend said, in his quasi Aussie drwal, to Norman "yer round, mate". Norman just looked down with a sneer and went back to his pint. What's smaller than Lilliputians?

Also luck to get invited to see Lenny Henry's one man show at the Liberty Hall theatre last year. It was absolutely hilarious and very clever. More than stand-up, more like a one-man play. After the show my host wanted to say hi to him in his dressing room. I said "what?". " Yea" says he, " I know him well" So off we trot into the dressing room and had a great chat with the big man.

For about a month I worked in a bar/restaurant called The Market Street
Exchange here in Cleveland . Its claim to fame was that Elliott Ness had been
a regular and three bullet holes behind the bar (not connected I would
imagine).
One night John Glenn arrived with a big entourage and before eating they
stopped for a talk and a drink at the bar. Everything was too formal for me to
intrude. Leaving for their table one of Glenn's boys handed me a wad of cash.
About a weeks wages...I always voted for Glenn after that.

It was a fab job. I loved every minute of it.

I left to have Sophie and then I became ill around 3 months after the birth and then was sick for the whole of the rest of the year.

Had to let them give my job up cos I had no idea how i would react to meds etc.

It was the best job i =ever had and I have fantastic memories. Loved it big time.

Sorry to hear that you were so sick after having Sophie....must of been hard for you been a first time mum and not feeling well. As for your job, well in a few years time when Sophie is older , you can always go back to work.

Ok,

Please don't all shout at me but...I'm catching up since christmas and thought this was a lovely thread........but...

this old timer thought it was something different i.e. missed oppportunities with grove attendees i.e. the what if's about the guy you saw and never talked to  etc etc. ok obviously by the content I'm totally off the mark so will leave you guys to it regarding meeting the 'stars' - - have enough of that and don't rate it.

cheers

Jackie

Ah Steve Staunton was up in our local (yes Morans!) - He was launcing a new football pitch which our team got donated to them by a very nice local - 6 acres plus 300k for a club house - nice or what !  So after the launch - the lads took him up to our local for a pint - he was grand - didnt mind the lads bringing their kids into the pub and getting photos or anything.  I couldnt have cared less - I was only too happy that the club has a pitch !  Go Donacarney Celtic
