I was just wondering if this thread would work or is it too personal.
Wanted to see what members surnames are and where you and your parents originated.
Me might find we're all related
Just simple information.
My surname and place of birth : McMorrow, Celtic Park, Dublin 9.
Father : McMorrow, Mohill, Co Leitrim.
Mother : Keaveny, Tynagh, Co Galway.

The surname Early.
That was the name of the people that bought my father's house down in Mohill when it and the farm was sold back in the early 60's.

Also Pat..
Hubbies mothers maiden name i.e his maternal surname is KEAVENEY also.
They hail from somewhere near Kells, Co Meath.
My Dads maternal surname was Ffrench...
My Mothers´maternal surname was Gaffney.
The Ffrench´s hailed from Sligeach at one stage and emigrated to Scotland 19th/20th century..maybe that is where the GRAHAM comes in or came in who knows ??.

Maybe the term 'Culchies' will have to be reviewed.
Perhaps 'non-Dubs' might be better to cater for cases like Aries and BF.
So unless your parents are both Dublin born you go into the non-Dubs category.

Yep my Granny called Annie - her eldest, my Aunt was christened Anne but of course never called that - she was always called Nancy.
That was very common in those days...
John or John Joseph was probably Jack and there are loads of others.
Question:
Wonder out of us allhere - Who had rebel grandads fighting in the GPO and Who had grandads that were fighting on the front, WWI ????.
My grandad - fantastic name - are yiz ready...
Sylvester Aloysius Stanisclaus Graham
Needless to say he was only ever know as " Syl"..
He had to go cos there was no work..full stop..
He was a Medic.
So thats that.

Wow Mins thats a brilliant name
My Grandad was also a rebel ( sure I think they all were back then ). When he died he got the full old volunteer funeral, with the gun salute and the tri-colour draped over his coffin. His brother Joseph was mistaken as a informer down in Limerick and taken out of his bed in the middle of the night by the black and tans and shot dead in front of his family. They realised the next day that it was the wrong man they shot. As a result there is an "O'Donoghue avenue" down in Limerick called after him.........thats my only claim to fame.

Blondie, I'll have to ask Dad when he gets back (he's away this week) what number the house was. They lived on Oxmantown Road until Dad was somewhere in his teens, then they moved to 10 Murtagh Road where my Grandparents lived until they passed on. I'll find out and let you know.
Both parents born in Dublin. That makes me a full-blooded Dub!
My great-grandad was in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. Lance Corporal Charles Heatley, aged 26. He was killed going over the top on the first day of the Somme and his name is on the Thiepval memorial although his body was never found. His wife died four months later of the black flu, leaving my grandad and his two brothers without parents. She was only 24. Very sad piece of family history.

Surname is O Donnchu (although the birth cert has O Donoghue) born Rotunda ( ) and bred in Dollymount Rise
Da is a Kerryman from Glenflesk - so was his da and all the way back. My nana travelled oooh, about 500 yards from another part of Glenflesk to marry him. Laura is doing the family trees at the minute, and I don't think I have a single ancestor on that side who is further than about three miles radius of the family farm. The sheer number of Maurices and Cons (my uncle and my da) in the O Donoghue clan is amazing. Even their cousin Aonghus is really Maurice. They never knew that until a couple of weeks ago, even though it's the neighbouring (originally the same) farm
Ma is from the Naas Road - Farrell. Not from Bluebell or Inchicore. The Naas Road - number 80 to be exact. My granddad was born in Inchicore and worked in Guinness. My granny was born in or around the Coombe - think it was Basin Lane area. Very unclear on her side, although family legend has 8 generations in the Liberties.
As for realtives who fought - my granddad is Kerry was part of the old IRA. His brother was a gunman as well. I recently found out that a friend of a friend was his grandson so we're related. He's a bit of a prat this fella so I was a bit unimpressed.
My granddad in Dublin joined the Irish army during the Emergency (not WWII )
His brother (we think, Kevin's exact whereabouts for many a year were a touch vague) was in the British Army at some stage
Laura's side had a few RIC men
So, we're kinda on all sides.
I have Kerry blood and Dublin blood (and there's some Limerick from Inchicore granddad) but I know what I am.....

Both of my grandads and one of my uncles were in WW2. One of my grandads was a prisoner in a German prison camp and my granny was told he was missing presumed dead. She believed he was dead for a couple of years.
He came home at the end of the war weighing 6st, snow white hair, no teeth (he complained of a tooth ache and every tooth was ripped out without anaesthetic.)

