No Problem Mary, with nearly 600 km to walk, i will have time to pray for all of ye, several times!

I am doing the pilgrimage,

The main route, featured here, is more commonly known as the Camino Frances,. This part of the Camino de Santiago traditionally starts in St Jean Pied de Port and finishes in Santiago de Compostela about 780km later, after traveling the breadth of Northern Spain.(In Santiago you can collect your Compostela) However you can start anywhere and even continue past Santiago to the sea at Finisterre. Finisterre was thought to be the end of the world in medieval times.

Last year we awlked from St Jean in France, crossed the pyrennes into Spain  and walked to Burgos. This year we are walking from Burgos to Finisterre, and maybe back to santaigo again, depending on time and our condition.

There are five of us walking, all working in central bank of ireland, we range in ages from 30 to 64, and all levels of fitness. Thought this year a few of us are taking the training a bit more seriously. Today we will walk from three rock pub in rathfarnham to enniskerry village via wicklow way after work, about 20 km. Tomorrow a circuit of djouce, Something on friday, and lug on sunday, fentons to glenmalure.

We have decided to try and raise some money for St. Francis Hospice in Raheny.

So if anyone wants to sponsor me, feel free. We were sent some cards from the hospice for this. All money raised will go to the hospice. It will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the kind words of support,

joey, hopepully 18 days walking or less, they say that after first week, you can increase distance, we are starting with 30 km a day, plus we are all carrying our backbacks, which adds another 10 -12 kg on us plus water. then after the  second week we hope increase the distance again, so we may finish earlier.

We still stay in hostels and dormitories arranged by the church in spain, there are lots of places to stay. We will probably start walking about 6.30 - 7.00 in morning, to avoid the midday heat.

We expect to finish each day by about three  to four in afternoon each day.

You can give the sponsorship money to myself or pass it on directly to hospice, whichever is most convenient. I will be at both of the meet ups in next few weeks.

yesterdays walk, on above link. underneath the map, there is a box that says elevation, if you click that you get the profile of the walk. Apart from training side of yesterdays walk, it is a good day out if anyone on site does hill walking or hiking. It is well signposted, so hopefully one shouldnt get lost. lots of little waymark signs.

The walk is about 20 km, but it can be cut in half and finish in johnny foxes instead of enniskerry. Plus both the start and finish are serviced with buses, so need to arrange two cars, which is the usual way for a-b routes.

We were quite lucky with light and weather, it was dusk when we arrived in enniskerry and just starting to rain.

Evening guys, greetings from Carrion de los condes. Three days walking now. feeling good and a little tired now. weather has been mixed, a lot of rain and some very heavy. But places and people have been great.

Friday we walked from Burgos to Hontanas and stayed in a wonderful little hostel.

saturday we walked to Boadillo de Camino and stayed in another lovely hostel, met an Irish jesuit, who was also walking Camino, this morning he said mass for us in hostel, today is feast of Corpus Christi, which is still pretty big over here. It was strange, he had the readings on his Ipod!

Tonight we arrive In Carrion, and just missed procession, all the streets were covered in flower petals, very beautiful. If I had the photo skills of Hayseed, i would have some good pics, but ye will have to settle for mine when i come back.

So far we have walked almost 90 km, and we are all still relativley healty, only a few blisters.

Tonight we are staying in a convent, which is lovely, they are augustinians i think, must check that out. They gave us a wonderful blessing this evening.

Gotta sign off now, as bed is at ten and wer out walking at six thirty.

Buen Camino

Evening Guys, Greetings From Leon.

completed six days walking without a break now.

Today was our longest days walking, almost 40 km. The plan was to make it here today so we could have an evening out in city, but we were all so tired that the rest of group are gone to bed!

Weather is still very changeable, still a lot of rain around and walking a good bit in wet gear. Plus it is very cold, tonight i am wearing a tshirt, shirt and fleece and still cold!

We hear there is a heatwave on east coast, near barcelona, but its nowhere near us, we just have floods!

After Carrion, we walked out of town on old roman road, incredible that it is still in such good condition. Then headed to Templardillos, which was an Knights templar headquarters, great hostel. We got a room with just 4 beds and ensuite, pure luxury.

Next day we walked to burgho de ranero, and stayed in dorm with 50 people and one toilet between us.

This part of spain is very flat, a lot of people find it difficult walking as you can see your destination for maybe 5-6 km before you get there and roads are so staight with no hills. Like a massive prairie, fields and fields of wheat. We met a lot of people today who got train!

We have developed some bad habits as pilgrims, we play a lot of cards in evenings, hooked on a game called newmarket!

Today we are splasing out on Hotel in leon, its gorgeous, it has a spa and i got foot massage, i am in heaven

tomorrow we are up early to have a look at cathedral.

Ciao

Buen Camino, and thanks for all your positive thoughts

Fair play to Brian. We.re at the other end of Spain enjoying the last few days of our hols. The Costa del sol certainly lived up to its name. Nerja is a babulous place muy bueno. The only downside is that the sea is cold but I need to cool off after my run along the beach. Thnaks v for the compliments (says lerato who doesn't do any running but waits until i return to get her coffee served in bed). Looking forward to getting home, definitely not. This has to be one of the best holidays yet but my cholestoreol had definitely suffered. too bad.

Greetings From Cacabelos in Spain. Just Finished 10 days walking now, less than 200km to Santiago. Hopefully we will be there by next Saturday, all going well.

