Well I don't usually make New Years Resolutions but I am determined to loose the weight this year. First goal is 3 stone by Easter as a starter. Started today... Walked into work and it took me 55mins. I'll have that down to 45 in no time.... If I can stick to the walking... Hardest part is getting the fecking motivation to do it.

Shaun N, I'm not sure we would agree with you spending less time here, all very admirable spending time with the other half - but get your priorities right
Gary good luck with the fags, it's really hard to do but stick with it.
Peter, best of luck with losing weight, I admire anybody who can walk into work. Hard enough when you get there driving!!! Anything we can do here to help, just ask.
Maybe if a couple of us are doing the same thing and don't live too far apart, go walking together. It's harder to give up when there are others doing it too. Or maybe we can all do it together - online, sort of. And then log it to show your progress.
I'm going to start walking too - not until next week tho' it's supposed to hit 40 degrees today. I'm not leaving my air con.

Walked again today the oul knees and the ankle are aching today. the poor old joints don't know what happening them today. With the pain I decided to only walk to Fairview, got to Fairview and aimed for North Strand bus stop and by that time it was too near the Custom house to get the bus. I walked through the pain barrier, feeling great now and fit after walking 2 days.... Fit for nothing

Pete,
Best of luck with the walking. It's a great way to get your head right as well as getting fit. If you find your joints ache try taking Glucosamine sulphate - I find it really good. Can be got in any health food shop or boots. But fair dues.

Pete,
Thought this might be of use to you
Socks Socks do make a difference, my advice is to spend as much as you can afford on your socks. You don't need lots of pairs, provided you are prepared to wash them when you stop at night. Wool can give some people rashes so make sure that you test out your new socks under full walking conditions before you go. If you don't then rashes around your ankles may follow.
In the same vein, if you are buying new socks, buy a pair and test them out rather than buy several pairs at once.
When I was in scouts we used to always wear two pairs of socks under our boots. In recent years this seemed to fall out of fashion as sock technology improved. Now the trend seems to be swinging back in favour of two pairs. I would like to recommend buying liner socks, thin socks that you wear under ordinary walking socks. They are light to carry, dry faster than normal socks and give your feet greater protection.
There is a company that sells 1,000 mile socks that have an inner layer built in to them. They guarantee that wearers won't get blisters. I personally found it more comfortable to wear a liner sock and thick sock over it.
Artificial Means Some walkers swear by surgical spirits. Apparently rubbing surgical spirits on your feet regularly for a few months before you walk will help them to toughen up. A cautionary note though is that some people with sensitive feet find that surgical spirits make their feet bleed.
Another tip is to rub talc all over your feet at the start of the day to help keep them dry.
Dealing with blisters
Even if you've done everything you can to toughen up your feet you may still get blisters. It's probably safer to assume that you will get them and therefore carry a blister kit with you. Most of the villages you'll stop in are very small and don't have chemists.

yep socks and shooes are very important for walking, make sure you are not walking in normal shoes, need to be walking shoes or runners, something that puts a bit of distance between you and path. also thay have to some give in them, as path walking is harder on joints than hill walking. When I do long walks i dont use surgical spirits, i do the opposite i keep the foot moist, i use a barrier cream. Also if a lot of your walk is downhill you need to get an insole with an arch support, as this will stop your foot sliding towards the front of shoe.
This is a great time of year to start walking, sales in all the outdoor shops, plus evenings will get brighter and brighter.

Jen,
We had this debate ages ago when Martin started the St Anne's thread. My memory was that the avenue was a mile long - that's what we were always told in school where many's the PE running session finished with a race down the avenue. Don't think it's exactly 1 mile but it's as near as damnit.

Peter, as already recommended, go for a decent pair of walking shoes or trainers. If you're buying trainers make sure you tell the assistant they are for walking and they should be able to recommend a good pair. Best of luck!
Whipper, thanks for that. A mile sounds about right.

