Yes, it is a pity, but all things must pass, it's better to burn out than fade away, less is more - whatever way you choose to see it, I've been thinking long and hard about it and I feel if the Grove Reunions are to continue at all it will be on a once a year basis. That way it will be more special. I hinted at it at the Christmas reunion and I feel the moment is right to make the change. No particular reason apart from the fact that it just doesn't feel so special anymore, there's no sense of occasion anymore (at least not the way it used to be) - too much of a good thing etc... Cecil's totally with me on this. I really don't want it to die so I feel this is the best way to give it new life. After Easter, the next reunion will be 2009 somewhere a lot closer to it's home (Clontarf). Keep an eye on the site for more info.
This is not the beginning of the end either. This is just the next stage. There will be other Grove related activities throughout the year, just no reunions. Think of it as a breath of fresh air - Fresh air is a good thing!

Hear you loud and clear Andy. Just so glad that it's not stopping altogether. Once a year is better than nothing, guess you just spoilt us for the last 2 years with 4 reunions a year. And yeah I agree with you one reunion a year will be a blast and it will be special.

Not totally surprised at the announcemnt to be honest from talking to Cecil the last few weeks. Cecil was wondering has it run it course, as I said to him I don't think it has. The only thing with me is since it moved into the The Button Factory thats special feeling of going to the Grove was gone, it feeling like it. I know I said it when it was first suggested about the Grove moving into town, I said the Buzz of going won't be the same, and it wasn't the same. With the Sheiling it felt it felt right Button Factory was a great venue, but it was never felt like the Grove.
If I'm to be totally honest, Coming up to this reunion I wasn't overly excited or looking forward to it and was seriously thinking of giving it a miss, haven't bothered to get a ticket yet. The reason why is what I said above I don't enjoy then as much because of the location of the venue.
I do agree with maybe cutting the reunions down to 1 or 2 a year. I think the reunion at Halloween would be the best one to continue with. Its the one people enjoy and getting dressd up etc etc.
With all the other other "Grove" events during the year that will help us with our "Cold Turkey"
Thanks again Andy and Cecil for the reunions they have been great.

You're probably right,Andy-I for one felt Halloween and Christams last year ran too close together, felt'here we are again' at the Christmas one. Still enjoyed it every bit,but I do see where you're coming from.
I thought one of you was retiring...as you said before,it wouldn't be a re-union without Cecil, and I thought maybe he was going back into retirement...glad to see he's still on board for future events.
So-next year...what'll it be???
2,000 attendees in St. Annes as you spin the sounds from the mound???

Ah well Crusty (and Cecil) you are right really. I am so delighted I got to the Christmas one. It was a fantastic venue and the atmosphere of friendship from everyone was what I remember most from the Grove (along with the music).
For me it was like being 16 again but with the wisdom of an oul one! An opportunity to revisit the best of the past and be grateful that I am where I am...closure in a nice kinda way.
Thanks for that fantastic opportunity.

Well personally..I think it's a pity...especially seeing as how myself and BB can't make this one...but I can understand that it's probably a big drag on Andy and Cecil and all others involved in trying to organise that many re-unions a year.
But to be honest..I've never been that caught up in the whole Grove reliving thing ..for the first few maybe yeah..but I've looked on the Reunions as just great nights out..great music and great company. The fact that they originated as Grove Re-unions is by the by to me.
I think there has to be a demand for a regular club ..okay..not every week...but several times a year..where music for people who are just not that interested in the whole Hip hop, club scene.
Maybe that's what Andy is hinting at here, I don't know. But I honestly think there is a demand for a decent Monthly or two monthly club night, on a smaller scale, that concentrates on, but is not exclusive to, music from the Grove generations.
For me that is the greatest legacy that these re-unions have left.
That a lot of us have realised that once you hit 35 (or less in some cases) you don't have to hang up the boots and put on those Daniel O'Donnell records.
Maybe it's a case of The Grove is Dead...Long live the Grove

P.s ...have a great night on Sunday folks...we'll be there in spirit

Personally, I'm going to miss the fact that there's going to be no other reunion this year. They were always something to look forward to for me as there really isn't any other club that plays music like that around and the fact that we were all getting to know each other made the night even more fun. Ok, so maybe Halloween and Christmas were too close together but I'm still sad to hear this news. I'm sorry you feel it's no longer 'special', Andy and Cecil.
I guess we'll just have to organize a few more nights out instead. The Nep gets my vote. Central with a decent bit of music on the jukebox.
Sunday night's gonna be a bittersweet one now.