There is another site called Genes Reunited that I have been working on for the last few years. I came across a guy from the Isle Of Sky on the site who looks to be my fourth cousin. We have been sharing information about the Cranston family for the last few years. We have some of our Cranston line now back to the the early 1700's. It's very interesting stuff but you can get hooked. You might get nothing for months and then one snipit of info can send you all directions.

Thank you, A lot of work went into it. And I have to admit my older Brother n sisters contributed the stories. I did all the research. I didn't know The MA n DADS history as my Dad died when I was only 5 so I didn't have too many stories of him. Also they were able to tell me where and how they grandparents lived etc.

It's what the thread was meant to do. See if people connect.
But I want more people to give their details so we can get a bigger picture and maybe more connections.
Also it keeps Rolo busy when he's idling at his desk

Only coming back to this thread after a couple of weeks. Brendan, small world isn't it? I'm not sure what battalion my great-grandad was in, I'll have to check with Dad but it was quite possible that it was the 2nd. Did your Grandad see any action in Gallipoli before the Somme?

Dayo - I checked out the Genes Reunited site you mentioned, and you're right - I'm hooked.
Best thing yis should all do is get a pencil & paper & do up what you know about your tree. Over the Christmas, ask all those uncles, aunts & cousins to fill in any bits they know of. ( http://www.ancestry.com/charts/ancchart.aspx - Print some of these ) amazing how it grows. CP

My parents have done a lot of that work for me already. Mam started off tracing her family tree but hit a blank wall after three generations. That fire in the custom house wiped out a lot of valuable information.
My Dad's been bitten by the bug since and spends all his time traipsing round cemeteries and records offices. It's a fascinating subject, especially as he's gone about six generations back now which is into the 1800's. I even bought him a genealogy t-shirt for christmas. It says "Breaking down the wall, one brick at a time." Hope he likes it!
My husband's grandmother was a mine of information up till her death three years ago. She was 96 and had a very clear memory. Know that (now headless) statue of Sean Russell in Fairview park? That was her godfather. We found a diary belonging to her after her death and in it, she wrote about how she was walking up towards Croke Park on Bloody Sunday with her brother in the pram and heard screaming and gunfire. She met Sean Russell coming in the opposite direction who told her to go home, lock the door and pull the curtains. What a piece of history, eh?

Over 35,500 Irish soldiers died in the Great War. Memories of the war and the victims it claimed were still fresh in Irish households. The Ireland to which the veterans returned was a very different place from the home they had left. Many were victimized either physically - the IRA murdered at least two hundred between 1919 - '22,

The lure of a steady wage and a separation allowance for married men also enticed many to enlist. Over 200,000 Irish people served in the allied forces in the Great War, about 30,000 from Dublin alone. As with their English counterparts, Irishmen enlisted for many different reasons. Some joined up for the wage, many others felt a sense of duty or moral obligation and some naively thought it would be an exciting adventure. A significant section of the Irish Volunteers bitterly disagreed with Irish nationalists serving in the British Army and it was from their ranks that the Irish Republican Brotherhood organised an armed rebellion in 1916. Those Irishmen serving in the Great War would see the 1916 Rising as a betrayal. They were dealt a double blow: not only did many high ranking British officers treat the Irish with suspicion and distrust after the insurrection, but many Irish civilians cast aspersions on them for serving in the army of the 'oppressor'.

Very interesting reading the various occupations too. Apparently we had a 'letter carrier' in the family!

Kilbride is a Tipperary name-apparently gentry type (so my dad used to tell me)
My Dad is from Marino-Marino Green and my mum from Donnycarney.
Tony's dad is from Brian Road in Marino, they both moved to Brookwood in Artane in the 50's/60's were we were born and started our lifelong friendship (and funnily enough both Tony and I moved to Clonbtarf befrore we were married)
Dads dad had a shop near the church in East Wall-it's not a great scan but you can just make out 'JJ Kilbrides' on the right.

Martin....that is a great pic to have, it's great to have old pics of familys. I have just returned from a weekend down in Galway where I got to visit my great Grandparents house and farm where they lived from 1850's until 1940. I also got to visit their graves which was not too far from where they lived......it was a real " who do you think you are" day for me and I loved it.