Hey GG I have thought about them, but doen nothing else about them I heard they are great though!.. Maryi I had my feet in a basin with cornflour don't ask me why but parents told me this is good also. I have put my some blister plasters on them too. The old legs up along the side of the shin are sore and muscle in the thigh are stiff. Went to lifestyle and ask the guy in there to recommend a pair of runners... He recommend a pair that I was already wearing.. Depend on wether tomorrow I might get the bus...
Going to bed shortly I am tired but feeling great

Pete I walk if i have to!! Hubby on the other hand is a marathon runner (lunatic) He says " you need different shoes for different surfaces ie hard pavements, sand, grass etc., Most guys in sports shops haven't a clue if you have pains up the side of your shins you might develop Shin Splints and then you have to change the surface you are walking on (does that make sense ?) If you go to a big sports shop and ask for running shoes for hard ground then you should be ok - but he says socks are everybit as important as shoes - LASTLY he recommends that you don't get leather runners but cloth ones as they allow your feet to breath.
I forgot - Do some light stretching before you start for your hamstrings

First up ,it sounds like black russian is using muscles he has not used before ,or should i say has not used lately and maybe a bit to much to soon,Maryi is dead right a little bit of streching before and after is in order .and maybe get ur feet right first then do a little bit of walking and little bit more and so on and your body will slowly come around, there is no point in walking on sore feet.
Also Gary i wish u well with the Fags ,i have to say i dont think food is a sbad as the smokes, when i gave them up if i felt like eating i tried to eat fruit rather than crap ,What ur doing they say is one of the hardest things to give up ,but belive it or not u r over the worst keep the faith and i wish u all the luck

Teresa i have thought about giving up the vino on numerous occasions but decided its just a non runner for lots of reasons the main one being I like it too much
maybe I should try Peters approach and only have wine on mondays wednesdays Fridays

Blondie I never knew that - I assume his courses are still being given though.
Gave up all alcohol when my daughter was born 18 years ago - Never missed it so I am hoping the fags will be the same. i do drink too much coffee though.

If you got through the first week believe it or not you are half way there, The rest is will power. If you feel a need for a ciggie just distract yourself for 5 minutes or so until the craving passes, and this does work. The main thing is not to give in.
Hope this doesn't sound preachy

Mary, yes the Alan Carr courses are still running and I went to one two years ago and stayed off the fags for 8 months until I had a cigar at a wedding and that was that.
This time there'll be no cigars but I'm using the Carr hand outs as props and it seems to be working
So far so good.
Rolo I admire your resolution and the very best of luck with it.
Pete I would suggest one thing at a time ???

Aries,
I really admire your willpower - I know I have to give them up. So I am looking for an easy way out. There are Alan Carr seminars available in Cork so I am going to book one today.
I wish everyone the best of luck in their resolutions and hope ye all have a healthy new year.

I'm giving up the sauce after this weekend too. Which gives me 6 weeks until my trip to London. Should be able to knock a few pounds off in that space of time. Best of luck to anyone else who's on the fitness trail.

Mary
Pfeizer have a new drug out at the moment that comes very highly recommended. You take it for 5-7 days while smoking and then you stop smoking without any pangs.
It is expensive though about 134 euro per month for 3 months so if your not in the drug scheme in your Chemist you should join. It will then be 90 euro per month.
Its my fall back position should good old Cold Turkey fail

Aries,
Thanks for that info. Alan Carr's group have a seminar in Cork on 19th Jan and I booked it this morning. I also got the book so I can "prepare" But give me the drugs - only messing it is a really good fall back plan cos you know it's there. I'm the only one in the house that smokes and I'm at the stage that I go out the back for a fag how stupid am I !!!
thanks again.

fair play to you though wouldnt fancy it meself to be honest consider alcohol my one and only vice left so I'm keeping it ta very much.
although I should point out that Easter is very very early this year 24th of March so not too long to go as other years.
gary friend of mine did that drug for three months and still off them but did make her very very queasy all the time smoking or not.

My new years resolution is to lose weight and get in shape. To that end I have just ordered an exercise bike. Hopefully I´ll be able to get fit and watch telly at the same time.
