Decided to open this as a new Thread.

Photos welcome ( ATTN: Stoner and Robbie 63 ).

Who remembers when they SERIOUSLY either starting growing or styling their hair particularly during the Grove Years.

What was the MAIN motivation ?? - the music, the trends, the friends, Smash Hits, TOTP, Old Grey Whistle Test, wanting to piddle their parents off or whatever.

Tick where appropriate.

Memories and stories on hair cutting, spiking, streaking, henna, perms, moose, curling tongs, twirly brushes, rakes, hair spray, hair gel, bandanas,...etc...etc..

Some of this has been covered before but it deserves
it`s own special place here in the Topics.

My hair story started with growing out a pageboy, bowl haircut from my Confirmation days.

It grew out and then in, semi mullet until I decided around Inter Cert year that my Dad needed sorting and I got it spiked and jammed 5 earrings into one earlobe.

I remember heading over to Kilbarrack Shopping Centre, those were the days of the itchy dry cuts, hair stuck to collar kind.

I showed the stylist a picture I had pulled from Smash Hits. She refused to do it at first cos she permed my Mums hair and knew what my Mum would think then she relented. Got into heaps of trouble and my Dad used to stare me out of it so much at dinner that I resorted to taking my plate and myself elsewhere.

Then I headed to the Grove, dropped the Big Country look and started to GROW the hair. I was already mad into AC/DC, Santana etc and sussed fairly early on that the " bangs" were indeed all of the long haired breed and I knew that was where I was meant to go; that was where I belonged.

The gruaig went through its awful growing out phase, almost mullet like yet again and I used to back comb it and tie a Indian scarf under my fringe !!!.
Odd days I used to plait either side and wear small plaits down the side of my face caught at the end with beads.

Henna was added and it started to look like something. One side purple, one side burgandy ( brought more evil looks from the Dad ).

Perming came in in a big way then and off I went to try that out. Perms were horrible when done initially, all tight and Granny Basher like, then when they grew out a bit, looked great and peformed well at the Grove.

I spent the majority of my time hiding behind my fringe and making sure it was very long. Someone had told me I had a high forehead so that was that..took me years to grow out a fringe and tie it back and get over it.

For me the hair was everything as far as I was concerned and the clothes secondary.

Horror Stories, Happy Stories..

Get going

First photo on this page, that's me,green jumper at the back on the right at Easter 1981.

Not so much of a haircut as a " lack thereof ".

I tried and tried to grow my hair long. It ended more of a mullet. I had a "kink" in my hair it just didn't grow any longer than my collar and start curling up Grrrr!!!!
I wanted it like Bono hair during the War and UnForgettable Fire era.. I knew I couldn't get it to grow like his Joshua Tree hairstyle... All I say thank God for POP and Popmart tour I have the same hairstyle almost... Shaven well mine was bald his was shaven

My hair was short when I first went to the Grove but after seeing all the other lads there with long hair (and realising that you couldnt really headbang without it), I started to grow mine.  At one point, I made a fatal mistake and got it cut to around shoulder length with a dodgy fringe and I never lived it down.  Started re-growing it after that.  Have always liked having long hair and it was incredibly traumatic for me when I noticed in the 1990s that it was thinning.  Its still long though!

I suppose I had a pretty normal but longish hairstyle at school that wouldn't upset the Marist Fathers at Chanel. I remember some 6th years being made an example of, by having ribbons tied in their hair by the priests. They rang up the Herald and got their pics on the front page!!

so I'd be one of those who had longer hair after the Grove years -

a couple of years after school I grew the beard , used a bit of henna, and got the Peter Marks Perm!  I only got the one perm as the motorbike lids would've flattened them!
will try to dig out some pics...

Ah Mel, that's a priceless admission. What's worse is that I remember that and yeah, it was well dodgy .

Good lord, my hair. Bane of my life.

Would love to have it grow long. Really long (Steve Harris from Iron Maiden type long). Why? Because I like that look. And I'd just like to have it grow that long, and put a tick in that box.

But, it grows big, really big. I was getting a cut a few years back and the young fella doing my hair was breathing deeply just behind me. I was getting a touch worried, but in fairness he was just driven mad. "Your hair just grows all over the place" he announced. "Tell me about it" says I.

Pre Grove, it was blow dry and brush back off forehead - up up and away.

Over the years I've tried a couple of times to grow it - Attempt 1 ended with Paul's sending home a note. Got through Saturday and thought I had another week to grow it. Hair wasn't near as curly back then for some reason - about collar length. auld lad grabbed a handful of it in his fist and cut - looked like Jaws had taken a bite outa it. Went to a barber for a rescue mission soon after that.

I used to get a number one all over, leave it three or four months until it was all over the shop and then repeat the process for a few years.

Attempt two ended when Mrs Whipper and whipper's ma ganged up and told me I'd ruin my brother's wedding for everyone if I didn't cut my hair. That was just over two years ago. Can't stand up to both women in my life - I'm brave but not stupid.