A lot of negativity in the house today peeps!
It's not the end-hopefully we will have a re-union every year to look forward to-and will possibly make us appreciate it more so-which is (I think) the foresight of Andy
Most of you have respomded in a way which speaks for itself 'I wasn't going to bother this time'-well,if it was once a year you would! (me certainly)
Cheer up! Let's enjoy Sunday, let's make it a special one for Andy and Cecil, let's be thankful for a re-union to go to (remember, Halloween we nearly didn't have one at all except for Andy's efforts) and let's have loads headbanging and beer in honour of BB and HD! (and all the faraways, which we always do anyway)

But do you think people weren't bother because since the change of the Venue. I know thats the reason I was thinking of not going, its I don't enjoy it in the Button Factory, but my passion for the Grove is still there. Talking to a few people that are not on the site feel the same way that its lost the Grove feeling in the BF.
Just even talking to Cecil he said he would like to see it closer to its original location and thats why I was a bit surprised to hear his decision that this will probably be his last one. Cecil asked me "Do I think people are loosing interest in the Reunions or was it the Venue" I could only speak for myself and I said the Venue is what puts me off, more than location of the venue and not the Venue itself.

I think the Christmas one is held at the right time a few days after Christmas day and people finished visiting and want to get out on their own. Halloween ones are always packed because of the night thats in it.

Awful lot of negativity ( with a few notable exceptions ) going on here fellas ( and girls ) ,when what we should really be doing is looking forward.
Look at all the good that's come out of Andy's vision,we've been to a few reunions, we've all become good friends,we've had some really good ( non Reunion ) nights out etc, etc.
Things in life run their course, you deal with it and you move on.
Yeah, so there won't be a Summer or Christmas Reunion but that'll hardly stop us getting together for a few beers and a few laughs, all it takes is for people to make the effort to keep the friendships alive, not too difficult in my book.
There's a big debt of gratitude due to Andy, Tina and Cecil and their team for all of their efforts and from your responses to the various presentations etc., I know we all know this.
Instead of focusing on the " poor us, no more reunions " thoughts, we should be looking forward and making sure that we keep this thing very much alive.
Don't mean to have a go at anyone for saying that they will miss the reunions,so apologies if it comes across that way.No offence intended.

I'd agree with you P; I'm not mad about going into town either, though the button factory is a great venue.

I don't think it's the venue, if it was still in The Shieling it would be the
same situation. It's the old "too much of a good thing" syndrome.
Personally speaking, if my favourite band were to play in Dublin four
times a year, I know for sure I wouldn't be at every gig! As someone
(Hayseed, I think) mentioned earlier, it's not about recreating the Grove
anymore, it's about the get together, the music, Cecil and the common
factor is that we all used to go the Grove. You couldn't find a better venue
than the current one. I mean, when I went to The Grove it was in St.
Paul's, a school gym, totally impersonal, but it worked. It's the people
that make the event not the venue. If people really wanted to go, they
would, but the fact that there were going to be a couple more this year
meant that they could be choosey. And there within, me thinks, lies the
downfall. If we do a reunion next year, it will most likely be around
Hallowe'en, which means that it will be just over a year and a half before
the next one (19 months), that's a long time! So there might be a small
reunion (capacity 250), un-advertised, word of mouth, for the hardcores,
to bridge the gap, possibly October. Again, it will all depend on a few
factors. Watch this space...

Andy you know best. There are a lot of disappointed grove heads out there (me included) but you need to have a sense of when the well of magic is running dry. I would love if we had a reunion 2 times a year - 6 months apart - I feel that would not be an overkill and would be delighted - as I'm sure we all would - if there was one at a "select Northside venue" at Halloween 08. Totally gutted to miss to the one on Sunday as I'm in Sacramento (made the last 6) but there's still a lot of rocking out there to be done. Have a ball on Sunday guys.

I have to echo most of what Rolo said, especially our appreciation of what Andy, Tina, Cecil and all those involved in the organisation have done for us. That said, for one who doesn't really go out that much, it was a really great night out where I could do what I pleased and know that your are among friends. That's quite important because, if you have to worry about what people think of your antics, then you lose a lot. The last time at the Sheiling my son and his girlfriend joined in. Our illustrious sherrif asked me was I "not morto doing ann the headbanging with my son and his girl looking on" "Not a bit" says I.

Imagine if Christmas '08 came along and only half the tickets were sold and it was obvious it was dying a death. I for one would not like to walk away that night saying 'didn't enjoy that' or 'it wasn't really good'.
Disappointed we won't be indulged four times a year? Yes.
Want to see a good thing nosedive? Definitely not.
I would rather one good re-union a year instead of a few dwindling ones.

