Yo,
Whilst diggin out some old photos circa 1973 I came across my old Grove membership card.
I remember the day I got it.
It was like becoming a member of the K Club. Those cards were treasured and if you remember the wait getting one.
Anyone else got their old membership card.

Hello fellow grove heads
I also found my old grove membership card and was showing it to my kids. They wanted to know why it had a burn mark on the corner. The reason was as they were so hard to get at the time and I had this card for a few years and I tried to remove they ON COOL photo of my youth and replace it with the new hippy picture of myself without success.

I reckon that for the next Grove Reunion, they should give everyone a memebership card, like the old days...

Rock on Grainnec,
Free pint would be great.
My membership card goes back to 1972 and there was no photo required then.

Sorry folks,
but as they say at the Races " Winner alright, Winner alright."
The acid test has to be whether you could actually recognise someone now from the picture on their card. Maybe we could all have a competition on the 27th.
Sorry, Biker Pat,that obviously excludes you and similar veterans of your era.

Look, what we should do is get everyone to bring their old card and put them into a big box.
Then, those who brought their cards would dip into the box and pull one out. They then have fifteen minutes to locate and recognise the person whose card they have picked out.
Those picking out cards from later periods would have a shorter time as obviously younger members won't have changed so much.
At this stage,I doubt if I could even recognise myself from the picture.
Makings of a game show perhaps ?????????

Yeh but seriously, judging from Sunday night and previous Grove occasions and due to the oul alcohol intake, i dont think most people would be able to see two feet infront of themselves let alone try and recognise someone they dont know!
Would be a funny game show though!

Lads this is the start of a great idea. I can see it now on RTE!! Maybe not but it would be a bit like the old Aer Lingus ad, with yer man with the long hair and the lost passport. In the days before they went low fares and who gives a **** if they miss their flight!!
I don't want to play though, coz I really was wicked in my picture.............can I still get a free pint????

Will someone fly me home for Christmas so I can make one of these reunions - me bloody heart is aching here reading all of this? The Christmas one better not be the last one to happen? By the way my less than popolur sister in law threw out all my old memorabilia when I left home - including my grove membership - she should burn at the stake for that one!!!

Eejit 91,
Start lobbying Crusty because I think he thinks Christmas is the last and the Radio City is going to be enough for us all. Does he not realise we're all mad for the Grove?!!
What time is it where you are?

I too still have my old grove membership, and I refuse to throw it out. My teenage daughter thinks I am nuts for holding on to it. I often wish she could experience "the grove thing" that I had at her age. She goes to Suttonians which is on once every two weeks but it cannot be the same as they don't do the slow sets anymore.
Its a part of my life that I like to look back on and remember with great fondness. I think this website is great it has brought such a smile to my face.

mine was mangled, burned, eaten, stabbed and still i couldnt destroy it. The photo i used for had had me wearing a hawaiin shirt that i loved. Im pretty sure i still have it at home but it would require some digging out. If i find it im bringing it to the next one.
Speaking of the next one, should we all wear name tags or something with our internet names on, so we can actually meet face to face?

Hello Sunshine,
Welcome to the forum. Would be pleased for some feedback about Suttonians as my young fella is starting to get interested as some of his mates are going.
You might check out the " PARENTS WOULD YOU LET YOUR KIDS GO TO THE GROVE " topic.

Hi Rolo
Suttonians is okay, they are strict in the sense they search kids going in but there always seems to be a small element of trouble there. I think it is pretty much zero tolerence, they are basically thrown out on to the street if there is any messing. I just wish there was more venues for the teenagers of today

Hello Sunshine,
Thanks for that.
What sort of age group are the regulars ? My fella's in first year in Paul's.I think he's a bit young yet,but as we all know," they grow up so quickly these days."
Definitely share your sentiments about lack of suitable venues for the kids.
The general consensus from the regular contributors to this forum would be that no one would have any problem letting their kids go to a place like the Grove if it was run on the same lines. Maybe today's kids are too sophisticated though.

Re: Todays kids and Discos
The great thing about the emphasis on the music side of things in the Grove was that I don't think it would ever have been cool to wear your knickers on your wrist going there. Would've been a bit pointless if you were wearing those drainpipe jeans anyway, they were never easy access!!
whats St Pauls like these days, my brothers all went there, was thinking of sending the little fellow, in 12 years time!!

My fella seems to like Paul's,though he's only there since September.
We didn't try to influence him too much with his choice,he was happy enough to go to the local school once his mates were going.
What was weird though, was going back to the hall for the open day and the pre school meetings.
It was so tiny.Couldn't believe how small it actually was. All the Grove memories we had were of what seemed to be a much bigger place.
Nothing's changed though, the stage, the alcove, the plastic chairs with the rude drawings on them. All that was missing was a pile of combat jackets in the middle of the floor surrounded by the infamous Air Guitar circle.
It was actually great to go back.Maybe when your fella goes there it will still be the same.

Hi Rolo
The age group for Suttonians is 14+ but as you can imagine there will always be younger. You will hear all sort of weird and wonderful stories that were doing the rounds about girls going in without underwear on. As far as I know it doesn't happen.

Such luck Pat! Ah but after my trip home last Christmas I think I'll be sitting pretty here I'm afraid. The Old Catholic tuition in the states is a costly thing. Worth it I hope though.
On the Suttonians thing! While home last Christmas a friend of mine had to go out to pick her niece up after the dance. Well when her niece did not appear with the rest of the crew she sent one of them back in to get her. While this little one was running from the car back to the hall her tiny little skirt went up in the air to reveal a tiny little G string...bear arsed for the world to see. Chris my friend said she nearly fell out of the car with fright. So maybe the bear ass thing is not a myth after all!!!!

Eejit,
There's so many forums around here it's difficult to cover them all and read all the posts.
Only saw this one now.
Don't know what to do 'bout the young fella and Suttonians.
Jaysus if he spotted young ones in G Strings it'd scare him to bits.
( I hope ).