We had a look around Leon before we hit the road again. Nice city, very lively at night, unfortunately we were not up for it as we had probably overdone it that day, 40 km with the 10-12 Backpack and two-litres of water is a tough day.

The walk out of Leon was fairly unmemorable, alot of the camino around Leon is right next to motorways and very enjoyable, you just seem to concentrate on making up the miles and getting to next destination.

From Leon we headed to San Martin, It rained for most of the walk, which seems to be trend so far, weather here has been very unseasonable.

From St Martin, the terrain starts to get more varied, less wheat, more market gardening. We stopped at a place called Hospital de Obrigo, which was pretty cool, they were setting up for annual jousting competion!

We got a quick look around Astorga, which is a lovely city, would be tempted to head back there for a weekend.

The Camino starts to climb again and walked onto Santa Catalina in the hills. Wonderful views back over Astorga and beyond. Seen a few pilgrims with Donkeys carrying their gear up in the hills.

Then onto El ACebo, which is over the highest part of the camino, 1500 metres, big mountains around here, puts ours to shame!

Unfortunately weather up to this point is still bad. In Acebo, we had thunderstorms and hostel was full so we slept in a glorified cow shed with toilet! and 10 Italians, bitterly cold up in hills.

Then today we walked down from hills to Cacabelos. Weather today was pretty good, no rain and lots of sunshine, a few of us got a bit of colour!

We stopped in Ponferada for a while to look at Templar castle, pretty impressive. Well worth a look.

Tonight we are in a hotel again, luxury! ensuites are so great!

Its been a great trip so far, company has been great, food has been amazing, and since we left st martin it feels like real walking again, we are off the road. We are averaging about 30 km a day still, next week we will probably up it a little each day as we are coming to the close, Santaigo is in our sights.

Ciao

Buen Camino

They are in their mid sixties and loved it - but wouldn't do it again.

They finished the six week trip in Santiago and as a surprise we booked them into that fancy hotel in the main square. They had been staying in the pensions all the way and the day they arrived (June 1st) was their wedding anni so that was our present to them.. Brian,

Just in case forget - will you please include a mother/son met quite by accident who are desperate for prayers.  This young woman has had a very sad life to date, yet never complains - she is a soldier yeseven soldiers hurt.  She is now in a strange country with very little money and just been told that the biggest part of her life i.e. her son has a bad cancer.  Literally, only her faith is holding her together and she is not too proud to beg for prayers.

Maybe it is a simplistic view but am a believer that miracles can and do happen.  Brian, imagine you have a direct line with the man above at this stage - and anyone else who cares, please keep her in mind

Bravo bravissimo and very well done Brian!!! (that wasn't in the text!)

Evening guys,

Arrived in Santiago this morning in time for the pilgrims mass at noon. Great sense of achievement in getting here. I have been very lucky with my feet, i didnt get any blisters at all, unlike some of my friends who really suffered.

After the mass we got our compestellas, and are feeling quite proud. We are staying in a hotel tonight, and tomorrow we head for the coast, another 90 km walk, so maybe three more days. Then a day off at beach and fly back from porto.

We had a lovely dinner tonight with all five of us to celebrate the end of the pilgrimage. Two of the guys arrived yesterday, they did an amazing 55 km in one day! One of them is 65 years soon! So anybody can do this, you just have to give in to losing a few comforts that we have gotten too used to.

I havent got much time here on PC so I will write a proper post, tomorrow if i can.

Once again, thanks for all the encouragment.

Buen Camino

PS

I saw that hotel your parents stayed in, it looks amazing. and our group with ages of 30-64 is some of the youngest on camino.

In Porto today, got bus down from Santiago earlier today. Last night of trip, seems like i have been away for ages. We flew to spain three weeks ago tomorrow. I am looking forward to getting home and seeing my wife and family.

Porto is a nice city, beautiful weather here today. Hotter than anything we got on camino. Plus we just watched Portugal beat Czech republic on TV here in hotel. Lot of happy people here now!

Ryanair do a direct flight out of here tomorrow which is great, no messing in airports, just straight home. Plus its very cheap to fly, only 28 euro.

We completed the camino to Santiago and then decided to continue walking to finistere, another 90 km or so. Norammly done on three day stages, but we had built up a good walking fitness in previous weeks and did it in 2 days, walked 55 km in one day! a record for me and rest of group i think.

The finisterre stages are beautiful, much more desolate and remote than the rest of camino, possibly my favourite bit of the trip. That and the pyrennes are stunning scenery. Also walking to the sea is great, we could see it from hills and it looked so inviting.

When we got to finistere we walked up to lighthouse, next stop Americas. Then we did the ritual of burning our clothes on the rocks and went swimming in Atlantic (very very cold) and we were reborn again (apparantly).

Then we got a bus back to santiago last night. It was sad to leave santiago today, but life goes on.

Once again thanks for the well wishes and honest i am not a saint yet! I still have a few vices! like this website.

Buen Camino

Home now, feels good but pretty strange as well. First morning in weeks where i didnt have to get up and walk for day. So i slept in till one!

There wont be many opportnities to walk 55 in a day back here, but next saturday we are doing ring of imaal circuit which is 26 miles or almost 42 km, which hopefully we will be ok at. its only run every two years now by an oige. |i have probably walked all of it in different walks before but never all in one day, takes between 8-11 hours. So i will probably hit the hills tomorrow and sunday to try and remember the route.