I enjoyed the 2 reunions I went to in the Sheiling last year but The Button Factory...? WTF? At least The Sheiling was local, albeit a sweatbox. I wouldn't fancy going into town at all - it just wouldn't be the same. At least The Sheiling was local, so it had that sense of camaraderie, like everyone was there shared the common interest. Having it in town now ruins that IMO, as it attracts hacks that never even went to the Grove, as well as people who decide to just pop into The Button Factory on that particular night....it just becomes watered down with wannabes & passing punters in town, so you lose that sense of what made the prior reunions special.
I suggested Grange Woodbine in Raheny as a venue. No idea why they didn't go with it. I've been to 21sts there before,a nd it's easily bookable, and it's as close to St. Pauls layout as you're gonna get in the area (stage, dancefloor, etc) + a bar! It would be 10 times better than the Sheiling too!

Always think less is better than more, more appreciated, better attended - you can have too much of a good thing. One good reunion a year - the biz.
One thing I keep hearing bout is "town is out" - with that I would totally agree. People for various and many reasons do not want to go into Dublin city in the evenings any more - listen to the people, no one goes into town unless they absolutely have to in the evening, the grove being a northside club would be much better enjoyed on the northside - On that note well done to Crusy & Cecil, I know you are doing the right thing .

The reason for Grange Woodbine not making the grade was a matter of capacity - those who bought their tickets early would've been happy, but there would have been at least 200 disgruntled ex-Grovers hanging around Station Road on a cold and miserable Irish night! Floyd, yes, with the gap of a year between the reunions, the thought of people forgetting about the reunions has crossed my mind, but that's where increased ticket prices and more extensive advertising comes into play. Tickets will cost more, but that'll be paying for 30x40 ad campaigns etc., so we will do our best to ensure all are aware of the reunions. But unfortunately you will be paying for it. As you are aware, we try to keep the prices down as much as possible, so we'll do our best to keep it within paupers' reach! - so we can all enjoy it. Value for money.

I agree. Its a shame that there is only going to be one reunion a year but our regular get-togethers should keep us going in the meantime. I love coming on here and chatting with you guys/girls and I find myself counting down the days until the next get together or reunion. A nicer bunch of mates, I dont think you could find anywhere. Cheers gang, and thanks to Andy, Tina and Cecil for keeping things going!
Edit: I suppose its too early to start discussing the next get-together then?

Never too early to discuss another night out Mel.......considering we missed out on last night. Remember the summer is near and I'm sure we can all have days out ( with our kids ) as well as nights out ( without our kids ) to look forward to. Skerries beach is supposed to be lovely so maybe we'll have a " grove reunion day at the beach" for all the little kids and not so little kids !!!. And please lets have another night in the Nep........the last one was brilliant

I believe every possible venue was examined prior to Halloween,Sean,in an effort to keep the re-unions Northside. Due to a last minute hiccup on the Craobh Ciarain's part, the Button Factory was pulled out of the hat at the last minute. But I understand there was one problem or another with all the venues looked at,The Grange included.
The mods are working very hard to bring the next one back to the Northside, and rest assured wherever it will be it will be because all the boxes will be ticked.

Don't get me wrong - I completely understand why The Button Factory had to be used when that other GAA club fell through - I was just saying that Grange Woodbine is bigger than The Sheiling (as far as I recall), and has a much better layout, and isn't a sweatbox.

I think The Grove has survived because even though the venue has changed over the years, the music is still there.
From the old site, to St. Pauls, to the Shieling, to the Button Factory and even to the website.
The music is still there from the past and current venues, to our computers via fab discs for us to download and our ipods.
It doesn't matter where its held. It just matters that you go.
Us lot overseas would love the chance to queue for hours for a taxi for just one night of a reunion.
Thanks to Andy, Tina and Cecil and others I'm not aware of we still have the grove.

Hi Sean, when I was scouting for an alternative venue I was told that the capacity of the Grange Woodbine was between 350 and 400 by law, trust me we had a lot more people in The Shieling on many a night there. I think Grange Woodbine would've been a perfect alternative but capacity wouldn't have been suitable. I'm only going on what I was told at the time of enquiry. Yes, The Shieling was a "sweat box", and a kip and whatever else you want to call it, but it worked for the purpose required.