Attempt three is still in progress, but seems to just curl up on itself rather than grow down.

This morning my wife looked at me and said, "Did you hear that on the news? Well groomed men earn on average 6% more than others". Wonder why she said that?

Blondie,

I remember the Escape the Ape well. If memory serves I would have required a second mortgage to cover the time they'd spend on me

think I gave some members in Harry's a glance at one shoulder to demonstrate the appropriateness of the avatar. There was some retching, coats grabbed and off they dashed

i have always liked long hair, on both men and women. I was into rock music from an early age and there were very few short haired hippies! so it seemed kinda natural to grow it. though during my school going years in st vincents, i was constantly trying to avoid being noticed for having long hair. One gets quite inventive. But after the intercert, it got easier, so from the time that i got my grove pass pic taken, it didnt get cut again for about 5 -6 years.

I still have long hair today though most of the time its tied in a ponytail. i often say that this year will be the last year with it, but i have yet to get it cut off, maybe this year.

I will have a scout around and see if i can find any pics of it long during grove years.

Do that TP, would like to see one.

Was similar to you in school but our principal at the time,Br.Crowe, had a phobia about long hair.

Every poor unfortunate with the exception of me and one other lad had to visit the barbers.

The other lad was Leinster Schools Pole Vault Champion, so for some reason he was exempt. My Grandad was school caretaker for over 50 years and had a word with the Boss for me so I was exempt too .

Don't think it was really long when I went to NIHE, so must have got a job done sometime in or around mid 1982.

Mins.....you have just described my grove days here. Yes I went to Peter Marks and got the perm but you had to wait for at least 3 weeks before it stopped looking like a granny perm and loosened up a little.....but then it looked "cool" and lasted for about 8 months, then back for the granny perm again
And I was also told when I was a child that I had a high forehead ( it's a sign of intelligence, you know ) but I would never and still won't clip back my fringe.....if I could on a windy day I would glue it down.

I had curly long hair in my grove days and I HATED IT!. Spent hours trying to straighten it before going out in public, slept with it in plaits to control it, wore my hood UP on the duffel when in drizzle and rain because that had the same effect as going to Peter Marks for the granny perm!..and then went to the Grove, began head banging, got all sweaty and WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Up and out she goes!! BIG Hair (your's is NOTHING Whipper!).

To this day it is high maintenance to keep some shape on it but add water, humidity or anything other than hot wind and she's off again doing what she wants. I have complained about it to anyone who will listen and had several hair dressers advise on how to manage it when I go to Bali (high humidity). Last year I went to Bali for the first time with a friend I have known for years..who has heard me complain for years about my hair in Bali and just laughed at me......we had only landed and in the airport she said " OH MY GOD!!! I have never seen hair do THAT!!!. That is when she introduced me to hair straighteners....never looked back. They are to my hair what a whip is to a lion in the hands of a trainer!

ROFL Carol - I remember those plaits!

I have a perm story. Just before the intercert my mother convinced me that a bodywave was different to a perm. With this magical bodywave my thin hair would thicken up and I could just brush it into some shape! Wally that I am I believed her and off I set to the hairdressers (Lions mane I think in Talbot St) I explained to the tanned man with the medalion, shirt open to his waist, hairy chest (should have known!) what I wanted and he said yes he could do that.

With total blind faith I sat there and didn't even worry when my head was covered in tiny curls under the red lights, believing this was a stage in the process!

It was only when the lights were taken away and he said 'there we go!' that I realised that I had an afro! It was pouring down outside so an umbrella hid my tears as I made my way down to the bus.

The inter was starting the next day so I reefed and dragged my hair back into a ponytail, wore my duffel with hood up and was last into the hall and first to leave. I did this everyday for the exams until finally the last day came and off I went into town and got my hair cut  to about half an inch all over. Even that short I could still see those springs!! I think one photo exists somewhere in my mother's.

To this day my mother still insists that a bodywave is a different thing and that I should give it another go!!

Yes ...I did the perm thing too back in the 80's and ,looking back, they were either too tight or frizzy.

I had one in later years at the Grove which I actually liked but shortly after I 'volunteered' myself at a hairdressers convention in the RDS where 'Toni and Guy' destroyed my golden locks !

Longish thick wavy hair to begin with, then a number of us joined the FCA - so we had a special dispensation from Junior Flinter and the other doormen (some of whom were Gardaí) to attend the Grove with our short back and sides (short back and sides were not looked upon favourably at the door way back in 1977).

So we were headbanging to air guitars and air hair!!!

You never know June one day I might hit my head on a rock and do just that!!! Actually  I think I hated the perm so much that I brushed all of the curls out daily til it was more fuzz than anything else and that is what the photo shows!!

Well attempt three finished last week. Eventually gave up the ghost and got it cut. It had got to a stage where even I didn't think it looked well .

and it was interfering with the football. At one stage I thought someone was coming in to tackle and I hurried my shot. there was nobody within five yards of me. It was just my fringe being blown across by a gust of wind.
