Tried turning on pc at home this morning, and it wouldn't work. The black screen comes up which says it cant start and offers a number of options. windows normal, safe mode, last configuration.... No matter which option I select it just keeps restarting and goes to this screen.

Any suggestions?

Hmmmmm Finno You may have to reinstall that. Do you have anything on that you need to backup i.e. photos music files etc etc??.. Had a laptop with the same problem in work and thats what I ended up doing with it.

Finno

If you have a back up done of your files there is a couple of things to try....
1. If you have XP Emergency Recovery Disks you could try that.(I think you can create these during an installation.
2. Try Recovery Console/Repair from the XP cd. I have never really used that tool and sometimes its easier and quicker to reisntall from scratch
3. or do a full reinstallation of XP, During the installation it will ask you do you want to format the partition or leave it intact. If you leave it intact you should hold on to your drivers and software. It may give you the option to install it into a new location ie C:WINDOWS.000 if it gives you the option to install it in Particular folder just in stall in C:\WINDOWS

Any problems you can give me a buzz... Just doing up my invoice for you now  Hope you have a big wallet

P

could do is reinstall XP

Best and Easiest way to back up is ,

Photos, Documents, music files, movies, etc etc. is too either
1. Copy them to CD or DVDs, all the above can be copied
2. Get an external drive and copy them on to it. What I do with my music is I have a folder for new music I get and I put the new music in there and also put it on to the backup and then copy it alphbethically
3. Memory sticks are great

There are other ways to back up your whoe pc and programs.

Finno,

Thats really annoying - It happened me a few years ago - lost everything.   I now back up everything every few weeks.   how I lost it we were hit by lightening and while I had the computer through a surge protector I didn't have the phone line - All the phones in the house were fried along with the computer so an expensive lesson.   Hope you got all your files back.

Les,

if you have something like "nero" on your computer it is very straighforward you can save all to DVD, CD or Zip which ever suits you.

Lesley,

Theres also a "back-up" option for your files with the Norton 360 antivirus software package, just in case of a worst case scenario.  Just click the button, and it stores your stuff in a secure location.  Does take a good while though, maybe leave it to work overnight.

There are also versions of linux which can run from CD or a USB stick. These are ideal for starting up a machine and copying files across in situations like this.

Here's an idea I came up with all by myself. It will work for any man who's wife insists on pulling plugs out of computers and walls by the wire. I went through three of these power adapters in one year at almost $100 a pop. I considered using the broken wires to make a whip to beat her with but instead came up with the idea of using a nylon electrical tie to secure the wires. This one has lasted over three months without any signs of wear. The same idea will work on Radio or TV plugs or to hold your hair in place.
