I wasn't there. I was probably still being breast fed
at that stage (possibly too much info ... !)
having been born a year before the Grove phenomenon
started ....
However, I'm really curious to know what was played
back then. I've seen a post from PogueO'Mahoney and he gave a great list of slow songs
from that era.
I'm curious as to whether Cecil ever played stuff
from Grateful Dead or Canned Heat in those days?
How about other Hippy era stuff.. eg, Matthew
Southern Comfort?...
.. or stuff from the Who .. was there a mods versus
rockers thing going on ? My suspicion is that the
Grove was a pacifying force in terms of musical
divisions like that along the lines of what Cecil
said on the documentary or radio show .. i.e
that different followers of musical genres would
never have managed to share the same space anywhere
else in Christendom other than the Grove.

Too true...
I had good friends who were Mods..one who used to wear his Parka to the
Grove....and I don't recall him ever getting any hassle. I could be
wrong..but I think that if I had gone to Bubbles in my combat with
AC/DC and Zeppelin patches I'm not so sure it would have been so
easy...At any time there were Metalheads, cureheads, Goths, Punks,
hippies, folkies, Mods, Rudeboys, New Romantics etc at the Grove. It
didn't matter...cos good music..is good music. I'd listen to Depeche
Mode or the Cult or Joy Divison or Motorhead with equal relish.....
that WAS the Grove in my opinion

I started going to the grove in the end of july 1967. Songs I remember are "whiter shade of pale", "San Francisco",the B side of "all you need is love" which was a track called "baby, you`re a richman","kinghts in white satin","for what it`s worth",I could go on for an age. By the way IanL mentioned my favourite all time track Matthews Southern Comfort`s "Woodstock" otherwise I would not have the guts to reply.

Great stuff Pat !
I had a sixth sense that "On the Road Again"
*had* to have been played in the Grove in
the earlier days. "Going up to the country"
is a great track too - real hippy anthem !
I would have had to hire a time machine or
Tardis to bring me to the Grove in the 70s
to confirm my suspicions if it wasn't for this
forum.. or else *acquire* an older brother
(difficult as I was eldest). Thanks for stepping
in older brothers
One to keep the thread rolling, Frank, Pat, etc...
Did Cecil ever play any Donovan... eg "Sunshine Superman"?
... definitely an anthem tune from that era.

Re Donovan.......not sure ..........but it was out in 1966 and am sure it would have been played from 1967 on when the Grove first started.
It's a classic and Bulmers were quick to catch on to it's hippy summer sound for this years add.

Thanks Pat ...
1966... good vintage .. If I say so myself
Speaking of Grove songs which ended up being used
in various advert campaigns...
I'd say a lot of folks would agree that whoever
decided to use "Man of the world" by Fleetwood
Mac for a very graphic and shocking road safety
campaign video in Ireland has probably ruined
a generations enjoyment of that track ....

Yeah, hard to play that song now without thinking of that graphic advertisment.
I wonder who decides what song for what add and do the artists know about it

I remember Cecil used to play Status Quo's "Hello" album before the gig started.
Also Rod Stewart's "Never A Dull Moment" and "Every Picture Tells A Story"
God, I remember getting into the Grove on a wet Sunday night, having driven down on the motorbike and just lovin to hear those albums. You seemed to dry out pretty quick only to get soaked again going home.
And up for work on Monday, on the bike rain or shine.
I was young then

IanL, agree totally with you about "Man of the World"/ad campaign. Used to love that track (s'pose I still love it) but its hard to play it 'post-ad'.
Pat, Cecil still played "Hello" pre-Grove when I was going down - great stuff, I've lots of time for Quo. Admittedly, he didnt play it regularly as other heavier albums took precedence often but it was always great to hear it when he played it.

I think Quo were great live at the 1985 Geldof/Ure
LiveAid benefit gigathon.
Of course Queen really stole the show though, I thought..
Pat - maybe this is a childhood story thread anecdote
but you just reminded me that my father (who had
an optician practice on the Quays) once gave a pair
of specs to a guy and the guy took a "test drive"
with them by walking the Quay. My father was fine
with him trying them as he knew this chaps family, etc
and new he wasn't going to run away with them.
Anyway.. the glasses test driver decided to lean his
head over the Liffey and apparently the specs
took part in an unofficial "Liffey descent".
He came back all red faced to my father ...
I'm sure those specs have barnacles on them by now.

Ian, Queen stole the show that day alright but there was a few honourable mentions, Quo included. Went to see Queen 85 or 86 in Slane (maybe '86??) and I didnt really enjoy it though. Was miles from stage, very drunk (we had been in Slane House from 10.30am), and weather was awful (fell asleep for opening act - the bangles - lads, I know, I know, shows how drunk I was). Do remember waking up and ended up sitting on some big guys shoulders (Noel something?), totally out of it, clapping during "I can hear your heartbeat" by Chris Rea though. If you're out there "Noel", thanks for giving me a bunt up so I could see a bit better that day!!
Pat, is "Mystery Song" on "Hello" - or maybe "Blue for You" I really cant recall. Got 7" of Mystery Song in "Mojos" records at Ha'Penny Bridge the other day for €5 and its been on the turntable almost constantly ever since - great track!

Re: 1967-72
I noticed in recent days that Jefferson Airplane's
"White Rabbit" is being used on a TV commercial
(trying to remember which one ... very atmospheric
track !!)
Someone in an earlier thread mentioned it was on
Cecil's original 67-72 era playlist.
Lyrics are super too !
"One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"

We're all here 7/8 years or more and have had some mghty crack in the early days.
Unfortunately the best days are long gone, yet there is still some life thanks to Pat, Mel, Frank and Sean mainly with the assistance of a few notable others. Must confess to being awful slack meself.

I aint heading anywhere either. I prefer the "personal" nature of the website to the FB stuff. In a way it's kinda a pity because any potential newbies will drift towards the FB pages first and never set foot in here. Myself and Laura tried, at one point, to start new threads and resurrect old ones to tempt newbies into commenting but they didnt get much traffic.
