Below are photos of rural Thai life that is not often seen by the foreign eye. The photos include Puy's home, her family and friends, Thai eating habits, rural Thai farming methods and countryside, rural Thai fishing methods and Thai merit making which Thai's perform at special occasions. Puy's home in Khampang Phet in north west Thailand. You see those big vats. Well they collect rain water in them for domestic use. Not like here where we have all the rain we want but apparently can't store it and want to drain our beloved Shannon.  ------------- May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride. Puy's nephews in boy scout uniforms. The dog is a character but was a bit bold that day. When Puy's father played his stuff, that dog came in from wherever and howled his head off and did so after he died. Mealtime in the Khamphumee household. Thai's traditionally sit on the floor and share dishes of food. However I sit on a chair as I get cramp when sitting like they do   ------------- May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride. Biker Pat Grove 1972-1975 |

Burning rubbish. In most rural areas in Thailand there is no waste collection so the only way to get rid of it is to burn it. You can have all the Kyoto's you want but this practice will never change until governments around the world stop being so corrupt and drill the money down into local communities.  ------------- May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride. Merit making. The monks come to the house to cleanse it of any evil spirits and invite the good ones in. The spirit world is very prevelant in rural Thailand. I myself have witnessed a ghost and when Puy's father died he was heard playing his music around the house.  ------------- May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride. It is Robbie and reminds me of Ireland in the 60's re rural parts. The people in those photos are not poor, they are so strong in spirit and work their land. Puy's father, no more than our own. worked his ass off to get this pad and all that land you see. They remind me of Ireland when we were a lot less well off but we had better neighbour relations. Pat I was in Cambodia last year...amazing place..horrific and stunning at the same time. Are you going to Siem Reap? Angkor Wat is absolutely amazing. We got a boat from there to Phnon Penh, 6 hours on the roof!! I found it all disturbing I have to say but in a way that changes your life and motivated me to do things. Phnom Penh is .....weird. Went to the Killing fields of course...speechless. If you haven't read the history of the place, do before you go. The people are beautiful (as are all Asians in my opinion). We met a girl in a restaurant there, just touched our hearts and we are now sponsoring her degree in Accounting so I will go back for her graduation. As for why I am here?? Its beside Asia *LOL*...but I wouldn't be able to LIVE in Asia and assimilate to their customs. I'm only good as an observer. |

Thailand is one of my favourite countries, mainly because of the people, but not knowing any natives never had the privilege of a real off the beaten track experience. Thanks to Pat, Puy and family for sharing. So Pat do they think you're a real softie for sitting on chairs and having a bed? My one bit of advice for Cambodia is learn how to say "No Thank You" in Khmer. Another beautiful country but as Carol said very thought provoking and sad in many ways. Especially seeing so many victims of landmines. Looking forward to more photos. Keep them coming! ------------- Smoke me a kipper I'll be back for Breakfast! |

No, they don't think I'm a softie. They understand foreigners don't have supple bodies like the Thais. No thank you in Thai is 'mew kap'...mew as in a cats purr and 'my me dang' means I have no money. There will be more from the Far East after my next trip later in the year. I hope to take in Cambodia and the Phillipines as well as Thailand. There are a lot of other pictures I didn't put up as I have nearly 200 Just thought what I put up was enough and tanks all for your lovely comments which Puy and I appreciate very much.