Crusty, & Cecil,
Having read all the above comments, one thing stands out for me - this was obviously a very hard decision but taken in the long term interest & for everyone. For that and for some great nights out thankyou.
I can also understand some disappointment. The reunions are special and can only continue if they remain so. We are very lucky to have had 3/4 reunions a year. Perhaps they reached a peak with the 40th anniversary ? Maybe the trek into town did not help. Or Easter hols. Still, once a year will be special - like your birthday or Xmas !

|
Aw Mr Herbert, we meet again. ;) The thing about the Sheiling was, it was local in the sense close to where it once was. However a lot of people have moved out of Dublin since then.
As for "hacks" who never went before, i'll try not to take it personally but attendance is attendance. Promotion is a business the last time i checked, and i figured you of all people would understand that. And in that sense, i really don't see the problem with some new blood. I've had some good nights thanks to these reunions between 2006 to present day. If it was you that was running the reunions, do you honestly believe you'd care about exactly who bought the tickets? I'd somehow doubt it. :)
I don't know what the profit/loss/breaking even margin was from the last three reunions of the button factory. The attendance did take time before the crowds got in, but the crowds were there by the time it was closing time. The Sheiling also had that issue as well though coming to it's closing dates (from what i remember anyway). The city centre isn't exactly the most inconvenient place to get to, or get out of. I remember the last christmas reunion at the Sheiling (2006 i think it was), and the were tons of people trying to hail cabs left right and centre on the Howth Road. To me, that was more of an inconvenience than trying to flag down a cab in the city centre.
Just my opinion though. me.

I don't think it's the venue, if it was still in The Shieling it would be the
same situation. It's the old "too much of a good thing" syndrome.
Personally speaking, if my favourite band were to play in Dublin four
times a year, I know for sure I wouldn't be at every gig! |
I'd tend to agree and disagree there. Although i do understand from your standpoint. Both yourself and Cecil have taken personal time out of your lives to provide these nights. As a latecomer, i for one definitely appreciated them. And in certain senses too much of anything can be a good thing, especially with concerts. The only exception i ever made for seeing anyone more than once a year was this year and thats because the band broke up.
However comparing the reunions to a concert might be a little unfair. There was more of a personal aspect to them. Everything from the music played, to the personal touches like people on the dancefloor being addressed personally. That's not something that happens if you'd say go to the Neptune, or Bruxelles etc. It's the little things really that i think people will miss more.
19 months sounds even longer when it's put in the sense that it's over a year and a half. And as much as i appreciate the plan ahead. A lot of things can change in that time. Six months could go by and yourself and Cecil could get the itch again to get it going. It may or may not happen. I guess what i'm trying to say is that none of us can tell what's going to lay ahead.
So i'll end this by thanking yourselves for the reunions to date, and stay positive for whatever lies ahead :)
me.

I have to add my 2c worth. I have no problem with people who are not of the Grove age joining our reunions. Spread the gospel and enlighten their lives. Cecil was telling me a story about a girl who approached him at the hallowe'en reunion. She said that she had wasted 7 years listening to hip hop and rave music never knowing what she was missing. My son and his girlfriend attended one of the reunions in the Sheiling and thoroughly enjoyed it. Likewise some of my younger colleagues are really enthusiastic about "old" music and are keen to come to the reunions. With open arms they are welcome.
I preferred the Button Factory to the Sheiling. The facilities are much better, including the lavs. There were a few yaahoos there last time but just happy drunks, no aggro. Shaun, sorry I didn't get to meet you. You looked like you had a great time. That's all from me.

I supose I should put my twopence worth in here. The button Factory really did nothing for me although I had a great night there. I only met some of you guy's last year in Harry's for Cecil's birthday and since then I must say that I get great enjoyment from the site and from the gatherings. In truth I havent met many from my era 72/76 from the original Grove which to me was the only Grove. My memories of the Grove will never be altered no matter where the reunions are.( even having met 1265 there he he ) I really would like to see it back on the northside if it's at all possible. If it's only once a year so be it, We can have lots of gatherings throughout the year. Somebody said that the Old Sheiling was a sweat box, but I remember sometimes would need a towel after head banging in the old Grove. Wasent it great and sweaty. We should all look forward and not look back. We did that when Belgrove was burnt down and now just look at the activity on the site, the reunions and the get togethers.

Agree totally Dave, that's why I'm not buying into all this business as to whether the Button Factory is or was better than the Shieling,or which was the sweatier or the smellier or which Jacks was nicer ( sorry Briano ) or whether or not the Button Factory may or may not have attracted a few lucky souls who were fed up to the back teeth of the crap music being played in most of the other clubs in the city.
The fact is that all of us on here are now happy to attend these Reunions because we've all ended up as friends as a result of being lucky enough to hook up over the last couple of years as a result of Andy's vision.
PS DAYO, no Zimmer Frames allowed into either venue, hence you are most unlikely to meet that many from your era .
