Agree Gary, lived three minutes walk away, remember it too well also.
Thankfully was too young and not into that kind of music or else......
Did know one or two of the poor people who never came home.

Remember that, we were just kids. My parents were out with another couple that night who happened to run an ambulance service, needless to say the night was cut short as every available ambulance was needed.
Won't be able to watch the documentary, not sure I would really want to either I would find it too sad. Was the fire an accident/arson?
We didn't know anyone lost, but that must have been awful for those who did. It could so easily have been the Grove

I agree, Gary. I wouldn't watch it on principle. There has been enough heartache.

Thankfully they did all make it home but some of them quite seriously injured and had to spend months in hospital after.
Can remember the mornin after as if it was yesterday sitting at breakfast table listenin to the news just awful.
No mobiles in those days so difficult to contact people and find out if they where ok.

That b-----d Butterly had the 'grand opening' of the new Silver Swan on Febuary 14th...the man has no tact or respect-and probably no brain cells.

In answer to your question, Freebird. The original government enquiry ruled that it was 'probable arson' which gave Butterley the green light to make a claim. He received 3 million pounds to rebuild his little empire. The families and victims had to fight tooth and nail for the compensation they got, which was little enough.
26 years on, these people are still fighting for a new enquiry as so much evidence was omitted from the original one which is thought to have been started by a faulty heating system. Why the government won't go ahead with it and give them closure is beyond me.
As for Butterly, I don't know how he sleeps at night.

I never knew any of that Jen. You can only hope that with the documentary going to air on TV it may prompt another inquiry and the truth will come out.

Christ, IŽll never forget the time of the Stardust as long as I live. I went to work the day after, not knowing about the fire and when I got there two of my workmates were standing next to the radio. One of them, George, was black from head to toe and I laughed when I saw him and asked him had they no bath in his house. Then they told me about the fire. George had been down at the Stardust most of the night looking for his sister. He found her luckily, uninjured apart from smoke inhalation. It was a terrible time. It was also the end of us putting our coats down behind the seats in The Grove.

I worked with some of the Butterly family.
They're horrible people who believe they're above the rest of us. All I can say is I'm glad I was never an employee of theirs. They treat their staff like sh*t. They have an attitude that they are the real victims of the Stardust cos they lost a nightclub!!!!!

Vaguely remember the stardust happening, a fella in school with me at the time - both his sisters had been there, but had left early and avoided the fire.
Reading through Killian's links, it's a bit like Hillsborough - there but for the grace of god and all that. A few of us on here were at 1983 All Ireland and how nobody was killed I don't know - and yet we all just assumed that it was safe. That "somebody" wouldn't let it happen. That it was just one of them things.
I've been in a few crowded clubs in my time, and if something had gone up, heaven forbid. How many cigarettes have the members of this site collectively put out on carpets in clubs, for example. How often have we had to squeeze our way in somewhere. How rarely have we reviewed the fire exits?
It's not pleasant to think about, as you'd never go anywhere if you let it prey on the mind too much.
May all who died rest in peace....

Knew loads of folk from Edenmore that were killed that night! Remember a friend Laura back then having to leave the class as her cousins from Edenmore were killed.
What a sad sad occasion in our history.

Last year was the 25th anniversary of the tragedy so there was bound to be media attention. Combine that with the bastard butterly's plan to re-open the silver swan on the very night of the 25th anniversary the campaign made sure that the media latched onto it. However, as with all media stories, the attention soon drifts onto something else. Look at the Joe O'Reilly trial - yesterday's Indo had about 20 pages on it. Give it a week and there will be nothing more written about it. Doesn't mean though that it all gets forgotten!

My mother in law used to work in the Stardust part time at the weekends. She was on duty that night, but was one of the lucky ones to find an exit. She stayed outside to try and help, but has since maintained that it took the fire services far too long to get there and more lives could have been saved.
My wife still remembers that night when her mum came home and says the look on her face will haunt her for the rest of her days. It was a terrible event for the northside and Artane & surrounding areas in particular. Our very own Hillsborough, as was mentioned earlier in the thread. The RTE Drama is harrowing viewing.

I remember the Stardust fire well...a girl I walked to school with every day was killed in it. She got out apparently but went back to find her brother..he got out but she didn't. Can you imagine living with that?
When the Bali Bomb went off a few years ago I remember thinking then it was like the Stardust again. That was the first thought that came to me! I had been there a month before and knew both nightclubs very well and remember sitting watching the crowds of young kids (teens and early 20's) going into Paddy's and the Sari Club and saying to my friend how our kids would LOVE that craic and we should tell them to come over. A month later 202 of them were dead. Most burned to death.
I went back a month after the bomb again and went to the site of both nightclubs (across the road from eachother). There were picturs of the dead with hand written notes from their families pasted to the fenced area around it. The tragedy was tangible and overwhelming.
I was there again last week...the Sari club is still a vacant lot with some faded photos on the fence. A beautiful monument with the name of every person killed has been erected opposite it....but Paddy's has been rebuilt about 20 metres down the road and was FULL again of kids having a ball. The site of the old Paddy's has a surf shop on it. I asked a taxi driver why they built on it and not on the Sari Club and he told me the owner (who I know is married to an Irish woman) thought the land was too valuable to just leave as a morgue.
Interesting .........I dont quite know how I feel about it.
Thanks Evangeline for the name of the book..I didn't know one had been written..have ordered it from Amazon now.

Hi Folks,
I did get to watch that drama
The Stardust tragedy was terrible, and I happened to be passing by when the fire broke out. It was eerie because initially nobody realised the scale of the disaster - people were coming out of the adjoining pub with their drinks, just to have a look, maybe thinking the timber yard next door was on fire, but it soon became clear, and it was dreadful. I don't think Ireland had a Major Disaster Plan at the time, and the emergency services were overwhelmed but they did everything they could. As did everybody, ferrying people to hospitals or the lucky ones home, or anything that could be done.
The tv drama told one family's story, and despite the subject, was done very well; well produced and great actors/actresses. It showed the pain that so many went through in the years since, something we don't think about. From a documentary point of view, it was unfortunately very accurate - the chained exits, the bars on the windows, and the ongoing fight of the families and friends for justice.
The dead and injured will long be in our thoughts.

Carol..I was looking for that documentary on the ARCHIVE on the above www.rte.ie, but it wasnŽt to be found.
I watch a few things now and then courtesy of the Archive...you will see a little " Cam " next to the programme or schedule listings and then you know you can watch them on Realplayer or whatever you have.
Radio wise, I normally listen to a bit of G. Ryan if I can bear it and also Liveline with Joe Duffy..

Gosh guys such grief.....
Like Plastic Pat, G Ryan and Talk to Joe...
For me the show is only as good as WHO they have on or what they are talking about..not the actual presenters themselves.
oddly enough, sometimes it is good to sit down and listen to something " from home " once in a while amidst all the Castellano etc...homesickness no...just nice to catch up a bit sometimes.
If anyone ever watched or suffered like I do with Spanish TV or Radio.. ... they would understand
Like I was saying TO CAROL....yes Carol.....
Maybe you will find something to yer taste courtesy of

But keep it a secret obviously or youŽll be told off like mise....
